OT July 26th Pac 12 Media Poll Edition

So today the first ever hot and sexy Pac 12 media poll is out:

North
1. Oregon (29)... 239
2. Stanford (13)... 220
3. Washington... 142
4. Oregon State... 120
5. California... 110
6. Washington State... 51

South
1. USC (24) ... 230
2. Arizona State (13)... 207
3. Utah (4)... 170
4. Arizona (1)... 140
5. UCLA ... 89
6. Colorado... 46

Despite being sanctioned, having lost more than 2 games in a season multiple years in a row, and having Lane Kiffin as their head coach, Pac 12 journalists still picked the Trojans as #1 in the South division. Lazy journalism or is the rest of the Pac 12 south just that weak?

What about the rest of the conference who is under rated? Who is over rated?

In non college football topics, summer is winding down, did you accomplish all your summer goals? Are there any last things you want to do this summer?

Today I overslept my alarm by 5 hours, and I'm not really sure how that happened. What's the worst you've over slept?

This is the first week of decent weather all summer so far in Portland, so it doesn't feel like summer is winding down

I have accomplished almost none of my summer goals due to the aforementioned bad weather, so August is going to be a busy month assuming it stays dry.

I can’t oversleep. I’m paranoid about oversleeping, so I can typically wake myself up before my alarm goes off because I’m afraid I will oversleep.

I had my first "summer is winding down" moment (as much as there is one here) a few days ago

when I asked my friend how his wife was doing and he said “oh well she’s getting ready to go back to school, the middle schools start in less than four weeks, you know”

Seeing as how the second best team in the Pac-12 South is basically usc but worse, I'd say the division is that bad

UCLA is probably underrated because eventually talent shines through over coaching (hi Rick Barnes!) and UCLA undeniably has talent on the roster.

Oregon’s offense is going to be terrifying. What do you mean Darron Thomas has now had a whole year to study the system!?

Regarding Oregon's offense.

It’d be nice for a receiver to finally amount to something (Maehl aside from last year).

But our running game will be insane. Lache, LaMichael, Barner, and whatever freshman may not be red-shirted. We may not need receivers!

I fucking hate you Mariners

by kentroyals5 on Jul 26, 2011 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions

The passing game is almost completely irrelenvant for them as long as they have at least one sprinter to keep defenses honest outside

because in the spread, it’s almost like the inside zone/read passes for your typical screens/slants that just keep the ball moving downfield and occasionally turn into a big play.

by seattlebruin on Jul 26, 2011 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

It'll be unorthodox, but David Paulson will probably end up carrying the passing game.

The more viable of a weapon he is, the farther back linebackers have to play to respect him, and the more space there is in the running game for LaMichael and Kenjon.

I donated blood today! For the first time in like 3 years.

I’m a little lightheaded and kinda spacey. Man, looking at the bulging bag of blood afterwards…that’s a lot of blood. I don’t do well with seeing blood.

Anybody donate blood frequently? How does it affect you? I think I might make a routine out of this.

by HititHere on Jul 26, 2011 2:25 PM PDT reply actions

It has not bothered me, so far.

It helps to drink large amounts of water before you donate, ask for a pillow to prop your head up if you are not in one of the places that has chairs, and definitely take advantage of the snack center— juice, water and a cookie or two. Treat yourself to something sustaining in the evening — steak and Guinness, perhaps!

oh, and don’t look at the blood if you are bothered by the idea of your blood :)

by msb on Jul 26, 2011 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Lesson learned. Anytime I need to get stuck with a needle, I don't look because it makes me a little woozy

But I didn’t think to avoid looking at the huge, bulging bag of my innards afterwards. That’s probably what has made me a little lightheaded, more so than the actual blood loss.

At least I feel like I’m doing something good for the world, and have an excuse to drink a Guinness later!

by HititHere on Jul 26, 2011 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Having just given blood, a few more thoughts.

PSBC now has an electronic questionnaire, so you use a stylus to answer the questions about where your blood has been; they will then take your temp, BP (free blood pressure reading!), a small and painless fingerprick of your blood and then have you donate.

I say again, drinking a lot of water beforehand makes the donation go much faster.

by msb on Aug 1, 2011 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions

Gonna hit up the blood bank tomorrow.

Last time I did, it was during high school. We used to donate, then spend the rest of the day pounding beers in the parking lot because it allegedly got us drunk quicker. Not really sure if that was true or not.

by mkries on Jul 26, 2011 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I have heard people say that too

Things like “I was wasted on 3 beers and then sober half an hour later!”

It’s probably mostly in your mind. Although, I guess the alcohol might not be AS diluted as normal since the same amount of liquor is spread through a smaller amount of blood…

I only did it once five years ago, but it was a fairly negative experience.

I didn’t pass out but just felt very faint and fatigued the rest of the day. However this was probably because I was a tiny 16 year old girl who barely weighed 110 pounds. I really should give it a try again.

