What makes an outfielder?

In my continued quest to advance my knowledge of baseball I was reading a Sullivan FanGraph article today and it occurred to me that I haven't a great grasp of what determines a certain player as being a left fielder vs. being a right fielder? And the same, to a lesser extent, for center field? Meaning why is one person considered perfect for left field and not right field, etc? This may sound like an easy question to answer but I do have some general ideas on why this is (speed, arm strength, throw accuracy, nowhere else to put him) and I know why Ibanez will never play center unless he joins a summer softball league. But I'm sure there are more intricate reasons for putting X player in left as opposed to right and vice versa. Please allow me to pick your brain on why you feel certain skill sets are important to one OF position over another. Thanks in advance from me and the many LL readers who are at the same knowledge level as I am. And for the love of god, if there's a good web link that answers this particular question please lemme know so to not waste your time.
