Justin Smoak has a fractured nose, sustained after a grounder took a bad hop
He's undergoing further examination as we electronically communicate. One way or another, the universe seems committed to getting this guy on the disabled list.

This doesn't make me want to thank the baseball gods
In fact: fuck them. Taken across the full expanse of Mariners history we are at absolute best even on baseball luck. For each of the two amazing seasons we’ve had (neither of which resulted in so much as a World Series appearance) we’ve had a full decade of fucking bullshit. Hell we had one and a half of them before the first truly exciting season.
I understand the team being punished when it does stupid shit. We deserve that. But seriously. Of the players we were counting on this season, the baseball gods broke the hip then arm of one, the thumbs then nose of another and fucking intestinal tract of a third. Oh, and made two others just mysteriously suck from day one. FUCK. THAT. SHIT.

No, I mean thank god Ackley didn't take one in the face
He kind of looks like Montgomery Clift, pre-accident
I'm not familiar with facial injuries.
How long does one typically take off to recover?

It depends on whether or not it it involves his orbit, sinuses or is impinging on anything
And it also depends on whether it needs to be re-set.
It all just depends.

So at worse (ignoring death, mental unrest, sagging eyeballs and imploded face) 30 days?
Best case, face mask thingy and tomorrow?

Would he really need to go on the DL for a broken nose?
I’m sure it hurts like hell, but its not like its a broken wrist or something that baseball players use in a game.
But if he was pegged in the face while at the plate,
It could be real bad.

if he gets hit in the face while batting, prior injuries are pretty much irrelevant
think atom bomb after carpet bombing.

Sounds like a shitty plot for Final Destination 6
...and now I'm here

Not much of a loss for the M's
Hitting .125 in the last 35 games with zero HRs, please take your time coming back those kind of numbers we can live without.
I believe they're sincere. His slump has lost a lot of fans.
I still want him to play 1B. I see a young talented guy who is learning. Good learning involves failure.

I wish he would have just gone on the DL when he hurt his thumb.
So people wouldn’t be talking about an injury as though it’s a slump. Same with Guti, to be honest.
I think it comes down to building trade value.
For some odd reason, learning pains are perhaps seen as safer than being fragile.
Only a guess.

Obviously it's not too fragile seeing as he was playing through it.
Albeit not playing very well (similar to Guti).

I would guess going on the DL would appear on your permanent record.

Cliff Lee must be fragile then.
Cuz, you know, the DL.
Nothting to be glad about here, but...
I feel like he should have sat out and rested months ago. Instead, he got suckered into baseball’s culture of manhood, and played through the pain (badly). Healing is the next market inefficiency.
I feel bad for him. Dude can't catch a break this year.
Hopefully it won’t be a big issue that keeps him out long. Fingers crossed.
If it weren't for bad luck
Justin Smoak would have no luck at all.
Get well soon, Smoak. I liked the ball you hit the hell out of in the first.
