New Rumor Of The Night
The Braves -- who are shopping for relief help -- would then also receive relief pitcher Armando Benitez from the Giants.
Meanwhile, the Royals have offered Miguel Batista $24m over three years. Just for, you know, perspective, and all that.

Damn you winter meetings!
Yeah, not to mention the fact

Are you stating this because . .
Or is this something that the Blog insiders have some info on?
Re: Are you stating this because . .
This one, though, I've heard from a few places, and it's evolved over the past 48 hours or so, suggesting that the front offices are trying to figure out which permutation would work out best for all of them.
Strictly in terms of probability, odds are good this deal never goes down, but for a rumored three-way trade involving a couple big names it's got a reasonable shot. Mariner fans should be crossing their fingers (and toes, and various other appendages if at all possible [please don't brag if it is]).

Funny thing is
This is hot stove at its best.
Yeah, they want out from that thing.

As much legs as this might have . . .
I think so.

3.Hudson

6.Ramirez
7.Cormier?
Oh my god...
Eh?

I don't see how this makes sense
Well I wouldn't call Hudson a TOR any more
the thing is
I think this could happen.
And when it does, I'l lbe joining Dave Cameron in doing backflips in the streets.
salary is why it does make sense

Atlanta wants out pretty bad.
by Jeff Sullivan on Dec 5, 2006 8:56 PM PST up reply actions
I wouldn't mind
The Giants give up the beloved Benitez
In other news. The Mariners have been eliminated
I'm heartbroken.
LOL
Speaking of Joel...whats he up to these days??
I wonder if there was any legs to the rumors
Also wonder if Bavasi
do you really think so?
I just can't see it happeing. The M's have to many guys that could do just as good, if not better than Pinata (havent used that one in a while)
Do I think so? No.
JoePa in the pen posted a 4:1 SO/non-I BB rate and knocked his hit rate down some 40%. But I agree, depending on what moves they make (send Jake Woods to ATL too!), the bullpen is still composed of 7 from:
Putz
Huber
Sherrill
Mateo
O'Flaherty
Fruto
Green
Jimenez
Woods
Lehr
Baek
Lowe*
Plus
Actually I haven't seen a list of who they did, except for Meche. Honestly, didn't hear officially if they offered Putz, even though I have heard that they haven't.
Safeway said
Not to crap on everyone
I still say do it in a heartbeat
To further the giddiness
If we do this
I guess i can see that they NEED alot of bullpen help but i dont see their gain.
I would still love this trade because we dont lose anything(much) by exchanging laroche for sexon and in my opinion we need sp more than relief. Besides we have enough young relief to last for a long time.

If anything, LaRoche is an upgrade over Sexson

Manny
by ZeZetheX on Dec 5, 2006 9:16 PM PST reply actions
BTW,
I'd send a couple decent prospects along with Sexson + Soriano to get this deal done. No Jones, Clement caliber, but Balentien, Garciaparra, Chen, etc.
Hudson's contract is perfectly fine in this market (it's the same as Vicente Padilla's for reference), love the idea of trying to restructure the money though, making it more even across the years. Make it like 12, 10, 10 and you're golden.
LaRoche, not sure if he's arb-eligible this offseason or not. He's right on the cusp of 3 years of service time.
Here's a thought
Seems to good to be true
The M's get a sweet deal. No need to rehash the details.
The Giants would be getting a power hitting first baseman for an overpaid closer who has been injured.
The Braves give up a lot for two relievers.
Really, the M's are the only team who is giving up and recieving anything remotely close to equal value. The Giants give up a guy who has nearly no value, and get something of value. I would be asking the Giants to kick in a prospect or two, and send them to Atlanta.
Ya
by ZeZetheX on Dec 5, 2006 9:42 PM PST up reply actions
Ya but relief pitching has bit Atlanta
by Scruffy Lefty on Dec 5, 2006 9:42 PM PST up reply actions
Well
But yeah, Schuerholz doesn't come out real shiny in this permutation. If I'm Bavasi, I'm throwing guys like Balentien and Justin Thomas out there all willy-nilly in an effort to push him over the hump and get him to accept the deal, because whatever happens the M's are pretty much guaranteed of making out like bandits.
by Jeff Sullivan on Dec 5, 2006 9:43 PM PST up reply actions
I think they want to ditch LaRoche
Salty's value
by Graham MacAree on Dec 5, 2006 11:19 PM PST up reply actions
Other Niceties
The M's would be getting Hudson and LaRoche while actually cutting payroll. Sexson and Soriano would have cost about $17 million. Hudson and LaRoche will cost $7.5 million (with a bump to at least $16 next year). That cuts $10 million off the budget.
The M's would have enough money to add a few players. If need be, they could still sign Schmidt. They could also add a reliever to replace Soriano. They would have a ton of financial space to work with.
Second, this move would not cost the M's draft pick compensation. They would be adding a very good starter and a cheap lefthanded bat (with upside) with no penalty.
Again, seems to good to be true.
That would be a good rotation
Schmidt would be difficult
But we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves. This whole thing is just a rumor with a little more substance than usual.
by Jeff Sullivan on Dec 5, 2006 9:45 PM PST up reply actions
The Ms still have 10-15M in payroll room though
Felix, Schmidt, Hudson, Washburn, Thompson
And if they wanted to clear some more space and take a bit of a risk, they could deal Broussard to save another 4M, try to pick up a cheap one-sided hitter and go with Snelling at DH.
I really don't see the money for schmidt
by tkjinak on Dec 5, 2006 9:46 PM PST reply actions
Heh.
McCovey Chronicles reader - The Mariners aren't that stupid - are they?
I hope we're that stupid.
Bavasi:Well guys, looks like we have a deal.reaches hand out to Schuerholz
Sabean:giggling I can't believe he's going to do this.

