The (potential) solution to Prince Fielder fantasies.
Am I the only one who thinks Jason Kubel would be a much better pickup than Fielder? Yes, he's Prince Fielder and all...but Kubel would be a solid "low risk, high ceiling" type of deal. He's a lefty who can hit for decent average (.275) as well as dingers (20ish per season) and slugging (approx .450). His OBP isnt too shabby at approx .335 either. The best part is he's dirt cheap compared to Fielder. While he does play in a crowded position at the moment (Left field and DH), it would at least be SOMEone with a proven stick.
This little blurb is less of a statistical analysis and more of a "Why not this guy?" piece. I fully understand that I used rough estimates of the four major batting statistics..but he is a guy who should at LEAST be discussed.
Unless I'm missing something like he roams the streets at night looking for puppies to feast upon, which is why nobody wants him.

With Carp already around, Kubel doesn't offer much

We have Carp, Wells, and Smoak taking all the positions he would fill for the Mariners.
And Jason Kubel wouldn’t be a significant upgrade over any of them.
RE: "but he is a guy who should at LEAST be discussed."
You kind of already disqualified him with the bit about how our DH and LF positions are jam packed with people.
Fans are typically idiots.

The best solution to Prince Fielder fantasies is to not fantasize about Prince Fielder

Or turn the fantasy into reality
But turning fantasy into reality can be risky business

I look at those numbers...
And with Wells and Carp, you should get pretty close to that production (probably not 2009, but every other season). Those two guys will cost less than that one guy and they are both younger.
What is going on?
This is the third rosterbastion today. Everyone just needs to stop.

THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
How come you can do all this other great shit, but you can't lie the fuck down and sleep?
The only reason to dislodge Carp from the DH role is if you are going big, so to speak, with someone like Fielder.
Not some sidegrade/downgrade/minor potential upgrade like Kubel. Even if Kubel does end up presenting an upgrade, you save a lot of cash going with Carp. Kubel is making $5.25 million this year vs league minimum for Carp.
I go out of town for a few weeks, come back and Mike Carp is all of a sudden a piece of the future?
I feel like I have missed something.

For now, he's looking like a solid choice for DH.

Probably odds-on, at this point.
Unless he does something to prove otherwise, I’m thinking the job is his to lose next year. Or at least a near full-time role in a job share for LF/1B/DH.

Teach Jason Kubel to play 3rd base. Then, we'll talk.

I just tell folks with that fantasy to trade their house for a Ferrari
Because spending close to 30% of your payroll on a player with no defensive value makes as much sense.
In fact, at least you could sleep in the trunk of a Ferrari; Fielder’s trunk has too much junk.
