OT on Aug. 29th-- Monday Morning What-ifs.

On Monday mornings it can make it hard to concentrate on what you are supposed to concentrate on... so, here are a few things you can mull over at your desk, with the appropriate "working hard" expression.

What if Rick Ankiel was still a pitcher? Even if it means not seeing plays like this?

Why shouldn't Helen Mirren have played just about every iconic movie role?

What if advertising guys had meddled in classic novels?

Why aren't there better alternate history movies?

Any one else have some food for thought? Other than, say, fake food like these.

I could be wrong about when she became a sex symbol, but it seems like Helen Mirren is the oldest women to ever start becoming a sex symbol at a certain age for the first time.

Also, I could have sworn she was the woman in Swimming Pool, but now I’m seeing that was Sarah Morton. I don’t know why I always thought it was Mirren.

This is where it was hard for me to quantify when she became "famous" in the states in films.

I see she did years of theatre work in London and looks like her first Academy Award nomination was in 1994. In my mind, she only became famous in the last decade, but I knew that was probably only because of my age or something. I forgot she was in Teaching Ms Tingle. I will have to re-watch that.

I definitely wish there were more good alternate history movies.

But “Red Dawn” is a god damn classic. One of my favorites.

Was Red Dawn really an alternate history movie?

I saw it when it came out, and it seemed set in the present (or just enough into the future to give NATO time to dissolve).

It's not a reenactment of the proposal or anything.

It’s included in a lot of wedding photographer packages – you go out with your photographer for a few hours and they just take photos of you in some specific, cool location (your choice or theirs). The photos are basically to document the engagement phase of your relationship, and a lot of people send them out with their save the dates. Or put them on their wedding websites…. or send them out with Christmas cards or whatever.

Also it serves to get you comfortable with your photographer (and them with you) so that you’re comfortable and relaxed with them and their style on your wedding day.

by JAH on Aug 29, 2011 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Why are movies so simple?

Because it’s very difficult to cram enough back story to make the alternate understood and have a plot into two hours and make it through to production. You’d mostly have to skimp on the backstory and rely on perception and awareness to carry through the suspension of disbelief and that’s asking a lot of an audience. It’s a risk and why take a risk when you can green light Back to the Future 7?

by Matthew on Aug 29, 2011 12:13 PM PDT reply actions

I'm not even sure the movie people haven't just given up

Have you seen the movies that have come out the past three months? Every week I look at them and say, “Oh, man, this is the worst week for movies.” And then the next week is worse. The box office receipts have reflected that, they seem to be getting only the people that just go to movies regardless of what is playing.

I’m hoping it leads to them green-lighting more ‘risky’ ventures but I’m not really holding my breath because they are movie people and haven’t proven to be very bright and forward-thinking.

by Gihyou on Aug 29, 2011 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

"Movie people"

as with everything else, there are layers here. Mainstream movie people have indeed given up – they wait for the Marvel machine to vomit forth another dumb superhero movie, they mad-lib their way through another vapid romantic comedy (SPOILER ALERT: They get married!), and they blow stuff up.

Meanwhile, down here in the substrate, you get good independent films, documentaries, and just general small films that no one notices in the megaplex but absolutely blow the megaplex dreck away. Find these films and focus only on them, and you’ll be much more encouraged by the state of film today.

When I said 'movie people' I meant the mainstream movie producers/directors/etc

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

What I hope is that the good stuff made by the independent films gets more exposure and encourages more variety in multiplex offerings than nothing but the brain-dead movies. I have enjoyed quite a few vapid movies in my time and don’t expect every movie to be amazing, but I’d like to be able to see something original and interesting sometimes without having to hunt them down.

While a mess of a movie for many reasons

the fact that “Watchmen” was set not only in an alternative history, but as an early 1980s period piece in that alternative history did not help when it came to suspending disbelief.

The movie with the most recent success that seems to eschew the normal bad mainstream cinema is Inception.

Say what you want about it, but it was pretty complex, definitely not the usual Transformers ish.
Some movies that I’ve watched lately and really loved (although they aren’t new) are Mulholland Dr. and Memento.

