The day is upon us. In about an hour, I will make the first pick the Mariners hold today at spot 12 in the Minor League Ball Community Mock Draft.
Honestly, I like a lot of the players slotted to go right before we pick and feel like there is a bit of a drop where we sit. As many are, I am slightly worried about Wilson although I think he has a lot of potential still. Peterson is an interesting guy but he plays in ideal conditions against questionable competition and he very well could be a 1B. Personally, I am not high on Crawford. I am beginning to look more and more at Stanek and Clarkin, although I did not expect to take a pitcher at this spot. For this first slot, I am hoping that one of Frazier/Meadows/Renfroe/Smith are available.
In the 2nd, there are a few guys I am focused on. Generally I like to see a good hit tool attached to a power hitter but a player like Tellez and his potential is alluring. Dustin Peterson is another guy I like a lot if he makes it that far as well as Tyler O'Neil. Pitching wise, I am looking at Driver or Emanuel. Driver I like a lot, especially if we pick Renfroe or Wilson in the 1st. Emanuel has great pitchability and I feel like he can find a few more ticks on a pro program. He could be a good pick if we are trying to save a bit of money for high school guys.
High school guys like Zack Collins to be exact. He has had some ups and downs this year and likely will go higher in a couple years after attending Miami. Personally, I feel he is better than Tellez and has the potential to be better than Smith. If Smith and Tellez are not the pick in the 1st or 2nd round, I will likely take Collins if he is available.Otherwise, I would likely look for a high school pitcher or a solid hitter here.
The 4th round is still up for grabs although Marcus Davis intrigues me. He has hit well in his college career and I am surprised he does not receive more attention at this point. Strikes me as a possible Mariners' pick.
