At those prices, maybe the Tigers saved your life...
Law of Logical Argument
Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.
That's a pretty good amount of money there.
Might be a little less than I expected, though. I was thinking more like 240
If your life is capable of being ruined by a non-signing of an athlete to a team I really want your life
Yeah man
Oh well. Guess I’ll be lobbying for a Prince concert now.

I will miss the Prince saga
The conversation, analysis, and the dream. Now my life has no meaning. Of course I’m joking, I’m damn sure glad we didn’t pay that much money for someone who can’t look down and see his peter.

Thought he wanted $1M per pound
I’m sure he didn’t lose THAT much weight, so he must have settled.
There goes the whole Jumbaco deal
Now the mariners will have to find another fat guy to fill the void.

Sorry dude
Didn’t mean to offend. Just a joke, although maybe in bad taste.

It's not about bad taste
it’s about fat jokes not being funny. Very little that offends most people offends me, but laziness in humor offends me like you wouldn’t believe, and 99.9999999% of fat jokes are lazy and not funny.
Nothing personal, just, as Homer Simpson said about his TV, “be more funny!”
And that's one individual's opinion
And you have every right to it. Maybe being fat and blond I have heard so many jokes I could have chosen to take personally that I got over the whole idea that they are personal long ago. As the voice of experience, though, I feel a responsibility to point out that if you spend your life getting annoyed at things like this and feel you have to respond you’re going to make yourself nuts. If you don’t find it funny, move on to the next comment. I can be pretty certain that my comment didn’t affect Prince Fielder one iota, but your need to respond in a nasty way did hurt my feelings – because you chose to make it personal. Don’t worry about long term damage though. I’m over it.
I'm annoyed because I spend a lot of time on LL and I want it to be a better place
I don’t care about Prince Fielder, I couldn’t care less about who is offended, but I want this community to be better than one that does nothing but lazy fat jokes. They’re not funny – they’re not offensive (I’m an overweight blond guy myself) but they’re also not funny in the slightest, and if you see 400 of them a day they get even less funny.
You know I agree
But it’s like, man I couldn’t help myself from time to time. I have seen various opinions about it on a few other posts and have decided to stop myself. You guys are correct and I will not be lazy in my humor. I will be committed to excellence in my humor. Now I’m just bullshitting but yeah, I’m done.

Agree to Disagree
is what we’ll have to do, I’m afraid. Thank you for your opinions on what is and is not funny, but I won’t be intimidated away from saying whatever I’m going to say. I see a lot of windmills in your future; good luck with that.
(And you read 400 fat jokes a day? Man, I admire your speed reading abilities!)
It's quite literally in the rules when you signed up that fat jokes are banned because they're easy and not funny.
I’ll repeat what I said in another thread:
1) You are not the first, nor the last person to try to stand up for something like this. Almost every person here that says fat jokes and the like are lazy, boring, and stupid ways to comment on this website started as someone just like you, and every one of them realized that, over time, this website is better because these rules are in place, because while they might not annoy you now, they will, and you’ll wish they were banned. They are bad, lazy comments that take no thought that anyone could have said, and if we allow them this place will turn into the rest of the Internet: Shitty. You may not believe it now, but neither did anyone else, and over time they eventually agreed.
2) If you don’t like the rule, email the site authors and ask to change it. But it’s in the rules – no fat jokes – so it’s banned. It’s not much more complicated than that. The site authors have email addresses in their profiles where you can ask them to repeal a rule, but until then it’s a rule.
3) Don’t be snotty. You want to fit in here, apparently, otherwise you wouldn’t still be commenting. PDB has been here for 6+ years, and you have not. Guess whose side most people will take. If you want to contribute, you’re going to have to not be snotty, or expect everyone to hate you and treat you accordingly until you leave on your own.
Good luck, champ.
...and now I'm here
Holy crap you have been here 6 years.
What in the world?
...and now I'm here
Yes, I have been here a long time
My purpose for coming here however has always been related to baseball, good insight, and exceptional commentary. I guess the new rules are:
Fat jokes = bad
Gang up, chastise, and attack = good.
For the record I was not rude in any way. I recognized and stated that we simply had different opinions. I tried to be constructive without being confrontational. Nice that you felt the need to jump in and defend pdb’s honor, but I certainly don’t need advice or guidance from either of you. I’m not trying to change rules – even those that came into existence after I signed up here.
I’ll continue to come here to read Jeff and Matthew because they are insightful and worth my time. The rest of you, eh, not so much.
Saying things like "good luck with that" and trying to mock PDB's fat joke comment is being snotty.
That’s also confrontational, since it’s designed specifically to get a defensive rise out of another user, just as “the rest of you, eh, not so much” is designed to do the same thing.
As for the rest of your comment, it’s needlessly controversial for something that’s fairly simple. Fat jokes (and easy jokes, to a lesser extent) are banned by the rules posted on this site and they’re enforced, ergo they must be followed. You are welcome, as always, to email the moderators if you think a rule should be changed, or flag a comment if you believe it to be insensitive or overly hostile.

