Wait!
We still have to bump somebody off the 40 man to make room for Dobbs. Maybe the final transaction line will read

Outright Oliveros
Option Choo
DFA C-Rex
Recall Snelling
Purchase Dobbs
Purchase Jones

by Corco on Jul 13, 2006 12:13 PM PDT reply actions

Outrighting Oliveros
Removes him from the 40-man roster.... Dobbs will take his spot.

by MfaninAlaska on Jul 13, 2006 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

OK
then whose spot does Jones take?

by Corco on Jul 13, 2006 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Whose spot
does Jones take?  He's not on the 40-man either.
Free George Sherrill. And Dan Rohn.

However
Jones is not on the 40 man.  Someone else has to go.

this is impressive
in 37 seconds we got three of the exact same question.

by Corco on Jul 13, 2006 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Neither is Reed.
Choo was already on the 40 man. Ergo, Jones gets his spot.

by eponymous coward on Jul 13, 2006 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

yes
but the 40 man is still full. Before today's moves We have

22 pitchers
3 Catchers
8 IFs
7 OFS
=40

+Reed=41

by Corco on Jul 13, 2006 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Read it yourself...
40 man roster

Count. With Reed, it equals 40. Subtract Reed for being on the 60 day DL. Add Jones. You still get 40.

by eponymous coward on Jul 13, 2006 12:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Jones + Dobbs = 2
Neither are on that 40-man list.
Free George Sherrill. And Dan Rohn.

by PositivePaul on Jul 13, 2006 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions

And Oliveros is already off...
...so there's still 1 more spot needing to be freed.
Free George Sherrill. And Dan Rohn.

by PositivePaul on Jul 13, 2006 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Didn't Lowe
Take Reed's spot on the 40-man??? Chick took Guardado's spot....

by MfaninAlaska on Jul 13, 2006 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions

yes
and then Oliveros took Petagine's spot

by Corco on Jul 13, 2006 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Nope.
Not unless Choo was outrighted.  Choo's still on the 40-man; he's just no longer on the 25-man.

Oh, and Choo was optioned, not outrighted.  He stays on the 40-man.

Free George Sherrill. And Dan Rohn.

by PositivePaul on Jul 13, 2006 12:43 PM PDT up reply actions

All together
if Dobbs was recalled, then he was on the 40 man.  They did not have to purchase his contact.  If they used the wrong verbage, then so be it.

by elsid on Jul 13, 2006 6:06 PM PDT up reply actions

With all due respect, of course...
After all those moves yesterday, the M's had 41 men listed on their 40-man (42, if you count Reed, which doesn't, of course, count -- since he's on the 60-day DL).

Dobbs was not on the 40-man before the transaction yesterday, and he needed to be added.  He's on there now, of course, but he wasn't listed before yesterday's transaction.

Bottom line, they need to remove someone from the 40-man before today's game.  If I had to wager, I'd bet that they're going to 60-day DL Morse.

Free George Sherrill. And Dan Rohn.

by PositivePaul on Jul 14, 2006 9:07 AM PDT up reply actions

I, too, scratcheth mine noggin...
I suspect, though, it'll be:

Morse --> 60 day DL.

There's indeed one more move that needs to happen.

Free George Sherrill. And Dan Rohn.

by PositivePaul on Jul 13, 2006 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Morse to 60 day?
you think? Because if they 60-day him they have to pay him big league salary.

by Corco on Jul 13, 2006 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Good point.
Not sure, really.

LOVE to see Mateo or C-Rex DFA'd.

Free George Sherrill. And Dan Rohn.

by PositivePaul on Jul 13, 2006 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow, 330K
That's what, a day's beer sales at Safeco?

Big deal.

That being said, they had an open spot because Reed went off to 40 man when HE went to the 60 day DL.

by eponymous coward on Jul 13, 2006 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's a problem
Maybe take Foppert off the 40 man or something.  I'm not sure... unless indeed the time is now to DFA Carl.