You! Cake or death?

I am not 16 and weight significantly more than 110

But was still pretty loopy for most of the day. In fact, I feel a little under the weather today still. And very, very parched, I swear I’ve drank a gallon of water.

Overall though, it really wasn’t bad and I feel good that I might be saving lives. I’ll try it again in a few months, though I might not do it in the middle of a work day.

by HititHere on Jul 27, 2011 9:59 AM PDT up reply actions

I had to cut down my schedule to once every six months because my new place is a ways away from the nearest center.

But I’m basically built to give blood. I’m Type O (positive, unfortunately), don’t mind needles, am a really big guy (height and weight), have perfect blood pressure, and always eat lots of iron-rich foods. I don’t even get the two-beer drunk that most people seem to get.

I miss going every three months to give my two units, but six isn’t so bad.

Just so you guys know, there are those of us that make up for the ones that can’t do it.

Thanks! If I ever need blood, I will think of you.

Why is it unfortunate that you’re O+? Because O- is a universal donor and O+ isn’t? I thought O+ could still be accepted by just about everyone except O-. I’m no expert though.

I am O+ also, and know a few people now who have needed transfusions so I figure donating occasionally is the least I can do, even if it affects me a bit.

OT Re-post

Still looking for comments on compact digital cameras from anyone in the know.

I’ve been wanting to upgrade my travel camera for a while now. I prefer small and pocket sized because the power of a dSLR is lost on my photographing ability. I’ve been using a Canon SD700IS for about five years now and have been fine with it, but I think it’s getting a little dated and doesn’t take as clear or as vivid of shots that I’d ideally like to get. So…

is it worth an upgrade? Will the new line provide enough performance increase to justify the price?

What are some good ones to look at? Doing some poking around, the Lumix LX5, Canon S90/5 and Olympus XZ-1 all seem in the mold that I prefer.

I can now recommend installing the CHDK on any Canon camera if you’re a tech fiddly sort of person. I’ve already got scripts set up that can do bracketing for HDR, time lapse, even motion detection! And getting to fiddle with stuff like shots at 1/20000 shutter speed is fun

by Matthew on Jul 26, 2011 2:52 PM PDT reply actions

Further added-on,

now that I’m gaining proficiency with the CHDK, I’m looking more for a companion camera than a replacement for my SD700, so I might be more open to looking outside just the compact digital realm if someone can convince me it’s worth the price.

by Matthew on Jul 26, 2011 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

As a guy that uses a lot of photo gear, it confuses me to hear someone talk about a companion to a P&S camera. That would be the backup to my DSLR.

Honestly, unless you want to spend some money on a good wideangle, fisheye, superzoom, night lens, etc, it’s all pretty much software. The only thing a DSLR body will give you is much better battery life and 4-7 fps, and external flashes if you want to get artsy. That’s nice, don’t get me wrong, but if you like your portability, most of the functionality is already in your hands.

If you’re looking to do some specialized pictures, like night shots or macro, a lot of that is built into the CHDK. If you’re looking for functionality that isn’t offered by your current setup, you’d be talking about multiple-frame shooting for DSLRs (which run expensive for a body and lenses that will get you good results), or maybe a high-speed Casio (like Brian has been known to play with).

If not those scenarios, maybe look at getting a Canon with better optical zoom that you can drop CHDK on and use the SD700 as a backup? You should be able to find a much cheaper CHDK-capable SX110IS now that it’s a couple models older, and spend the rest on a nice travel tripod and a trip to somewhere you can use it.

Any thoughts on some of the new Fuji FinePix models?

Like the T300 or something? I’ve not seen them/used them myself, but I liked the features on an older model well enough to get it as a gift for my dad. It was fairly powerful, but I’m so used to DSLRs that I just can’t get over the delay on point-and-shoots. I’m sure this issue’s been addressed, but I’m not sure to what degree (or to what degree the lag is an issue for Matthew).

by marc w on Jul 26, 2011 11:00 PM PDT up reply actions

For the price they're a good pick, and I've never heard of any major warranty actions so they can't be too bad in quality.

I’ve had problems recommending them in the past because they just don’t have the features of the comparables, but if you’re looking for a budget camera it’s not a bad choice by any means.

For just a few bucks more you can get a SX130IS that is better in every way, and a few bucks over that get a Nikon L120 that has one of the best zoom lenses and smallest lag times of any P&S, at least until the P500 came out at twice the price.

Or even for about the same price you can get an Olympus Tough 6020, which has a smaller lens but is completely waterproof and shock resistant, and any Olympus has the similar Fuji beat in lag time by a third.

Finally the T series in my opinion just doesn’t stack up to the S series, unless size is your main concern. The S2950 is around the same price now but has much more in the way of features, a nice grip that fit my hand better than my D40x (may it rest in peace), and a zoom that works pretty well as long as you have some sunlight. It’s more like the poor man’s Nikon L-series than anything, but it’s got a great price point.

by Faux on Jul 27, 2011 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions

I'd argue that there are plenty of other significant advantages of SLRs.

