An Arrival, And A Return
Tonight, of course, marks the official arrival of Dustin Ackley, and while this was already a team with Michael Pineda and Justin Smoak having great success in important roles, I think it's Ackley who'll really get people to realize that this is a team set up well in both the present and the future. Pineda and Felix Hernandez make for a hell of a pitching core, and Smoak and Ackley should be rocks in the lineup. It's a good situation.
But while Ackley - and then Pineda - will attract the bulk of the attention tonight, it's worth noting that the game will also mark the return of Raul Ibanez to Seattle. It's weird to think about - both because Raul wasn't exactly an icon, and because it feels like he's been gone for 20 years - but it's a storyline that I'm sure means something to somebody.
Interestingly enough, this won't be the first time Raul returns to Seattle as a former Mariner. Between 2001-2003, Raul batted .381 with five home runs in Safeco as a visiting Royal, setting in motion the plan to reacquire him in the first place. But now he's 39. Now he's not auditioning for anything. Now he's old, and now he's much worse.
Which isn't to say that he's bad, mind you, but it looks like Raul is finally hitting the wall we've been predicting for like the last seven years. He's in the final year of his current contract, and at this rate there's no guarantee he'll sign another. For Raul Ibanez, this might be the end.
It'll be interesting to see what kind of response he gets. For truly great players in Mariners history, the response in these situations has run the gamut from hero worship to outright contempt, but Raul was never great. He was merely good. I'd expect tepid applause and a few scattered Rauuuuuuuuls, but, who knows? Raul was here during some dark, dark years. It's possible that fans won't want to think about what they've been through on a night that's all about celebrating the present and looking ahead.
Tonight also marks the return of Wilson Valdez to Seattle. When Valdez was a Mariner, he batted .198/.235/.254. I expect Valdez to get no response at all, except for one guy, somewhere in the upper deck, booing really, really loud.
Anyway, as for Raul, our friends over at The Good Phight have opened up a sort of Raul Ibanez open roast thread and have invited all of you to chime in, so please do participate if you're feeling creative and can't wait for the game to start. And once the game does start, me, I'm looking forward to Raul vs. Pineda. I live for symbolism.

Overall, he is bad
At the plate, I’m not yet convinced.

For a time it felt like he was our only good hitter outside of Ichiro. The star appears to shine brighter when there are no other stars in the sky.
I think he’ll get a very warm reception because even if the M’s sucked, Raul was a good hitter and fans will say “Hey that Raul, he was REALLY good!” even though he just seemed really good in comparison.

Same here.
Aaron Curry was a bust the moment he took the field.
I miss Alex Rodriguez.

But I think the majority of fans did not know or care that he was a bad fielder. Maybe they knew, but not to the point where they cared.
The majority of fans.

I read this as "smoosh".
Sobriety is starting to feel normal.
If that were the case I would have never gotten to watch baseball.
Ahh. What am I saying.
Fuck the Angels
If any M hits the ball, that's where they should hit it.
Fuck the Angels
Yeah - why would they do that?
It seems like the perfect chance to DH him…
Oh well. Could be fun for us.
I bet Ackley could as well.
Fuck the Angels
Why would he take the bat off his shoulder?
How come you can do all this other great shit, but you can't lie the fuck down and sleep?
If you look at it this way...
All of Ichiro’s hits ever have been bunts.

Raul Ibanez will undoubtedly go deep sometime in this series, and probably at a critical moment.
But, until that happens, I anticipate a lot of hearty RAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULs. He was here in some dark times, but he was one of the few beacons of light that made the dark times bearable, both with his bat and his hilarity in the field.
Why do they always get better when they leave?!

Shoot,
Can’t participate until tomorrow when my account becomes active. :(
Sobriety is starting to feel normal.
That's where I am.
Someone needs to share the Raul prides himself in his defense .gfs.
Fuck the Angels
I don't think we thought this one through

But anyone who had signed up before can still join in.
Sobriety is starting to feel normal.
Can they eliminate the waiting period for today only?
I know I’ve joined a couple other SBN blogs that I could comment instantly on. Just a thought.
Done
Glad you brought this up.

Plus once you sign up, you're a member of The Good Phight
Forever. At least, I don’t know how to unjoin a membership once you’ve joined. I’ve already got a couple I joined to make one comment and now can’t get rid of.
That does not mean you ever have to go back there.
Fuck the Angels
I look forward to seeing him pitch in this series
Would mean the M’s blew out their starter and the bullpen. Or an epic extra-innings game.
Either one would be fun.
That the first I've seen of Jeff's Volcano post. Wow!
Fuck the Angels
My head knows Raul is not so good but my heart loves him. :)
I even love the way he always stepped on second and first base at the beginning and end of each inning. His is the only Mariner autograph I own and I even paid real American dollars for it. That said, I still crack up every time I watch Lawn Dart.
Looks like someone finally put salt on Ibanez slugging percentage this year.
All I remember about Raul outside of this site is the awkward way the announcers yelled his name in MLB Power Pros.
...and now I'm here
Does anyone have the gif of Raul's diving catch in the NLCS followed by a very smug face?
It’s my favorite and I seem to have lost it.
Dustin Ackley is an expressive guy!
So, while flicking around the internets looking for a good image of Dustin to create a macro or two, I realized that there were way too many to choose from. Maybe the camera guys are just catching him at JUST THE RIGHT MOMENTS every time, but he sure makes some great faces when he hits the ball. If pitchers have pitch face, maybe Dustin just has “hit face” and… well… he looks like a total douchebag while doing it…

I love this boy already. Bear in mind, this is the limited number of shots that people have actually taken of him so far. I’m going to keep watching and see if he’s really just this jolly a fellow while swinging lumber.
Fans are typically idiots.

I know it's just baseball
But seeing Ackley’s face on the Gameday lineup is pretty surreal. Future!
I am guessing that "Werewolves of London" will be played.
Raul is the only player that I can recall them playing his walk-up as a visitor.
We fans treated Raul like royalty
The “Rauuuuuuuul” cheers whenever he batted were nice. And so was Ichiro knowing he could score from second without sliding when Raul was fielding a routine single in left field. After all, Ichiro had to play both center and left-center when Raul was his teammate. And he knows he hasn’t gotten faster with age.