You want confrontational?
Bite me, asshole – that’s confrontational.
Typing in all caps — that’s confrontational and a direct attempt to provoke a fight.
Saying "good luck with that" was not designed to get a rise out of anyone. I was only (and earnestly) trying to lend the benefit of my experience. Since I’m probably one of the oldest guys on here, I think I have that right. Nothing I said was intended to elicit an attack (from the first comment).
It wasn’t until the last line of my most recent post that I got nasty. And look how much provocation that took! If you want to be the "Fat-Joke Police," have at it.
If you want to continue this line of conversation, take it offline so as not to waste everyone else’s time (unless, of course, your real intent is to show off what a great online bully you are). My e-mail is kva15@comcast.net
I will not, however, spend any more time responding here.
You've called me an online bully while I haven't bullied you about anything.
You’ve also been passive aggressive. These are not productive behaviors, and I presume it will be obvious to you if you re-read what you wrote why they’re not generally tolerated.

You Are Wrong
Against my better judgement and attempts otherwise I am going to post once moe in this thread because it is inmportant to tell you that you are wrong, on many levels.
First, I went back and read Matthew’s Posting Guidelines (which came into existence long after I joined LL). Rule 13 does not say “No Fat Jokes.” The points are 1) don’t be intentionally offensive, and 2) don’t keep harping on a subject. In the latter category an example was made of “Jack Cust fat jokes.”
Second, Rule 8 addresses proper procedure if you are offended by something. Typing a smartass title in all caps is not “question it (politely) before attacking it.” Ironically, the very first post under Matthew’s rules was from pdb, saying “If you don’t like something you read, please do not post a comment that merely says "this sucks" or something like that. Just stop reading and move to another thread.” pdb’s reponse, although longer than 2 words, was representative of the above. So, wrong again.
Third, you’ve called me passive aggressive. You are wrong again. I was only trying to respond in a way that did not provoke a fight. I didn’t attack anyone until thoroughly provoked and ganged up upon (I am assuming that pdb and CapSea are not one in the same). I was not looking to instigate an online fight because I like this place and feel that those squabbles take away from the goal of the site. My mistake was in thinking I could make a reply and that would be the end of it. The two of you certainly aren’t going to go away without having the last word. As for passive aggressive… I am anything but. If we were in the same location and you treated me the way you have (lies and personal attacks), I’d kick your fucking ass. Non-passive enough for you?
Fourth, you are an online bully. You’ve modified the rules to give yourself the opportunity to attack someone. Although given an e-mail address to take the discussion offline, you choose to continue here. I guess my case about you showing off and being an online bully is pretty well substantiated.
If you have any other thoughts, go back to the title of this reply, because you most likely are.
I agree with you mostly.
Except that dude isn’t trying to be a bully and Matthew himself has stated that fat jokes are against the rules.
And sometimes you just have to accept the community. All-caps subject lines in response to fat jokes have been normal lately.
Plus, your fat joke sucked, so yeah.
