The Mariners selected Nick Kiel with the 531st pick of the draft. Kiel is a LHP from Bellevue College, where he and I were teammates last season. He signed with Missouri in the Fall, but I fully expect him to sign with the Mariners. Kiel is undersized; despite being listed as 5'11'', I think 5'10" might be generous. It is likely that he has maxed out weight-wise. He has a strong base and generates lots of torque with his lower half. His arm action is very quick and comes from a high arm slot. The delivery seems to be repeatable and he shows generally good command and control of four pitches. His fastball sits in the 87-90 range, topping out at 92, and he can work it to both sides of the plate. The curveball is his best secondary offering, with sharp 12-6 break. He also features a slider/cutter and a change-up. I saw him once this year, and he got hammered due to a lack of strikes and quality strikes, although that was likely a fluke. Overall, he is a polished product with sound mechanics and control over four pitches. However, I don't really know if there is any chance for further development. His sleight stature is the obvious reason, as he doesn't have great plane on his fastball, despite the over-the-top delivery. I will be interested to see what the M's do with him. As Kiel is a Jackson High grad, I hope he begins his career in Everett.
He is also a 1 handicap in golf and is right handed in everything but pitching.