Off the top of the head: low-light shooting, much larger image sensor leading to increased photo quality, faster and more accurate autofocus, no delay in shooting, ability to manual focus, etc.

by redwolf75 on Jul 27, 2011 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

First is only better on a SLR with a decent lens. I have yet to find a kit lens that will give you much better low-light shooting than a higher-end P&S.

The second is true, but in the world of 12-14MP cameras and advanced image processors not as much of a gap as it used to be.
Most P&S have such short lens throw that speed is no longer an issue, and most kit lenses have trouble focusing accurately anyways.
CHDK partially fixes the fourth and completely fixes the fifth.

The technology has come close enough together that the advantages of SLRs aren’t as heavy as they once were, while the spread in price has largely stayed the same if you want the features you mention, because you need a decent lens to fully take advantage of them. The only thing that I’ve found is an absolute line is the fact that you can’t get full quality and over 4 fps from anything smaller than a D60/T3i equivalent.

by Faux on Jul 27, 2011 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

For low-light shooting, I'd be less concerned about the lens and more concerned about the sensor.

Do modern P&S cameras have sensors that can deal with low-light and long-exposure situations without a crippling amount of noise? (honest question – I don’t have a modern P&S)

by Chris Hafner on Jul 27, 2011 6:58 PM PDT up reply actions

A lot better than they used to.

I can’t find it now, but friend of mine sent me a set he took – overnight shots of London, taken with a Nikon S-something-or-other from a model ago. They spanned the gamut of long-exposure to intentional blur, and he said the only thing he used was a gorillapod.

One point does not a trend make, but that really opened my eyes and I went out a tried a few P&Ss and played around with them, and found that it’s not as bad as it was even four or five models ago.

by Faux on Jul 27, 2011 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

CHDK sounds amazing and makes me want to replace my ancient Kodak P&S with a modern-ish Canon.

As much as I love the power and flexibility of shooting with an SLR, I don’t always want to deal with the bulk and burden and don’t always have it with me when a great photo op presents itself. Having a P&S that can approximate at least some of the flexibility would be fantastic.

Question, possibly building on Faux’s comment – if you’re looking for a companion camera to the SD700, what would you be looking to do with that camera?

by Chris Hafner on Jul 27, 2011 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

To address both of you,

I’m not sure. I’m not going to go hog wild and start buying lens, flashes, etc. Mainly I’m just wondering if it’s at all worth an upgrade from a CHDK-powered P&S to another P&S. My SD700 has a 4x optical so it’s not like I’d be getting much higher than that and I already have a ~7-year old Olympus with a 10x optical if need be.

I hadn’t known such a firmware hack existed so a large part of my motivation to upgrading to something like the s90 was improved control over some of the settings just so I could play around and learn-by-trail some photography concepts. Now I have that already and I’m left thinking that the hardware only doesn’t seem worth dropping $400 on.

by Matthew on Jul 28, 2011 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions

My recommendation:

I wouldn’t buy anything until you’ve had a chance to bump up against the limitations of your current setup (now that it’s been changed with CHDK) and identified what shortcomings annoy you the most. It’s so easy to get seduced by the wealth of features on a specification sheet, but most people have a limited set of subjects they shoot and conditions in which they shoot them and so in practice their needs are much more specific. Also, in most cases (definitely including mine) the user is the limitation, not the equipment.

I’d definitely wait until your frustration with your current kit has grown to an unbearable level and has helped give you a very specific wish list for what you want. And if your current kit doesn’t frustrate you, so much the better.

by Chris Hafner on Jul 28, 2011 10:00 AM PDT up reply actions

It gets to the point where you're so comfortable with DSLR's you can't go back.

So I will always recommend a DSLR because I hate using point and shoots. But I would go with the Lumix that you listed above.

by Scruffy Lefty on Jul 28, 2011 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't imagine going back to a point-and-shoot after buying my T2i.

And the nice thing is that you really don’t have to go lens crazy to get great photos from a DSLR. The stock lens and, if you’re looking for a bit more, a $100 Canon Nifty Fifty will do just about everything you need.

I hope the Pac-12 doesn't become what the Big 12 was, where the talent gap between divisions was ridiculous.

In terms of long-term viability though, I think they have the divisions correct. UCLA and USC are classic programs and will be successful in the future, as will Oregon and Cal. I think Utah is the real wild card here — if they are as good as they have been, these divisions will be pretty imbalanced.

So, how many wins will Cal get this year before their annual 6-game losing streak?

While I know we are bad, I think we could still “surprise” some people and be a bit underrated. And we better be since this is probably the real “do or die” year for Wulff.