Yes,
Yes, that's EXACTLY what we need in a park that's built for Lefties.
Hudson would be a secondary or tertiary move in a good off-season.
Favor the Bold
That's nothing new.
I don't think it's as big a problem as Detecto is making it out to be.
That 850 OPSA...
There is very little difference between Schmidt + Sexson and Hudson + La Roche.

Hmm
Adam LaRoche = Lefty Sock
Deal with Angels for LaRoche
If true, that bodes well for this rumor as it seems like Atlanta is willing to part with him for a top line RP.
Yeah
by Jeff Sullivan on Dec 6, 2006 8:55 AM PST up reply actions
Go get Huddy
Make the trade. Then sign Zito. Hell for good measure go get Mulder too. Since we couldnt beat Oakland last year, lets go get their best three pitchers from the last 5 years to go after the AL West! The big three reunites!
Rotation of Zito, Felix, Hudson, Mulder and Washburn (of course in about July)..so fill in Woods until then wouldnt be bad and VERY lefthanded.
signing Zito
Barry Zito sucks
Yeah
But, really, I'm interested in how moving from Oakland will improve his walk rate.
Walk rates
by Graham MacAree on Dec 6, 2006 10:48 AM PST up reply actions
they do
A) it's minimal
and
B) it's the HR happy ballparks that tend to induce more walks. Oakland is not one of the places.
Heres what I like about Zito
17-5, 3.76 v. TEX (11-1, 3.75 @ TEX)
12-2, 3.62 v. SEA (3-2, 4.06 @ Safeco)
51-30, 3.66 @ OAKLAND
Yah, we could be scared off by his 1.5 K/BB, but honestly we could sign one of the best pitchers in our league away from our rival. If we dont get him, lets just hope he doesnt end up in Arlington.
Hudson's splits
13-6, 3.49 v. ANA (9-3, 2.90 @ Ana)
12-6, 3.32 v. SEA (7-2, 3.08 @ Safeco)
6-5, 4.01 v. TEX ( 2-4, 6.13 @ Tex)
46-15, 3.04 @ OAKLAND
1 ROY, 3 CY YOUNG, 1 MVP
I think a switch back to AL would help
Heh...
Yeah
Manny Ramirez could be traded to the Dodgers or Mariners on Wednesday, according to an ESPN Deportes reports.
The report states that the Dodgers are willing to part with Brad Penny and two prospects, while the Mariners have offered both Richie Sexson and Adrian Beltre. There's little chance of the Red Sox taking back both players from the Mariners, but they could conceivably take one along with J.J. Putz.

Please don't let this be the prelude to a whole season of Willie Boom-Boom at third base...

Oh yeah, or (C)
by Jeff Sullivan on Dec 6, 2006 9:43 AM PST up reply actions
I'd be inclined to think (B) here
So, to borrow from other rumours, this could ultimately end in some subset of LaRoche/Hudson/Lowry going to Boston.
Of course, an option (C) could be to trade Lowell, move Youkilis back to third and the put Sexson (or his trade replacement) in at first.
Oh man: even if you don't like Boston it's hard not to get excited by this sort of intrigue...

Please.
Right now
With Matsuzaka (who'll sign), it's probably ~$110m for eight players or so.
Without Manny and with Beltre/Sexson, it would be like $118m for nine.
But that deal won't happen. It doesn't make sense.

By the way

Manny is great and all, but Hudson-LaRoche (and keeping Jones, Putz, et al) makes our team far better.
