Ichiro Suzuki's Power Season
It's all Ichiro, all the time! I'm in a rush, but this is a link to my latest guest blog for Brock & Salk, tackling the issue of Ichiro switching to hitting for power. Maybe I'll write more about this in the afternoon. Or maybe I will not. Stay tuned! Keep refreshing!

If Ichiro came out and said "this season, I'm hitting for power and not worrying about batting average" how many do you think he would hit?

expect the unexpected
If Ichiro is going to make an unprecedented change in his game, I think he should give pitching a real shot! We’ve seen him throw strikes from right field, I want to see him on the mound. And we know he’s always wanted to pitch. Imagine the possibilities, the first DH/P ever.

Micah Owings
Year, G as Pitcher, G as Hitter
2007, 29, 35
2008, 22, 40
2009, 26, 41
2010, 22, 27
2011, 29, 30
His WAR for 2007 was crazy... 1.7 as a Pitcher and another 1.5 as a hitter.
Year, WAR as Pitcher, WAR as Hitter, Total
2007, 1.7, 1.5, 3.2
2008, 1.0, 1.0, 2.0
2009, -0.4, 1.0, 0.6
2010, -0.1, 0.2, 0.1
2011, 0.2, 0.1, 0.3
He trains in Japan during the offseason.
A few years ago, he gave pitching a shot in the bullpen. He reportedly got it up above 90mph. But the next day his shoulder was really sore and I think he decided against doing that any more.

Didn't he throw a 60 pitch bullpen session or something, including curves?

He used to get it up to 145 km/h. Ridiculous.

Ichiro back in HS, wore the #1 jersey...
…and was the ace pitcher for Aikoudai Meiden. Of course, that changed when he got drafted, but he has done it.

What if this is the power Ichiro
Maybe he’s one step ahead of you and the reason he isn’t hitting .300+ this season is because he already made the change.
Oh no!

I still think that he tried this already in 2005
He went up there trying to pull everything and only hit 15 home runs. He posted a .350 OBP, which was his worst until this year. I think he was reacting to being labeled a slap hitter. Around August, he seemed to become aware that he might miss 200 hits, and went back to a more classic, spray the ball approach. At least, that’s how it looked to my eyes.
I think his downfall in ‘05 was that he still wasn’t that selective. He was still a hacker. I think that if he wants to succeed as a power guy, he needs to stalk his pitch until he gets to two strikes. He needs to swing like hell if he gets it, and walk if he doesn’t. Once he’s at two strikes though, go back to the classic Ichiro approach — which I imagine would be something like asking a person walking on their hands to try using their feet again.
That said, I don’t think Ichiro is a power hitter. I think that version of Ichiro is a myth which baseball fans have created because that Ichiro appeals to them, and in fifty years we’ll be telling our kids stories about how Ichiro journeyed to the land of the dead to pose questions to a long-dead seeress. Ichiro is a hall of fame leadoff hitter, one of the best ever, and if watching him play like Juan Pierre for five years is the penalty I have to pay for the 11 years of amazing we just got, I’m perfectly happy to pay up.
Errr...ten, but I agree.

Juan Pierre isn't even all that bad, this year he's been pretty lame, but he's usually in the 2-3 WAR range
Ichiro sticking around for a few years hitting .270-.280 with 40+ stolen bases is better in the lead off spot than anything else the M’s could put there. I’m comfortable with his hitting decline at this point (as long as there aren’t any extended slumps) what I’m most worried about is what kind of value he can continue to provide in the field.

I don't know
I’m sure my memory is flawed, but I have never seen him hit the ball out to center or the other way before, and rarely do I see him hit and extra base hit with authority either way.
Baseball-Reference says 79 pulled home runs, and 16 up the middle
where “up the middle” can mean right-right-center. So, yeah.

He frequently doesn't even take complete swings
He’ll drop the bat in the middle of his swing to break out of the box because he knows the ball is already headed fair. Sometimes it goes up the middle for a hit, or finds a hole in the left of the infield. Sometimes it goes to the 3B/SS and he beats the throw, sometimes not. But those are swings where he isn’t trying to get it out of the infield and he certainly isn’t trying to pull the ball.
If he decided to turn those into real swings — and he actually was able to do so, to make good contact with some loft — a few of them would get out of the park, and a few more would be gappers. But a lot of them would find outfielders’ gloves (and some might get pulled down by infielders, too). Would that create more outs than he is making now, especially if he’s not getting the infield hits like he used to? That, I can’t say.
"lets just say bye bye Ichiro and move on so we can start winning ball games, and have our announcers more concerned about winning then his stupid 200 hit counter!"
Guys! We’ve been missing the point the whole time! If only the announcers were more concerned about the team winning we could be a playoff team! I think it’s high time we called for a regime change in the booth. Rizzs, Sims, and Blowers are only holding this team back

What I really wish would happen...
…is that we, or the ballclub, would educate the masses about baseball statistics. In that sense we’d have smarter fans who wouldn’t spew the crap that I hear on the radio almost all the time.
And it doesn’t necessarily get any better when I go to games. I hear the same talk between people in the stands. I don’t care if you agree or disagree with the direction the M’s are taking as long as you know what you’re talking about, and most often they don’t.
We’ve started a bit with the board on the right side now showing slash lines for batters, and K/9 ratios and the like for pitchers. But it would be nice somehow for perhaps a mid-inning skit on the big board talking about statistics.

Well that was a hacked up sentence.... Supposed to be...