Jeff Tuel is the best QB in the conference that nobody talks about. If he was on literally any other team, he’d be getting some first-team All-Pac-12 love. I think with an improved o-line, a great WR corps, and god-help-us some Defense, we could win 1 or 2 more Pac-12 games than expected. So we’re underrated in the fact that we’re the consensus worst team, and I think we’ll be slightly better than that.

“Having been the beneficiary of calls like this and having been on the other end in my experience as a player and as a manager, I have felt that this has always been a part of our game. As a member of the Commissioner’s Special Committee for On-Field Matters, I have heard many discussions on umpiring and technology over the past two years, including both the pros and the cons of expanding replay. However, most in the game recognize that the human element always will be part of baseball and instant replay can never replace all judgment calls by umpires. Obviously, a play like this is going to spark a lot of conversation, and we will continue to consider all viewpoints in our ongoing discussions regarding officiating in baseball.

“We expect the best from our umpires, and an umpire would tell you he expects the best of himself. We have to continue to strive for accuracy, consistency and professionalism day in and day out.”

Tech heLLp needed!

We have a wireless network in our house, that has been up and running for about two years now. That network has three things that run off it – a laptop, appleTV, and a Netflix-streaming DVD player. The network is WPA2-secured and password-protected (with my own strong password, not the default password), and always has been.

In the last two weeks or so, the network’s performance has degraded noticeably – we use appleTV to stream music into the bedroom, and the network connection drops at least once a day, and the laptop’s connection is spotty at best.

Given that nothing has changed with my setup in several months that I know of, what could be causing this? Did someone hack my wireless password – and if so, how would I know? Is it a simple matter of boosting the signal – how could I do that? Anything else that might be causing this?

by pdb on Jul 28, 2011 9:34 AM PDT reply actions

What provider do you have?

My Comcast service degraded considerably when someone physically broke into the cable box on the street, installed a splitter and started stealing our internet/cable.

by HititHere on Jul 28, 2011 10:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Comcast.

How did you know someone broke into the box? Did you call Comcast?

by pdb on Jul 28, 2011 10:15 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, I called Comcast 3 times

The first two, they reset our connection and said nothing was wrong. The third time, they got frustrated and said they would have someone come take a look but they were SURE it was just the way we had our wireless connection set up and we’d have to pay whatever ridiculous fee to have someone come check it out.

It took the tech about 5 minutes to figure out someone had broken into the box, then he fixed it, locked it, and didn’t charge us anything. Getting Customer Service to help us was a pain at first, though.

by HititHere on Jul 28, 2011 10:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Your symptoms sound exactly like mine, but granted, those are pretty generic "crappy service" symptoms

It’s probably worth calling Comcast, at least. I can’t imagine anyone would’ve hacked your wireless password, though I’m pretty sure there’s a place you can check and see who is currently connected to your service… I gotta remember where that is, though…

by HititHere on Jul 28, 2011 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions

My ideas

1) Router is going bad. (power supply usually)

2) Unknown wireless interference

3) Hacked.

What brand of router do you have? You can log into it thru a web browser and check your clients table. This lists all of the clients connected to your router (sometimes showing the clients connected in the last X hours too). If you know the MAC addresses of the devices you use in the house, you can cross check them and see if any aren’t yours. In that case, change your security settings. This tab is usually in the local network or LAN settings tabs.

by d0nkey on Jul 28, 2011 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

It's a Netgear router

and as above I checked and only the devices I would expect are connected.

by pdb on Jul 28, 2011 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Nope!

How would I go about doing that?

by pdb on Jul 28, 2011 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Click on the wireless tab in the settings screen and you should be able to choose between some.

Most likely it is set to Auto and it will usually give you a few to choose from. Try one at the top and bottom of the spectrum if you don’t get any different results.

by d0nkey on Jul 28, 2011 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn't be surprised about the power thing.

Same thing happened to me about a year back, and comcast replaced the router and it worked fine.

by joof on Jul 28, 2011 12:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm going to piggyback on this thread because the issue is starting to irk me

Lately I’ve been having a lot of sporadic bad DNS lookups with my connection. Anything that uses a fixed IP address seems fine, or anything that’s already been looked up or connected (games, streaming video/movies, etc), but browsing webpages will periodically fail to connect for 30 seconds and come back with DNS lookup failures. I’m using a netgear wireless dual band n router, but my housemate’s computer is hardlined in to it and he also has the same issue. We’ve tried resetting both the cable modem and the router, but the issue just comes back. Any thoughts?

by Drew_D on Jul 28, 2011 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I might ask your provider

Have you actually checked the settings on the router? I can’t possibly imagine that they were flashed different than stock, so it should be set to obtain DNS servers automatically since you have reset it, but just in case you might take a peek.

My guess is your provider will say they don’t see a problem when they do, then they’ll fix it when they get around to it.

by d0nkey on Jul 28, 2011 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions

We have been having this same problem at work since we changed to a T1 from Qwest 128 ISDN.

