Gutierrez Almost Certainly Done for 2011
He suffered a "severe" oblique strain today and those don't bounce back in just a few weeks and even if they did, what's the point of rushing him back?

At least he finished reasonably strong, and he'll have more time to recondition himself for next year.
I think a fresh start next season is what he really needs.
Missing spring training and the first month of the season didn’t do him any good.

Finished strong?
.310 wOBA in August isn’t strong

Combined with his elite defense, I'll take it.

He is due 5.5 million next year and 7 million the year after that which is quite a bit for our roster.
I’d like him to be an above average player. With his contract he doesn’t have to be great but we have talented young outfielders that can probably hit better and do a decent job in the field.
Hopefully next year he will be healthier and can get a new start.

I'm not saying he is bad but this season was about as bad as I had expected was possible from Guti
In my mind I have counted on Guti being a really good player in the future. Like Ichiro, Guti’s season has caused me to rethink what I should be expecting. This worries me because if the 2012 M’s were going to be really good these players were going to have a big role in that.

So... Trayvon in CF? I'd be happy to get a look at him out there for the rest of the season
Sounds like he has a below average arm for the position but I haven’t seen him yet
Oh yeah, those guys.
Maybe you know what the regimen is for this type of injury, anything like the platelet injections I read about pitchers getting?
Put Guti on the 60 day and call up Catricala
Carp can play left and Cat can dh. I know this probably isn’t gonna happen but might as well give him a taste. Might be the best right handed hitter in the organization at the moment and it would be a good way to reward the monster year he has had.
Seems pointless considering the 60 day DL goes away in the offseason so we'd have to DFA someone to get Guti back.
It just seems pointless. We don't need someone to DH right now. Why not just wait the month to put Catricala on the 40 man?
Because Cat doesn't even need to be added to the 40-man this year?

I should have checked that. I assumed he was Rule 5 for some reason.

Nope, too soon.
I think we’re looking at ’07 high school kids and ’08 college draftees this year.

Did you miss the part where I said it's not gonna happen?
Just a fantasy scenario because I want to be able to watch him hit, nothing more than that. It’s not like he is that far away from the majors at this point, going to be hard to keep him off the team all next year if he keeps being one of the best hitters in minor league baseball.
Griffey's coming back!

And by the contracted 'us' I mean them, by which I mean the Mariners organization.
Because I’m not parting with my money to allow Ken Griffey to play CF again. Man’s gotta buy noodles you know?
Are you using your money to buy high-quality noodles, store-brand noodles, or cup noodles?

Even with a .245 wOBA, he still was worth 1.3 WAR this year
Extrapolated for 600 PA, that’s right around 2 WAR. And even with the higher salary figures coming up in the next few years, at 2 WAR per year he’d still be providing better value than you pay on the open market in free agency.
While all his positive contributions this year come from defense, and UZR isn’t the best statistic over the span of one year, he’s had a UZR/150 over 25 three of the last four years. Even without any offensive improvement, he’s still a valuable player. And I can’t imagine that he won’t have at least SOME improvement. This can’t be his true talent level offensively.