TV is now the place for stories that require time to lay out backstory and depth

which is fascinating, given how maligned it is as a medium. And it’s not that the lowest-common-denominator fears were really misplaced, it’s just that Ow My Balls reality tv and long-form, complex dramas now sit side by side.

I hope that’ll happen with movies. Avatar and others have proven you can make some money even with a 3 hour run time; maybe someone will green-light a 3 hour movie that’s actually interesting.

Holy shit, I had no idea they played football in there.

Way back in high school, my jazz band played the Lionel Hampton Jazz Fest there. I also thought it resembled a large hangar of some kind.

During the fest, my friends and I were exploring the venue, being stupid teenagers and whatnot, and came across a man passed out cold in a dark corner of the bleachers. We actually thought he might be dead at first, but then he moved. We flipped out.

by KC Mariner on Aug 29, 2011 12:45 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I won't be going to see it if that's the case.

I don’t get what’s so hard about adapting the book to the screen. There are a few interviews in the book that could be cut and still have the story come across in 100 minutes. The book was wildly successful precisely because of it’s format and style so the answer to make it a blockbuster is to change all that?

No matter where you go, there you are.

by KC Mariner on Aug 29, 2011 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

It's the Brad Pitt factor

As it said in that link – nobody wants to see Brad Pitt interview people. So cast a relative unknown in the role and make the movie like the book.

by pdb on Aug 29, 2011 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly.

There would have been a buzz about the movie without a “name” actor attached to it. The way this movie makes money is by having the millions of people who read the book want to go see it (hopefully more than once). You do that by keeping the elements that made those millions of people fans originally and letting the buzz build. You don’t need name actors to ensure it makes money. Star Trek is a good example.

No matter where you go, there you are.

by KC Mariner on Aug 29, 2011 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Bourne wasn't really faithful yet was awesome.

I was kind of expecting something like this honestly, I’m kind of expecting the multiple story line plot where it jumps from different characters but all interconnected, but it’s going to be missing a lot of the impact of the hindsight and reflections that the book revolves around.

You got slurved!

by Slurvey on Aug 29, 2011 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions

But at least Bourne the film followed the general theme of Bourne the book

World War Z the book was a series of interviews of survivors, fighters, and others involved in fending off the apocalypse, and it was intended to read (and did read) as a more academic work, a study of society as told by those who lived through the events being discussed. The film is ditching that entirely and turning it into a standard zombie chase/hide/survive story, which zzzzzzzzz oh my god not another one.

by pdb on Aug 29, 2011 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions

That kind of format sounds more appropriate for a mini series to be honest.

My CU lets me bank at several Portland-area CU’s (both in person and via their ATM’s), and I also have access to a pretty big network of ATM’s located at 7-11’s all over the city/state. A lot of CU’s also refund ATM fees if you find yourself out of network for some reason.

For example, if I ended up in Madison, which is one of the PhD programs I’d be looking at, the nearest deposit ATM would be in Rockfort, Illinois.

If I was still living in WA I could tell you all about the Chase stuff.

But I’ve been gone for more than a year and a half. I’d heard from former colleagues that things were changing with the old accounts etc, but if you’re studying they have a college checking that’s free with no strings attached unless it’s changed since January 2010, as long as you can jump through a couple of simple hoops.

2006 was my favorite.

(Earliest version I played) I would always make a 7’, 400 pound safety or linebacker with 99/100 hit power, turn injury frequency up to maximum and the game difficulty to rookie, then use the hit stick to tackle the opponent ballcarrier. It was amazing.

My guess is that Husky tickets have historically always been in high demand, and that this year is the final year of “old” Husky Stadium, so they’re probably charging an extra premium.

I’m going to tonight’s game (it’s my first) and yes, my eyes nearly popped out of my skull when I saw the prices. I dunno how they do it, but I guess having a million year’s worth of alumni means the demand is pretty high even if the team sucks.

The Netherlands would like to host regular season MLB games.

by Thingray on Aug 31, 2011 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree MLB would probably prefer a larger country.

Still, it looks like there is a foundation that can be built on in The Netherlands. Instead of trying to sell it in a country that doesn’t have much interest, why not encourage the game in one that does?