It’s so bad that I often have to refresh 4 or 5 times for a page to come up. Of course when they talked to Integra about the problem the customer service rep couldn’t see a problem and told us it was our network.

by ToddK on Jul 29, 2011 8:20 AM PDT up reply actions

All the suggestions in this thread are good.

Another suggestion is to change the default subnet your router uses (and if you can change it from a /24 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0) to something else, even better), hardset your IP addresses on all your devices, and disable DHCP. You can disable SSID broadcast as well, but that can make it harder to connect new devices to the network.

Related to camera stuff above, online photo storage!

My flickr pro account is up in a couple weeks as I seem to do each of the previous three times, I’m looking around for a better option. No, I will not store photos on facebook. I’ve been trying Picasa the last day or so and while I really like the desktop tool and the cost (I have about 6GB of photos and $5/year for 20GB beats the crap out of Flickr’s $25/year), picasa seems to have a shitty way of actually displaying photos on the web.

Several of my shots are large size (say 2816×2112 pixels) and yet they only seem to display up to 800×600. This (http://bit.ly/oAEYVo) for example, I cannot find any way to display at full resolution. Is this a picasa thing? Any there any other recommended services? No! I will NOT use facebook.

Self-update to kibitzers

Digging around, for storing and sharing (but not downloading), shutterfly seems like an option as it offers free unlimited storage of full resolution. Not sure how well it handles sync’ing though.

Also Windows SkyDrive has 25GB of free storage and has some photo sharing capability, but seems to lack a desktop tool aside from Windows Live Mesh (which limits to 5GB of sync’ing)

by Matthew on Jul 28, 2011 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions

It wouldn't cost me really any time to move over.

I use an external HD as my actual photo storage and keep my flickr account synced to that to use as online backup. So switching to something like picasa would involve me doing about 5 minutes of work, once. And I guess the pic size thing isn’t a deal buster for me since I don’t really share my photos online. It’s more of a “has anyone else seen this and if so, am I just missing something stupid?” question.

by Matthew on Jul 28, 2011 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't care one way or another. It's not what I'd use it for.

My use case is that I store, edit, print, etc offline. I want something online to act as a cloud backup and to be able to share with people on occasion. The sticking point is that I make lots of edits and I want my online backup to reflect those changes without a lot of hassle on my part.

My current set up is to use FlickrSync which pushes adds/deletes/updates to Flickr and it works fine enough. I’d prefer something with a more robust offline organization tool though which is why I’d like to get Picasa to work, but obviously Google has no interest in setting up Picasa to sync with anything other than their own service.

It's the way I'm leaning. I'm intrigued with the idea of building my own software,

by seattlebruin on Jul 28, 2011 10:16 AM PDT reply actions

by pdb on Jul 28, 2011 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree.

Spend more time convincing your boss that you are performing at a very high level. If you are successful at that and if your boss has 1/2 a brain, your boss will stop the complaints directly and/or ignore whoever is complaining.

A similar thing happened to me at my current job within the first year or so I started. I showed my boss what I was doing, performed consistently at a high level, and have received a few raises and bonuses. If other co-workers are complaining about what I do, I don’t hear about it any more.

by Chris Hafner on Jul 28, 2011 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

HDR is a wonderfully useful tool that can be misused to create horrible abominations.

Some people like the huge HDR halos, oversaturation, and relative lack of contrast – I know I did at one point – but it’s just so much more rewarding to get a realistic-looking photo. My problem is that my old dSLR doesn’t have much dynamic range at all, so unless the lighting across the frame is incredibly consistent I find myself needing to do something. I don’t live up to the methods described here, since I still use HDR and tone-mapping, but I definitely agree with the sentiment and try to use the technique with an incredibly light hand.

by Chris Hafner on Jul 28, 2011 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed on both points - shots like that almost work better as art than as photographs.

The composition is cool, and the cloud treatment and darkness compared to the lightness and saturation of the buildings gives the whole thing a spooky and unrealistic look. Even still, though, it’s hard for me to see the picture through the HDR – the dark treatment given the clouds smudges the tops of the buildings and is distracting.

It’s way better than a just gray, no-contrast HDR image or a wildly oversaturated one with huge haloes, but ultimately my tastes run to pictures that let natural lighting and sensible saturation do the work.

I'd love to see a thoughtful, contemplative and touching American Pie movie, reflecting the cast's increasing maturity and life learning.

Jason Biggs has grown into himself and is quietly competent at his job but is deals with the quiet regrets of lost opportunities. Yes, he’s happy … but is he satisfied? Stiffler is now a heavily bittersweet character, having fallen deeply in love with a woman who was subsequently blinded by severe diabetes. He also suffered a heartbreaking loss when his mother passed away, but has dealt with this by replacing his brash sensibility with a quiet sense of humor and grace. His tragedy has been offset with the gaining of wisdom. Nadia is the happiest of the group – she married an insurance salesman, gained 50 pounds and is leader of her neighborhood book club.

josabank.com. I love their shirts, but can’t usually afford them – but at buy 1 get 2 free, it makes three shirts from them dirt frickin’ cheap.

