We heard some while back that the Mariners were going to participate in the It Gets Better campaign, and now the commercial is out. Featured are Brendan Ryan and Brandon League, along with a bunch of other athletes from other Seattle teams I don't recognize because it turns out I'm almost completely ignorant about area sports. Good work by all, although I don't think Brandon League has a future in acting, or reading.

A gay joke in a thread about a commercial against gay bullying.
Nice.

Not quite sure what I was thinking when I wrote this
I was attempting a wise crack but it turned out to be neither funny nor wise. I meant nothing malicious by it. I applaud the Seattle athletes as the world would be a better place if LGBT could live openly. I’m sorry for the offensive nature of my initial post.

The press release (on both the Storm and Mariners webites) list Mike Williams as the Seahawk.
Link.
No matter where you go, there you are.
You are not alone; unless you plan to play in MLB or the NFL.

I dunno. Gareth Thomas is a good example of a gay dude playing a super macho sport.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we see an out of the closet player some time in the next few years.

I love that some people assume that all male athletes are heterosexual
(not that you think that, sea-townie, just a general observation)
Also, as the first comment illustrates, some people assume all female atheletes are gay.
No matter where you go, there you are.
I always just assumed that this article was completely correct.
I always chuckle that soccer and women's sports are the same tab
The Onion is too clever for their own good.

They should've filmed this post Ryan's fu manchu.
As it is, he totally looks like the kind of guy that would bully an LGBT teen, or try and pick them up in his 1986 Ford Econoline.

He delivers his lines in a very sincere fashion, though.
I’ll give him that.

I think he had some issues with being singled out for his ADD or ADHD.
So I would guess this is an issue that hits pretty close to home for him.
Sobriety ain't too bad...
How?
ADHD and being gay are different issues.

How?
Because someone who was the target of bullies or peer abuse is potentially more empathetic to those in a similar situation, regardless of the cause?

Agreed.
While It Gets Better was inspired most directly by intolerance of homosexuality, its intent is to support all kinds of victims of bullying. Which is a good thing, and I think it is a better situation to have a bunch of rich, presumably-straight, traditionally-manly pro athletes telling just gay teens it gets better, which would strike many as pretty transparent (even if everyone involved were genuinely invested in the project).

The "There Is No Floor Campaign" doesn't have the same ring to it
Do you want to hear about my fantasy team?

'let's dig to China!'
No. That doesn’t work either.

The message I get from this:
Nobody who plays sports is gay, but we should be nice to you. Not exactly in the same vein and the other spots.
Guess we'll find out tonight!

"It get's better"
I thought Jack Z already did a commercial promising this?
RIP Dave Niehaus.

Okay, so Brendan Ryan doesn't just have an awesome mustache.
He gives hilarious interviews. He plays his heart out (and that’s not code for “tries hard but is not very good”). And he is supporting It Gets Better. Brendan Ryan is now officially my favorite Mariner.
Also, way to go League! He “plays his heart out” on this line reading (and this time it is code, but I still like him).
