(What is this?)

I think we all expected to get shut down offensively tonight, and as such the loss shouldn't come as any surprise, so at least Felix looked good for most of his seven innings. Granted, the Twins have a lousy lineup and he got burned by his fastball again (see: Mauer home run, other hits), but Batista's RBI single was just a good piece of hitting on a sharp breaking ball, and outside of a few brief stretches Felix looked in total command. Certainly an encouraging outing. Something Devin noticed: on more than a few occasions Felix shook off Johjima before going to his fastball (usually on two-strike counts). Could be nothing, but it's worth pointing out.

Jamie Moyer and Boof Bonser tomorrow at 4:10pm. I'll say this - the Twins may play a boring brand of baseball, but between Liriano, Bonser, and Santana, at least they've got some fun pitching to watch in this series. You, on the other hand, shouldn't get to see any of tomorrow's game at all, as LL Night @Cheney is probably going to be way better, with a considerably lesser chance of feeling like a kick in the balls. So there's that to think about.

Liriano wins round 1
But Felix will win the war!

Have to win tommorow, because Oakland won't keep doing their KC impression forever.

Speaking of which, the Yankees got beat by the Royals.HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

LOSING STREAK OVER
And Steinbrenner's probably screaming for trades right now.  Silly knee-jerk billionaire owner.

Question that's been bugging me for a while
Does anyone else think Felix is tipping his fastballs? It just seems so strange to me that despite the fact that it been consistently 96-97, it very rarely is swung on and missed. Even with the bad location, everybody seems to be right on his fastball.

Well it's not hard to hit a fastball
especially when you leave them up in the zone.Highschoolers can hit that.

Yeah I know
but still, at that speed, he should get the occasional whiff, unless they know it's coming.

by Rollo Tomasi on May 27, 2006 1:31 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh
he was getting plenty of whiffs with it today, believe that.  He just left one floating up at the plate that got tagged for a HR.

by ThundaPC on May 27, 2006 1:42 AM PDT up reply actions

He is actually getting quite a few misses
something like 25% of the strikes he gets with the fastball are swings and misses. The problem is that something like 60% of the fastballs he throws are balls.

Liriano is good.

King Felix is returning.

This team sucks at low-scoring ballgames.

M's did exactly what they should've done, get Liriano's pitch count to his limit.  Torii Hunter's charging catch completely deflated a potential rally and a chance to do some damange.

We kinda sorta have to win the next game.  I'm not liking the Pineiro vs. Santana matchup at all.  Getting swept here completely undoes the sweeping of the Padres and thus renders the "57 minute meeting" rather moot.

You're definitely right
I'd much rather face Bonser than Liriano or Santana. He's a nice pitcher, but isn't near them. I see a sweep if we lose today.
I know! We can teach someone to hit against lefties by benching them every time we face them! -Mike Hargrove

Figures
The day I finally sit Felix on my fantasy team and he turns in a decent performance.
Fortunately I have Liriano, too, so all was not lost.

question
Why did Shrerill pitch the top of the 8th with 3 righties coming up?  He wasn't very effective until the 4th batter (Mauer) and then was pulled for Soriano.

Am I dumb or should that have been the other way around: bring in Soriano at the beginning of the inning, if Mauer gets to the plate, then bring in Sherrill?

one of them was a switch hitter
but, yeah, maybe Grover is widening his role above LOOGY? Though it doesn't seem very warranted right now.