The quality is great. Their non-sale prices are pretty steep though.

Usually when they have their buy-1 get-2 suits free sale, you sometimes spend $750+ on one suit. But, if you go in on it with two friends, you each get a suit for $250 so it’s still a pretty good deal.

I think people think "Klinsmann will singlehandedly save US Soccer and make them into a powerhouse that makes Brazil look like the Faroe Islands"

I don’t share that – I just think Klinsmann brings a lot to the table as far as training methodologies and techniques that the US hasn’t seen before, and that can’t help but help.

by pdb on Jul 29, 2011 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions

Can you point to one person hinting at something like the quote above?

I just don’t believe that anyone, anywhere, whether they’re 6 years old, or if they’re directly related to Klinsmann and/or Landycakes, thinks that.

The second sentence is fine. I think Klinsmann may be able to get more out of the meager talent the US has, and that’s all most people want. Bradley wasn’t completely terrible, but he had a spotty record at getting the most out of players (Landon being the exception). Pace the article EK linked, I think Klinsmann’s job in 2006 was pretty exceptional in that regard, and his pick of Low seems inspired now. We’ll see.

by marc w on Jul 29, 2011 11:15 AM PDT up reply actions

I've heard different things from other scouts

they think Considerations is a pretty useful guy as a career minor league filler, since he has a lot of versatility and can be used any way the org sees fit. Puhtibnil on the other hand doesn’t have nearly as much flexibility, but might actually be able to contribute at the big league level someday

by seattlebruin on Jul 29, 2011 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Cash considerations is a career minor leaguer. Don't see him ever breaking a big league roster.

I’ve seen him floating around the middle to upper levels of the minor league for ages now, to the extent where every time I see the name pop up, I think “wow, he’s still around?” The only explanation I have is that it’s the kind of skillset that seems to age really well. I’m starting to think he could play forever.

I disagree. He didn't get a lot of publicity

but a lot of people credit Cash Considerations for being the glue guy for the Yankees run as well as the Red Sox championship teams. You can’t exactly say what he brings to the table, but some people swear you can’t win without him. Sort of like Luis Sojo, only more versatile.

Even so, plenty of teams have had success without him on the roster.

Awesome.

If you can stand hipsters, Dolores Park is really nice and there are excellent food options around there. Bi-Rite Creamery (ice cream) is apparently delicious; though I’ve never been there are always at least 30 people waiting in line well into the night.

There’s also a lot of fine places around the Castro Theatre. The only problem is that there aren’t many busy places like the ones I mentioned above within walking distance of Upper Market/Twin Peaks. That being said, you’re in a pretty nice neighborhood, and I’m sure you’ll find some local hangouts.

Another plus is you’ll get to (presumably) take the light rail to work, which eliminates a lot of the crazies if you take buses through Market. They like to hop on the back of the bus, and it’s much harder to fare evade on light rails.

Agreed, and I am astounded more people don't use it.

I grew up in Burien, and even when working 9-5 downtown, I’d use 509/99 and there was virtually no traffic, ever, until partway over the viaduct.

It still boggles me that I could take a freeway parallel to I-5 in the heart of rush hour, and there would be hardly any congestion.

I don't think I ever used I-5 again from downtown/the stadiums once I figured out that 99/509 and 99/599 exist

I took Marginal Way/International Blvd up from the airport yesterday while I-5 was clogged and there was no traffic. No traffic! Mind boggling.

I blame GPS and laziness.

“Mike talked about the reaction in Seattle to the Erik Bedard trade, why it was fantastic news that Seattle traded the lefty, how he doesn’t think Bedard really likes baseball that much, that there was a belief Bedard tanked his final start with the Mariners on purpose, what type of pitcher the Red Sox are getting, why he thinks we really won’t like Bedard and that Bedard is even worse than John Lackey in terms of body language.”

It's all about the narrative.

From the beginning in his Seattle stay, there has been a narrative that Bedard is selfish, fragile, and kind of a dick. It’s obvious to the unbiased observer that he’s none of those things, but apparently Salk and others have every interest in rationalizing every event to try to fit that narrative, no matter how much of a stretch that is.

The sad thing is that people casually scanning for Seattle reaction to the trade will read Baker and see this from Salk and assume that Bedard wasn’t liked here and that we’re relieved he’s gone, when the exact opposite is true.

by Chris Hafner on Aug 1, 2011 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, this is really disappointing.

I had always heard that Salk was one of the more fair-minded and progressive talk radio guys out there, so this and his overreaction when Ichiro dropped the ball earlier this year are really disappointing.

He calls Bedard a curse! Yep, Salk is from Boston.

