Tigers interested in Doug Fister
We know and have known that a number of teams are interested in Fister, so this isn't new, but given the rest of the pitching market we could legitimately see something happen here. (You like the self-link? I thought so.)

Brennan Boesch and Doug Fister have the same remaining amount of team control

The Tigers reportedly don't want to subtract from the big league roster anyway

hard to imagine what they'd get back. Boesch makes sense, as Jeff points out
but how can they afford to give him up at this stage?

No Boesch
He’s way too important to that lineup. But I think we’ll end up getting a really good hitting minor league prospect in exchange.
One really good hitting minor league prospect
Is not enough for Doug Fister’s better than AL average pitching with 4+ remaining years of club control.
we desperately need bats
and we’d end up getting 6 controlled years for a good hitting minor leaguer. Hopefully Nick Castellanos
Castellanos
looks great but if we need bats how long it will take to see him MLB rready ?
We can get equal or better value in the off season
If that is what is offered, it might pay to get more options later.
You're missing my point, but are correct in yours. The M's need bats, plural.
Giving up a young, cost controller, above average starter for a single prospect is folly. Especially one that is years away from MLB (and therefore higher risk).
The M’s need to be getting back something like an A, a B, and a couple C prospects to trade away Fister. A young, above average positition player would be different as then you’re looking at a like for like trade.
according to all the web sites
Castellanos is the best rated bat in all of their minor leagues. So even if they Tigers do that,(which might not happen) I’m not sure how much else they would have to offer. I mean, Safeco is where Great bats become good, and good bats become mediocre.
Just because he's their top position player, doesn't mean he's a great prospect
Castellanos is not in Law’s mid-season top 50. He was 75 coming into the season in Law’s top 100.
Sickels gave him a B ranking going into the season.
I don’t think you can afford to give up Fister for a single player who is by all accounts so far away. After 2009 Greg Halman (57 in baseball, top M’s prospect) and Michael Saunders (65th, 2nd on list) were both more highly regarded than Castellanos has ever been. In 2008 Jeff Clement was 48th nationally and the M’s top prospect. I could go on and on.
To put it bluntly, Fister for a single B prospect would be incredibly stupid and Z should be fired if he did it.
If
we can get another good player in the deal then great, but if we’re giving up Fister than I definitely want the package centered around their best hitting prospect.
Don't let reason get in the way of rosterbation.

The funny thing is he's doing it wrong
It should be Fister for Casellanos and Miguel Cabrera and two other prospects.
They could throw in Boesch too if they're serious about negotiating.

Boesch and Cabrera
would probably be enough, although they might need to include Victor Martinez to seal the deal
I hope we keep him.
Even after four years I still struggle with the whole players as commodities thing – it’s just so alien to sports in Australia.
Plus I identify with him a lot from my (cricket) playing days. I never had good stuff but I kept the ball in the right areas and would have had better results if my team wasn’t crap.
I'm with you.
I hate trade talk. I want to keep Bedard and Fister, resign Felix forever. I get way too attached to players.
Awesome. I guess that means we're definitely trading with the Pirates.
...and now I'm here
At the end probably GMZ
is going to suprise many
I think you mean the Nippon Ham Fighters.
How come you can do all this other great shit, but you can't lie the fuck down and sleep?
I wonder who has the higher trade value between Miguel Cabrera and Doug Fister.
My gut says Fister because he’s cheap for a while, but Cabrera’s so darn good.

The Detroit Tigers can fuck right off then.
Take Vargas or Bedard, but stay the hell away from Fister. I like him too much D:

Don't let him teach the Tigers how to Dougie!
We somehow ended up with the Nintendo Charter seats for Doug’s debut…wouldn’t have stayed around through Snell’s awful start had we not had a few extra beers. Doug was hyperventilating through his pitches, but ended up doing quite well. Since then, he’s become one of my favorite Mariners…
I would be sad to see Fister leave.
He’s my irrational favorite player. He embodied the Mariners. Bad luck, good skills. Can’t they take Vargas?