WHAT
Somebody needs to club the Dobber upside the head or put him in a box and send him to Kansas City so this can never happen again.

Just... WHAT?!  WHAT?!?!?!  I'd call up Little Garciaparra before I call up Dobbs.  Does Grover REALLY need someone to take Petagine's Stale PH Bench Bat spot?

So we turned a bench with Lawton, WFB and Petagine
... into a bench with WFB, Dobbs and Perez. And it only cost us A-Cab.

Brilliant. Just brilliant.

Dobbs is a good bench bat.
No use calling Snelling up to sit on the bench.

Dobbs fills Morse's role.

I agree
With the sentiment of the post but have a major quibble with the use of 'good' in the title.

by Graham MacAree on Jul 13, 2006 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions

a "good bench bat"
does not mean the person posesses a good bat. If so, person would have regular duty.

by Matthew on Jul 13, 2006 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Bah.
Bench on July 2:

UBERIFFIC POTENTIAL!

Perez, the lefty mashing, righty bat of death! Petagine, the righty smashing, lefty NPB MVP! Bloomquist, jack of all trades/master of none! Rivera, the guy who brings Hargrove prune juice!

Bench on July 14:

Plank = Better

Perez, the lefty masher! Dobbs, tries to hit righties really badly! Bloomquist, jack of all trades/master of none! Rivera, the guy who brings Hargrove prune juice AND Metamucil!

by IcebreakerX on Jul 13, 2006 1:12 PM PDT reply actions

So subbing Petagine for Dobbs turned
an "UBERRIFFIC" bench in the world into one completely worthless?

We're talking about a very small # of ABs, plus Dobbs does get points over Petagine for actually being able to play the field.

by Matthew on Jul 13, 2006 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

The Bench...
Was ruined by Mike Hargrove, Master of the Template Lineup Card!

Everett swinging a slow bat and having an OPS lower than Ichiro!? No worries, keep playing him!

Sexson grinding like a rusty engine and playing generally like crap!? No worries, keep playing him! A little rest would never work!

Ibanez's legs a little tired?! No worries, keep playing him in LF instead of DHing him occasionally!

PH situation in the 7th or 8th inning, where a good hit off Joel Zumaya or Generic LOOGY can be the blunt end to the opposition?! NO WAY! Let Betancourt or Bloomquist or Everett flail away!

Petagine plays a good 1B and a passable LF. There is no excuse for such incompetent bench use. Like Tim Purpura said, it's not about being a veteran and having a 'right' to a slot, it's all about production.

by IcebreakerX on Jul 13, 2006 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Very true
You just summed up a large part of the problem, if not the entire problem, in one post.
SWUNG ON AND BELTED! DEEP TO... shortstop....

Dobbs for Petagine
is what this boils down to on the bench. I gave up on Petagine some time ago, thanks to that jackass manager of ours, so meh.

Don't bring up Snelling to sit on the bench, wait til you are gonna DFA/move Everett. btw, that time is now but that is another story...

by bilbo on Jul 13, 2006 1:14 PM PDT reply actions

Well, it's upsetting...
But I guess they're really waiting to get rid of Everett before calling up Snelling...that's all I can think of.  Bavasi probably knows Snelling would just sit on the bench if he was called up with Everett still on the team...so he's probably going to be seeing how he can move Carl in the next two weeks, and if he can't, it'll probably be a July 31st DFA and call up.

I hope.

Dobbs, what the fuck!?

We'll Always Have the Kingdome: Because I'll actually update it now, and I promise it's not that bad.

M's Website
Shows 42 people on the 40-man roster (including Reed on the 60-day DL). Someone is going to have to go. Maybe they are just waiting to make it public until the person is told. They could also be deciding whether to put someone else on the 60-day DL (Morse, Foppert?) or they could be close to a trade.

by kva15 on Jul 13, 2006 2:42 PM PDT reply actions

I FUCKING TOLD YOU GUYS
Hargrove has a man crush on Dobbs and wants him as his bench bat.