“The teammates all seem to really like him and defend him, so I’m not sure what that tells me.”
“Literally, I was shocked that he came off the DL.” NOT ENOUGH VOLTAGE.
“All I’m going to tell you is this: you guys are really not going to like him.”
“He’s so worse than Lackey.” (speaking about his body language, but still.)

I think less left-handed, at least that's what the minor league numbers tell me.

Everyone knows that the more left-handed you are, there reaches a point where you actually lose your advantage over left-handed bats because of over-reliance on a change-up. Vargas does worse against left-handers. Vasquez is better against them at the moment. For these reasons, I believe that there’s a gap between Vasquez’ perceived left-handedness and his actual left-handedness.

The part that confuses me about this story

is that the FBI has the serial numbers on the bills used in the ransom, so after this long, wouldn’t at least ONE of those bills show up on the grid by now?

I mean, he could’ve survived I suppose and just not spent any of the money he worked so hard to get but I doubt it.

by d0nkey on Aug 1, 2011 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Right, I understand they found a roll of bills. But my point is, if he survived and made it back into society

surely at least one of the bills would have turned up in circulation right? I suppose he could have fled to Mexico or something and used them there, but even then, I would think at least one of the bills would have made it back to the states by now.

It is frightfully easy to launder money if you're well connected

I have no idea if he was/is, but if your intent is to turn a big pile of bills of known provenance into a lot of smaller piles of lovely anonymous bills it’s not that hard to do. And from the sounds of this guy, he was extremeny well prepared, so I wouldn’t be surprised if had a way to launder the money all figured out prior to the hijack.

They weren’t quite sure if he had the glove for third base, but his development was all screwed up too. He jumped directly from the VSL to the California League. Pineda, who we all know, only jumped from the DSL to the Midwest League. So Guzman got there and held his own to such a degree that there was no reason to demote him, but they didn’t seem to realize that other aspects of his game stalled from having to handle too much at once.

I’ve done the “911” wings at Cluck-U, and that was slightly a mistake, as the things tasted horrible at first. But once the heat hits you can’t taste anything anyways so it doesn’t matter.

I actually make a really hot (but really good) Honey BBQ sauce that I usually pair with grilled chicken. I’ve yet to have anyone else take more than one bite of it, even people that say they can handle heat.

Then again, I usually ask for at least 7s on the “authentic” scale when I go anywhere with hot asian foods. It helps that I go to the same three spots.

I shut him up by gargling two shots of the hot straight and a couple of squirts of whatever “hot” sauce they had there, then going back to eating without breaking a sweat.

Good point.

Who do we have on the roster right now that can pass as a CF and give him a day off?

I think at the moment, they'd be banking on Casper Wells to do it.

If you're not listening to Marc Maron's WTF podcast, what's wrong with you?

Do you like funny people? Do you like interesting conversations? If so, you really should start listening to WTF. I’ve been listening to it for a few months now, and it’s awesome. For a jumping-off point, start listening with this episode – the conversations with Tom Scharpling (and Ted Leo!) and Wyatt Cenac are wet-your-pants funny, and the rest of it is great too.

This is seriously good stuff. Check it out.

It’s been asked before, but not recently – what are some of your favorite podcasts?

by pdb on Aug 4, 2011 3:12 PM PDT reply actions

I've been busy listening to the Smodcast network podcasts, specifically Smodcast, Jay and Silent Bob Get Old, and Hollywood Babble-On.

www.Smodcast.com for those interested.

This is a podcast network started by Kevin Smith, so that kind of gives you an idea what it’s like. They also have an internet radio station, which is pretty neat, where they stream live shows and during down time plays archived shows.

Fair warning, the language is quite salty for those that are turned off by that sort of thing.

I've recently been gorging myself on Doug Loves Movies.

It’s wonderful how comedians apparently can succeed off podcasting. It also shows how lame most radio DJs are.
As for other podcasts, This American Life, Radio Lab, Planet Money, The Moth and The Sound of Young America are great. You can also get Arlo White’s game calls for most Sounders game as a podcast now, which is neat if you happen to be watching a different feed.

My favorite podcast (the only one I ever listen to) is the Formula One Rejects podcast.

It’s a couple of F1 fans from Australia who celebrate the backmarkers of Formula One (and have a pretty cool website dedicated to the less successful drivers of the sport). It’s just full of ridiculous jokes and general mockery of everything conventional about Formula One, all the while adding good insight on the sport both on and off the racetrack.

For some reason, Austrailian podcasts always crack me up.

How come you can do all this other great shit, but you can't lie the fuck down and sleep?

I've been binging on Sklarbro Country.

I don’t really care for what little I’ve seen of the Sklar Brothers’ stand-up comedy, but their podcast is frequently interesting, and their guests are quite good. Their humor seems to work much better in that format, as well.

I just worked through the back catalog and have been struggling to find another podcast I really like (outside of This American Life, which is always excellent, and the How Stuff Works podcasts, which are usually interesting). I really expected to like Doug Loves Movies, Paul F. Tomcast, and The Nerdist, but I’ve listened to multiple episodes of each of those and have come away annoyed.

