The Mariners have a shot at taking a 2-1 lead in the series tonight, but before they do, I want to draw attention to the bizarre way in which the M's lost yesterday.
Brandon Maurer pitched 7 1/3 innings with 14 hits, zero walks, zero extra-base hits, and zero strikeouts. It was a frustrating, if slightly unusual loss, and one that had not been matched in 96 years. In 1918, Brooklyn Dodgers' right-hander Dick Robertson went eight full innings against the St. Louis Cardinals, losing 3-1 while allowing 14 hits to 32 batters and matching Maurer's totals of zero walks, zero extra-base hits, and zero strikeouts. Before Maurer's performance, the closest anyone's come to such a long outing with such a high volume of singles was a 3-2 loss in 1981, when Pittsburgh's Eddie Solomon finished off six innings with 10 singles, zero walks, zero extra bases, and zero strikeouts against the Dodgers.
As fun as historic records are, it would be nicer if the Mariners could find one on the winning side.
