My name is Matthew (aka McExpos) and I am a long, long-time reader and a more recent sometimes poster. I'd like to talk to you about hockey for a little bit if that's ok.
I've been watching a lot of the NHL playoffs this year - my roommate is a huge New York Rangers fan and my girlfriend's brother is a Boston Bruins fan - and I feel myself starting to succumb to the siren song of hockey. I've made fun of the sport for years and years. I grew up in Alaska, so I preemptively hated hockey to ward off all the sarcastic remarks I would get. However, I live in New York now, and I no longer feel so defensive about my roots. I'm willing to give it a shot.
The only problem is, I'm a man without a team. Due to growing up in Alaska, I have ties to the Pacific Northwest (thus my Mariners fandom) and I also have ties to Carolina (I'm a Panthers fan in the NFL) since my brother spent some time there. And I live in New York now, so technically I could appropriate one of the NY or NJ teams. So if you'd like to help me along in my hockey fandom, I would love two things:
1) Are there any really great resources that any new hockey fan should be familiar with?
2) Is there any reason I should root for Team X over Team Y?
I'm really just a blank slate right now, but I know there are a ton of hockey fans at LL and I thought I could use some of your collected wisdom to ease my entrance into the sport.
