The Mariners are still locked in a tug-of-war for .500 as they round out their second series in an 11-game homestand. While the Angels haven't been unbeatable this week, dropping two of three games, the M's are sending out one of their more unreliable starters to cap the series win.
With James Paxton sidelined for tricep tightness, Brandon Maurer is facing his seventh start of the year with a three-loss streak under his belt. Only once has he pitched more than five innings, and that rare outing met with disastrous results. Over 7 1/3 innings, Maurer gave up 14 hits, six runs, and zero strikeouts to the visiting Kansas City Royals.
Like Maurer, this is Matt Shoemaker's second season in the major leagues. So far, the 27-year-old right-hander has found success in Anaheim, toting a 3.18 ERA and 3.36 FIP through 22 2/3 innings pitched. Over his last two starts, he struck out 12 in 11 innings with four walks and three earned runs. Although Shoemaker was demoted on Sunday in order to bring up left-handed reliever Wade LeBlanc, he was reinstated when Sean Burnett tore a ligament in his elbow several days later.
Fun fact: if you were to look at Matt Shoemaker's Wikipedia page, you'd find an entire section devoted to his beard. This is not a good look for anyone.
