With the second pick, Mariners select P Danny Hultzen.
As predicted by….practically no one. If there’s one thing this organization doesn’t do it’s draft for need. Good luck trying to guess who they’ll draft if the pick isn’t obvious (ex. Dustin Ackley).
Good point.
Although no one really knew that Rendon would fall that far so he was the “obvious” pick.

I wouldn't say no one
Sackmann saw the first chinks in Rendon’s armor back in 2009-2010, and he definitely saw Hultzen was extremely underrated since 09-10 as well, even if he didn’t vocalize it.
Acknowledging that the organization seems to take no issue in drafting with their own depth...
I feel like between Miller and Franklin and maybe Triunfel, we might not need another shortstop unless he’s an elite one. For what we have, Byron Buxton seems intriguing because he’s an upper tier outfield defender and could develop some good power in time. Besides, the literary nerd in me would just love to have King Felix and Lord Byron.
Otherwise, I’m pretty intrigued by Trey Williams. LH bat at the hot corner? Plus defense? HR threat? Yes, please. But for whatever reason most mocks I’ve seen generally have him around #10.
Trey Williams (Valencia HS) is a RH bat.
Nick “Billy” Williams (Ball High) is a left-handed hitting outfielder. Sheesh, Jay not you too.
Shame on me for using the link above.
#12 – New York Mets
Trey Williams
Position: 3B
School: Valencia HS (California)
Throws: R; Bats: L
Measurables: 6’1, 210
DOB: 03/09/1994
Perfect Game has him as a right-hander. They’re probably right.
Sorry
mlb.com has them as a lefty batter. I’ll try and get some confirmation. Thanks for pointing it out.

Has him**
but you are right. Found some video of him. Definitely a RHB. Will fix.

Why aren't we hearing nearly as much noise this year about the top draft prospects?
Is it because the last few had some very elite prospects, or is it because this one is lackluster overall? Do the Mariners stand a good shot at getting an “elite” prospect, and by that I mean… ehh.. what do I mean.. I know that they will obviously get a good prospect, but are there more than three guys in this draft that are super exciting?

The general consensus is that this year's draft class is pretty weak, even more so when compared to the classes of the past few years.
There are some pretty intriguing names but, aside from Appel, there aren’t many huge-impact/moderate-risk players like last year’s group.
I like
this class, top to bottom, better than 2009 and 2010. 2009 had only two “elite” guys in Strasburg and Ackley, and then 2010 had 3 in Harper, Taillon, and Machado.
Last year just happened to have an insane 7: Cole, Hultzen, Bauer, Bundy, Starling, Rendon, and Bradley.
It’s still unclear, but I personally see this year’s class having 4 right now. I’m not a big fan of Marrero (sorry) so he’s not included, but my 4 are Giolito, Zunino, Appel, and Buxton in that order.

Alphabetically?
I mean, that is a way to order things, I guess.
Anyone that thinks Yuniesky Betancourt outplayed anyone last year, you're a moron, and I hope your genes are stricken from the world to prevent further breeding.

Sorry
guys. I somehow didn’t have the scouting report write up on Marrero. Didn’t make it from draft to final cut.
It’s been updated.