I'm the same way with the Paul F Tomcast

I like Paul F Tompkins OK, but he’s incredibly precious and his schtick wears really thin really fast for me.

That's really weird. I JUST downloaded the WTF with Marc Maron application for android before I came to the OT today.

I have heard about the podcast for a long time, but my recent foray into an obsession with comics and stand-up made me realize I was way late on the bandwagon and needed to start listening asap.

I haven’t listened to any other podcast in my life really except for Stuff You Should Know, the greatest podcast of all-time. (Sample size: 1 podcast) But Stuff you should know is amazing.

Speaking of comedy:

The best part about living in LA is that every night you can find a free (yes FREE show) with some of the worlds best stand-ups. Wednesday I went to a free show and saw Sarah Silverman and Aziz Ansari, among others.

At risk of sounding like an AK1984 apologist, I find this to be unnecessary.

Can we let bygones be bygones? The infamous AK thread was 3 years ago. I believe community policing is intended to help LL members improve their comments, not discourage them from being here. Obviously there are exceptions for trolls, spammers and whoever decides to really piss off J/M/G (which is a category AK may have fallen into), but if it’s true that he lurks LL to this day and doesn’t post anymore, then he/she is likely interested in Sabermetrics, is a Mariners fan, and is here to learn from a lot of good material so he shouldn’t be discouraged from doing so.

This should be true for anyone. There was another infamous name from a few years back, ASUBoyd, who was later made fun of again in a subthread sometime later under the assumption that he was gone for good. Then he showed up in the subthread, was even a good sport about it (which I personally found impressive and beyond necessary for him), and all was forgiven.

I see this is piling on, which Jeff and Matthew have really been fighting against for the past couple years, and their continued efforts have really improved the community.

Key distinction. I didn't actually make fun of him in any fashion.

It’s interesting to see that he’s still around sbn after being absent from his main stomping grounds for so long, which is why I provided the link. I don’t see how linking to his profile serves as “piling on.” If anything, I’m sure being mentioned strokes his ego.

by redwolf75 on Aug 5, 2011 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm reading between the lines,

which is often shaky ground, but given the connotation of his name in this community I think my comment is relevant.

To clarify, that post wasn’t so much about pointing and wagging my finger at you, redwolf, but more promoting the kinder, more welcoming LL. I’m saying that if anyone who has made a big mistake in their past adjusts their abrasive tendencies like the community guides them, then they should be encouraged. Lurking is one way to do that, and if he is, then we need to stop name-dropping him unless we provide an acceptable context, such as this one:

It’s interesting to see that he’s still around sbn after being absent from his main stomping grounds for so long, which is why I provided the link.

This, however…

If anything, I’m sure being mentioned strokes his ego.

Then again, I think standards were far lower and less likely to be enforced “back in the day.”

If anything, I’m sure being mentioned strokes his ego.

I’m just pointing out the fact that merely namedropping someone cannot go far in the “discouragement” territory. I think that’s fair.

So today I finally got around to getting on my bike for the 7 miles to my work.

Why the hell didn’t I do this last year when I first thought about it, or every other time I’ve decided that it was a good idea?

Anyone else put things off that turn out to be much easier than you had thought?

Buying a road bike, coincidentally

I used a modified mountain bike (slick tires, road-friendly gears) for about 6 years as my regular commuter bike, then one day I thought “I should get a road bike”. I spent the whole ride home on my new road bike mad at myself for not buying it sooner – it’s so much easier to go fast on a road bike!

by pdb on Aug 5, 2011 6:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm still on my (down to 50lb) downhill bike for the ride in, and I have a feeling upgrading my hardtail and using that will make the hills that much easier.

The addition of having gears, the halving of weight, and the lack of soft shocks front and back will probably bring me up to over 10MPH from the ~8 of this morning.

However, I’m not sure if I’m skinny enough to contemplate getting a road bike yet. I’m still a fat guy on a bike, but at least it’s a beefy looking bike. Maybe when I get below 300lb from my current over 350lb.

by Faux on Aug 5, 2011 7:06 AM PDT up reply actions

It's a good goal to set for yourself, that's for sure

And yeah, just having a hardtail alone will make the ride easier – you’re not wasting vertical energy on each pedal stroke with a hardtail.

I thought it was earlier in the season, but yeah.

Despite 116 wins, because we didn’t make the WS that is the game of the year I will most remember.

It's amazing how much I let that game damage my pysche.

Growing up, I came to believe the saying that “no lead is safe” because the Mariners had such unreliable pitching for so long despite having great offensive numbers from the mid-90s onward. Even in the midst of such an incredible season, it was still like “YUP, that’s the same ol’ Mariners. Always blowing leads” and it planted this incredible seed of doubt that despite all the wins, something was going to go wrong in the playoffs because that’s what always happened before.

Fucking superstition.
