Doug Fister traded to Tigers.
Reported by Jerry Crasnick and Danny Knobler. A reliever may be headed to Detroit as well, and Charlie Furbush is one of the players who could be coming back. If this is true, I ask Z to please do something to make me not hate this trade.
Edit: It's official, per Heyman. No mention yet of who's coming back, but Pauley may be gone too.
Edit 2: So far, it's Fister and Pauley for Casper Wells, Charlie Furbush, and AA 3B Francisco Martinez. Larry Stone says there could still be a "significant name" headed to the Mariners.

Deal is official...
If all that’s coming back is Furbrush and nothing else very interesting, I’m pretty underwhelmed by this move.
Heyman just tweeted it.
No other details though.
Yes, we have a coupon.

That's pretty much my thought..
Furbush is a massive lefty with a solid K/BB throughout the minors and Wells, if he was 3 years younger would be very interesting.

We wanted to trade Vargas...
Not trade for another Vargas. I’m not liking this.
The reports I read on Furbush said he throws 3/4 with good deception but has problems with control.
He can miss bats and that’s neat but if he’s throwing 3/4 as a lefty, good luck with righties. I wonder how he splits?
Well, In AAA this year..
Vs. L – 17.2 IP, 8 H, 20/5 K/BB 1.45 G/FB and a .138 average against
Vs. R – 36.1 IP, 27 H, 41/11 K/BB 0.93 G/FB and a .199 average against
Quite a large difference in G/FB

Seems like many think he's a reliever long-term which tempers my enthusiasm for this return a little bit.
But it’s hard not to eyeball his minor league numbers as a starter and think there’s something there.
Wells could very well be a useful major leaguer, I suppose, and Furbush should be cheap and cheerful.
If Fister was that well regarded, why not try to get some higher upside players out of him?
I'll say this.. Casper Wells could be quite useful
PLUS, @UpstateBaller – he is on Twitter! Upside!

Not a replacement for carp
Carp moves to dh, wells steps into left field. He immediately becomes the third best hitter on this team.
I’m not loving this deal, I hope we got a solid prospect too, but I don’t hate it.

Not a fan if this and Furbush is all we get.

So far this trade sucks.
If all those 3 names are the names involved, none of them are more than 2 years younger than Fister, and none of them seem to have a higher ceiling than Fister. What the what is going on? A cheap Doug Fister seemed very valuable to me.

Maybe additional ammunition for another move?
Seems like two ML-ready pitching prospects could be pieces to include in another deal.. I just.. I dunno.

I don't get it. This would have made a lot more sense of Fister last year, but he seems to have really legitimized his success.
Not that BA is the be all, end all, but none of these players were in the Det top 10 prospects. It seems like we would have gotten 1 solid hitting prospect instead of 3 so-so prospects. Tell us your secret here Jack!

I don't know about these players from Detroit
So I’m not sure which comments are sarcastic. Help!

20 year old in AA who "plays" 3B and can swing the stick a bit.
Detroits #4 prospect.

Why the quotation marks?
I thought the reports were pretty good on him at 3B?
That was my first glance because of a high number of errors, but more research and I realize I was being shortsighted.
Reports say he’s good. So thank gooodness.

#4 prospect in the Tigers system
20 year old 3B in AA
by seattlesundevil on Jul 30, 2011 8:31 AM PDT up reply actions
He's regressed compared to last year
But he’s still pretty young
This is my issue
Kind of a Carlos Triunfel type toolsy prospect who’s youngish but never really put it together. He’d be an interesting second piece in the deal. As a centerpiece, he’s disappointing.
It is a bit, depending on the new information that comes through...
but putting it all together at 20 anyway? It’s just that these guys get going when they’re 16 years old and so it feels like we’ve been waiting on them forever. I feel like Triunfel would be a first round pick in next years draft.

You're definitly right
Scouts seem to really like him. But that plate discipline at that age is disconcerting.
*breathes major sigh of relief if true*

He looks an awful lot like many of the guys we have already, though.
He doesn’t walk or get on base much and hasn’t hit for too much power. This makes the deal more interesting, certainly, but he looks awfully Triunfelish offensively.
At least he's doing it in AA at 20, rather than doing it in AAA at 24.
He seems a good deal better than when we acquired Johermyn Chavez for instance.

