Today the Mariners step into a time machine and travel back to 1977 for their annual throwback night event.
The good thing about throwback nights is that the teams participating don't actually go back in time, and it turns out the whole thing is just a marketing ploy made to drum up ticket and merchandise sales. Whew! Because seriously, if they actually went back in time to 1977, they wouldn't have themselves one of the best second baseman of the era in their starting nine, and their starting shortstop would be zero years old. Yes, that's right. Starting shortstop Willie Bloomquist was born in 1977. Looks like throwback spirit has infiltrated the lineup, too.
The Astros recalled Brett Oberholtzer from AAA to make the start against the Mariners tonight. Before being sent down, Oberholtzer was struggling quite mightly in the Astros' starting roation, owning six losses in seven starts. The good news for the 'stros is that it looks like he was never necessarily broken in his early struggles--a K/9 of 7.34 isn't exactly pedestrian for a 24-year old starter pitching in only his second season in the bigs on the worst team in the league, despite an inflated HR rate leading to a pretty high xFIP. Last year, Oberholtzer showed flashes of being a legitimate number three starter, and even pitched a complete game shutout against the Mariners on September 1st. Tonight will be a big test for him, and what better team to get some confidence back than the one that can never seem to defeat the Astros?
The good news is, though, that we are back in 1977, so this 21st Century Astros curse can just go right to hell. Except the Mariners were terrible in 1977 and the Astros were a .500 team. And um...dammit just win today, alright?
