There is a lot of different views on where the M's are at competitively, and what they should do to improve particularly the starting pitching in the comments of Matt's most excellent piece which you should go read if you have not (the piece, not the comments). Go ahead, I'll wait.
Did you know that according to Fangraphs, the M's are projected for the 6th best rotation for 2014, behind only the Rangers in the AL West? And even with the current state of the bullpen, we're projected to have the 9th best pitching staff again trailing only the Rangers?
I did not.
The position player side on the other hand, is bad. We're 11th worst, only three places (and one win) better than the Astros. We're below average at 1B, CF, RF and DH. LF projects okay with 560 PAs from LoMo/Hart, but the rest of the outfield... Not so much. If you want to look at players and not positions, Cano, Seager and Miller project as above average, with only Hart (1.9) Zunino and Morrison (1.7 each) particularly close (link).
Yes, they're projects, grains of salt and all that. But with at least some potential base to work with, I'm curious to see where the community thinks we're at in terms of contention. Are we a contender for 2014? If we're not, how close?
Also of note, MLB Daily Dish's take from today, and Jeff's take on who would Jimenez/Santana improve the most, both of which I found within minutes of publishing.
