Felix to miss All-Star game?
Passan speculates that Felix won't be invited to the allstar game and that Pineda will instead represent the Mariners. What do you think, will they snub the current Cy Young award winner in favor of Pineda?
Also, somewhat related it looks like Ichiro's streak of All-Star appearances will end.

Does Felix deserve to go in? There have been some pretty strong SP in the AL this season after all.
Personally I think Pauley deserves a shot.
Yes.
5th highest WAR amongst AL starters. 5th highest FIP amongst AL starters. Felix gets in before Pineda.

3rd in FIP per FG
and tied for fourth in xFIP, with David Price.

Corrected...
for some reason, no matter what I do, when I sort by FIP, Verlander and Sabathia both end ranking higher, even though Felix’s is obviously better.
Either way… reigning Cy Young award winner having a great season. He has to go. I’m sure Verlander would get the start at this point because of the no-no, but if Felix had a couple great starts leading up to the game, it would be a great discussion.

didn't realize that.
Also, the then-reigning AL Cy Young winner, Zack Greinke, was not invited either (although, IIRC, his 2010 season was worse than Felix’ 2011).
Wikipedia on 2010 All Star Game
Felix has only been an All-star once.
I laughed heartily while I read Passan’s article. They have a players and managers voting, and since “this game counts” there’s no way he’s not picking up a lot of those votes. The Manager also has to see him a lot and probably doesn’t want to give him extra incentive to kick his ass, in what’s looking like a competitive race. All of those signs point to Felix getting there comfortably.
The ridiculous part of his list is he took 6 relievers from the NL and 5 from the AL, including Kyle Farnsworth, Jose Valverde and Chris Perez, but NOT Jordan Walden. There’s your spot for Felix AND Dan Haren right there, though the Angels probably only deserve the 1 player anyway.
As far as his NL team goes, he didn’t take nearly enough position players. He took only 3 1Bs and 6 OFs. He’s forgetting that one of those guys has to start at DH. Unless he’s going to have that DH play the whole game, he’ll need one to replace them, and unless he’s going to put one of his shortstops or Ryan Roberts there, he’d be SOL with that roster. He would need to take Francisco Cordero off his 6-man bullpen (a ridiculous pick in the first place), and replace him with Jay Bruce, Todd Helton, Andrew McCutchen, whoever.

Ichiro.
By name value, and if he manages to get closer to the league lead in hits, could be one of the player selected by a vote of the fans after the teams are announced. That’s the only way I see him getting in.

If they're doing the "aging player that doesn't deserve to make the All Star team but will anyway" thing
I’d much rather see Ichiro over Derek Jeter, since at least Ichiro is still good.

Dave speculated that the front office would send Pineda down for the All-Star Game
to get that extra year of service time. I wonder if the front office will (or can) request Washington to not select him.
That was before...
we found out just how good Pineda is at the MLB level. Is there any precedent for sending down a top 10-15 pitcher just to save service time? Wouldn’t the MLBPA just flip out?

Didn't think the MLBPA cared much about rookies.

I think we'd find out if the Mariners tried to send him down in any way that would cost him service time.
I asked about this precedent, because I really can’t remember any situation like this.

I guess they're not going to let Pineda pitch any more than he absolutely has to
He’s already about 2/3 of the way to his total IP from last year. He ought to get rested after the break, and maybe skip a start if possible.

The schedule should allow them to do just that.
The way the rotation is set right now, Pineda’s last start before the break will be July 9. They can reset the rotation coming out of the break and, with only 4 games before their next day off, they can skip Pineda’s first start after the break. His next start wouldn’t come until July 23 at Boston.
I don't really care who plays in the All-Star game; I see it more as a status symbol.
Like, “This guy was an All-Star this year”. What they actually did in the All-Star game is irrelevant. Girardi’s justification for choosing Verlander over Felix with the final pitcher’s spot last year was that Felix only had a few games rest before the All-Star game, while Verlander was more rested, so Verlander (who was having an inferior season) gets that awesome AS status symbol next to his Baseball-Reference year, while Felix gets nothing.
I think that’s bullshit.

It's not just status.
Some players have all star selection bonuses in their contracts. So for some, it’s money they’re not making because of another team’s coaching decision.

I know it's all just silly pagentry, but Felix, Pineda and Ichiro deserve to be there from a fairly objective standpoint.
Well, if stats were the only thing people judged these things on…..but yeah.

I never thought about it before but I think I would be somewhat disappointed if Ichiro didn't make the All-Star team
by Fearless Frog on Jun 22, 2011 12:35 PM PDT up reply actions
He'll make it, he's just in danger of not being a starter.
Good thing I voted 25 times yesterday!

Do you know what the word "objective" means?
