No insight there for any LL readers, but seems like a pretty good writeup for the ESPN crowd.
He didn’t go into a ton of depth, but I think he painted a fair picture of the current state of the team. The major glaring omission is that he failed to mention Munenori Kawasaki!
"The Mariners' payroll is expected to top $90 million again this year"
Cot’s has us at $72.5M, add in the minimum salary players and we’re probably around $80M. Jack Zduriencik recently said that if they were to add a piece it would be something small, so this is about it.
Cots isn't adding up anything for the cost controlled players on the 40 man.
24 or so x ~450,000 a piece = $10.8 million not curretly added to Cots. He’s also counting Ichiro’s deferred money into his annual salary, but isn’t considering the max value of the incentive contracts either, so it probably balances out.
So we’re more in the ~$83 million range at the moment. Should still have money left, but not as much as people think.

Players don't get the full $480K for being on the team a couple of weeks.

It's probably because I'm tired but... what?

Well, for one, being on the 40 man does not entitle a player the Major League minimum.

Well no, but if you look at the list of folks...
On the 2012-2017 payroll obligations there’s a lot of names there that WILL be on the team for a long time.
Jaso
Smoak
Wells
Wilhelmsen
Beavan
Carp
Furbush
Montero
Noesi
Ruffin
Seager
That’s 11 right there, an easy extra 4-5 million we have to add to payroll. And if you look at last year, several “other” players were used for significant periods of time. Some for injury replacement, some for veterans-who-suck replacement, some to get their feet wet. I didn’t include guys like Robles, Cesar Jimenez, Chavez, Delabar, Luetge, or Medina (~2.5 million there) because I don’t expect them to see significant playing time, though a couple might. But then you have Chris Gimenez, Saunders, Moore, Liddi, Peguero, Robinson, and Mike WIlson (~3.1 million here) who all saw at least some or significant playing time last season for whatever reason. Halman, of course, is left off for obvious tragic reasons.
There’s also other possibilities, players who could mature and end up on the big club. Say the team is sour on Peguero or Wilson and wont bring them up again. There are others, though, such as Catricala, Franklin, Triunfel, etc who could get purchased and added to the 40 man and then 25 man during the course of a season. Lots of relief arm choices, as well.
Even if they aren’t part of the payroll as of RIGHT NOW, I think we have to take into account an amount of money to cover these players. We’re saying we have ~$18-23 million to spend if we base the current payroll at ~$72 million and a perceived $90-95 million budget. That’s not accurate. So maybe I was a bit high with the 10 million mark, but that was a lazy estimation. It’s probably closer to around 8 million, but that’s still a significant chunk of change unaccounted for.

Don’t beat yourself up too much.
I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ugh
You can check Cots for the answer to that.
I checked myself, and the answer is no, we don’t owe Yuniesky, Carlos Silva or Milton Bradley anymore money.
3 down and 1 to go
Hear that Figgins?!?!
I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ugh
Did you say it out loud or just type it?

Maybe he does.
He types out “I love you Chone” and sighs forlornly.

I'm just gonna be honest and say what we're all thinking
