2016 Hall of Fame will help in clearing up this discussed mess

Tim Kurkjian wrote a pretty good article about next year's Hall of Fame vote and the cluster that it will be, possibly as bad or worse than this year's.

Here is the article, which you should read, but I will paraphrase below

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10250028/looking-ahead-2015-hall-fame-ballot

Tim thinks that next year, there will be 20 players that are deserving of a vote, but as we know there are 10 spots. Those players are

  • Barry Bonds
  • Roger Clemens
  • Randy Johnson
  • Pedro Martinez
  • Mike Piazza
  • Gary Sheffield
  • Jeff Bagwell
  • Tim Raines
  • Craig Biggio
  • Mike Mussina
  • Curt Schilling
  • John Smoltz
  • Jeff Kent
  • Mark McGwire
  • Sammy Sosa
  • Edgar Martinez
  • AlanTrammel
  • Larry Walker
  • Lee Smith
  • Fred McGriff

Thats a pretty good list, with each player in my opinion, with each having a HOFs (Bill James Hall Measurement) of at least 40 (50 is an average player in the Hall)

With that, we can possibly (not a very good one) "predict" who will get in and who will be out and so forth. The Hall of Fame voting is odd, as usually 1-3 players are voted in every year, with a maximum of 10. Next year, I think that there will be 4 players selected, which is fairly rare.

My picks are

  • Randy Johnson - This is obvious, he will get 90+%
  • Pedro - This should be obvious, but some voters won't vote for him because of his brazen attitude and the awful last 5 years of his career
  • Biggio - The guy needs 2 votes and there will be a large amount of pushing to get him in, and I think the writers will make it happen
  • Piazza - This is a bit of a stretch, but the guy got 62% this year, and I believe he will be compared to Sheffield alot, who played bad defense (Piazza did as well) and never had the "big name" notoriety that Piazza had.

So with that, 6 spots go unfilled, and some people run out of years to be voted in (Don Mattingly). and possibly one will be counted off due to not getting 5% (Sosa).
So that leads me to the heart of the reason I decided to write this, the 2016 1st year ballot players is pretty terrible. Only one player in my opinion had a Hall of Fame career, Ken Griffey Jr. Trevor Hoffman is also a first year ballot player, but he is the kind of player that will need 5-10 years to get in, because he will always be compared to the 2 closers who are believed to be better than him; Dennis Eckersly and Mariano Rivera. He will get votes, but I would be shocked if he got on as a first ballot, utteryly shocked. With that, this is the best time as ever to get people in, since the first ballot is pretty weak.
So we make another list of players that using Kurkjian's ideals, are Hall worthy

  • Barry Bonds
  • Roger Clemens
  • Ken Griffey Jr.
  • Gary Sheffield
  • Jeff Bagwell
  • Tim Raines
  • Mike Mussina
  • Curt Schilling
  • John Smoltz
  • Jeff Kent
  • Mark McGwire
  • Edgar Martinez
  • Alan Trammel (his last year)
  • Larry Walker
  • Lee Smith (2nd to last year)
  • Fred McGriff
  • Trevor Hoffman

So we have decreased the amount of "hall worth players" to 17 from 20 the year before. No better chance than now to get players attention to get in. With that, I think there is a good chance this will be a "cleanup year" to get some players in since there wont be alot of new players on that ballet.
That is just my 2 cents and things will even out over time, but the voting process needs to be modified, as we all know. I am interested in discussion or you just destroying my thoughts, and I look forward to them in the comments.