Triunfel is exactly who he looks like to me
Totally agree
Agreed that there's value
I think there’s value in Triunfel.
I just don’t know if its enough value to be the #1 player we’re getting back in the deal. Now, if the PTBNL really is interesting, I may change my mind about the trade. I’m thining/hoping it’s a 2010 draftee that can’t be dealt yet?
I don't know much about the Tigers' farm system
but I found this on the web about Martinez :
True five-tool talent with tremendous raw ability and quickly advancing baseball instincts. Has potential to be a smooth defender with a cannon arm, as well as a premium offensive player with power, patience, and speed

Per Stone:
Word is that besides Casper Wells, Charlie Furbush and 3B prospect Francisco Martinez, M’s will get player to be named…
…for Doug Fister and David Pauley. And it could be a pretty significant name.
God I hope it’s Jose Valverde!
Brennan Boesch!

When I first saw this morning as I was waking up and dusting my eyes off that Fister was traded.
My first thought was “Jacob Turner”?!?!?! “Nick Castellenos?”
Then the first names came through and I realized maybe I was being an idiot or a Fister bias, but then it seemed more like Jack was making a really strange deal….
Now I’ve remembered we shouldn’t judge a trade until its final.

I've put more thought into this and I'm turning a bit.
Wells looks like a decent acquisition in some ways. His defense is supposed to be solid, he hits for some power, and he could hit enough to be a league average outfielder or thereabouts. Furbush will help replace some of Fister’s production and will do so cheaply for a long time. Duane Below, well, who gives a shit. While I don’t generally believe in the player type Martinez appears to be, it’s something and it’s something with a little upside.
It’s not what I wanted out of the trade in terms of hopefully finding a long term talented outfield solution with more upside, but this is certainly not a disaster. Especially depending on the PTBNL. And while I’m not a big fan of taking concentrated value and spreading it out, this may do well enough to cover Fister and provide some future aid.
I don't know too much about the quality of Wells' defense, but maybe he can replace Gutierrez in centerfield?
Good stuff
Wells sounds better than I initially gave him credit for.
I’m coming around on this deal.
I think we got good value for Fister.
It’s always a gamble with young prospects, but finding a replacement for Fister shouldn’t be too difficult. His value came with his service time, not necessarily the talent he possesses.
Turns out that Doug Fister is a good pitcher and his value comes from being good at pitching and staying healthy in addition to service time.

People often overlook how hard it is to get dependable league-average innings on the open market.
Fister isn’t a star but, as far as pitching goes, he’s pretty damn valuable and not easily replaceable.
Fister isn't easily replaceable at his price, but his talent isn't anything extraordinary.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Fister’s talent, but I like that Jack Zduriencik is selling high on his value.
Furbush look like a solid piece
Haven’t found any scouting on him yet but he’s a lefty with a 91+ mph FB and very good K/BB numbers at all levels of the minors. Even his brief stint in the majors this year, while not entirely successful, was encouraging.
by Bearskin Rugburn on Jul 30, 2011 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions
I can't believe how fervently against this some people here are.
Fister is good and all, but we’re getting a pretty great return as far as I can tell. Wells might be our best OF right now, Furbush has upside, and “we already have guys like Martinez” is a terrible reason not to like a legit bat prospect.

Wells defense is the clincher for me
I didn’t realize he was such an asset defensive in the COF. That turned me around on the deal. I’m firmly in support now, even without an exciting PTBNL.
Anyone but Larry Stone saying anything about a fourth player?
Seems like maybe just the 3 (which wouldn’t be terrible, in my book).
You're forgetting we're giving up David Pauley, relief ace

Greg Johns:
Emotional Pauley says it’s hard leaving Mariners. Move will be official shortly. Fister, Pauley for Wells, Furbush, Martinez and PTBNL.
Pauley was a cool guy. Maybe we'll see him again as a Mariner. You never know.
Doug Fister is Dexter. R.I.P. Dave Niehaus
Pauley was fucking awesome.
Got his autograph at the game I went to when I was over, he spent quite a while signing, and had a word or two for the vast majority of the kids that he signed for.