Bigger country =/= bigger market.

Baseball got to the Netherlands around the beginning of the 20th century and they’ve had their own operational league since 1922. In Germany, its spread is still largely tied to American military bases, which means it gets around slower. Very different circumstances.

You may be underestimating the sports' popularity over there.

Besides, every year teams sign about half a dozen Dutch prospects for the minor leagues. If they want the regular season games as recognition for their role in a larger world baseball community, I say do it.

You may be right.

I don’t know the population figures for the Netherlands, I’m just thinking that even if you have a rabid fan base, if it isn’t big enough it’s not worth the trip.

Baseball could be huge in the Vatican, but you wouldn’t hold a game in the square for a few dozen fans.

I could see MLB going about this the way they did in Japan.

If memory serves correctly the first games in Japan were exhibition games carved out of the end of Spring Training. This tested the logistics and reception to the games prior to making a full on regular season commitment. Get a couple of teams that play on the east coast and train in FL to play a one or two game set in late March (although not sure if the climate in Northern Europe would be the greatest then). It might fall flat, but planned correctly I think it could be a success.

No matter where you go, there you are.

A love letter to "Raiders of the Lost Ark" by Damon Lindelof:

Here

This exchange cracked me up:

I was much more interested in seeing "Clash of the Titans," which opened the same day and had a Pegasus in it. Ultimately, however, my dad argued that "Raiders" was the superior pick because it had Han Solo. I narrowed my eyes suspiciously — "But… Han Solo is frozen in carbonite."

"This movie happened before that." My dad responded.

"How could it happen before a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away?" I reasoned.

"Because this was longer ago."

"How much longer?"

My dad leaned down, quite serious, and whispered, "The 1930s."

Anyone know anything about Tyler Burgoon?

He is a reliever in Clinton, his reverse platoon split is what really caught my interest.
1.24 ERA vs LHB in 29 ip
3.38 ERA vs RHB in 31 ip
I think the difference is mainly caused by how extreme his ground ball tendencies are against the left handed hitters and am wondering what it is about his stuff that causes the all those ground balls.

Also curious about how highly he is thought of as a relief prospect as his numbers are pretty good.

by Vegasexpat on Sep 2, 2011 11:55 PM PDT reply actions

I just realized how dumb it is to use ERA split like that

Still curious about the crazy ground ball tendencies against the lhb.

by Vegasexpat on Sep 3, 2011 12:06 AM PDT up reply actions

That's not necessarily worrisome.

He could be using a two-seam, something like a sinker or more likely a cutter, to get some kind of effect on left-handed bats. A split difference of more grounders, if it meant more hits (it doesn’t in this case) wouldn’t an issue in any case, because minor league defenses tend to be poorer in quality. In front of major league defenders, more of those grounders would turn into outs. Right now, I find it more strange that the walk rate would be substantially higher against right-handed bats. Maybe the slider is too snappy or something.

As for the rest of his stuff, he has a fastball in the low-90s (that’s 90s, not around 90 mph) and a slider that grades quite well on its break and movement. His command, May aside, is generally thought of as being pretty good. The traditional scouting consensus is that he’s too small to handle starting, and the M’s haven’t really tried it with him yet, so I wouldn’t expect them to. I could see him slotting into the Jackson bullpen to start next season. I’m kind of surprised that he spent the whole year in Clinton.

Hmmm...

MLBTR-
“Kotchman, still just 28, has stepped in and hit .312/.380/.429 in 487 plate appearances since being promoted. He isn’t hitting for much power (just eight homers), but he’s drawing walks (42) and putting the ball in play (55) while providing his usual strong defense. After years of struggling against left-handers, Kotchman is hitting a respectable .300/.336/.367 against southpaws this season. "

by BigR on Sep 10, 2011 9:38 AM PDT reply actions

And, you know, the next paragraph...

“There are reasons to believe that the improved performance is unsustainable, however. Kotchman’s batting average on balls in play (.341) is the highest of his career (by far) even though there’s been no significant change in his batted ball profile. More than half of the balls he puts in play are hit on the ground, just a quarter are fly balls, and fewer than one in five is a line drive. It could work, but it hasn’t for him in the past.”
