Angels sign Russell Branyan
As veteran mentors for Mark Trumbo go, Branyan's just about perfect. And also this is terrifying.

Because Branyan is a good player and makes the Angels better.
A win or two difference is quite a lot in this mediocre AL West.

I do not feel good about having to face Branyan as a division rival.
Though I am very happy that somebody signed him. Neyer was right—he definitely deserves a shot with another team. I had half a mind to think he should have come here.
Wasn't really a fit for him here.

No, there really wasn't.
That’s why I only had half a mind. Would have been cool though.
He hasn't been very good this year. That's why the D-back released him.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Plus he’s a slide into home away from going back on the DL anyway.
So,
I had hoped it wouldn’t come to this, but it looks like we will have to enact “Operation Trick Nightstand” and take out his toe again.
Whelp.
Maybe his back will go out again.

I hope that contraction catches on. It reeks of southern charm.

I root for injuries all the time
I hate a lot of players. I might not be a good person but it feels great.

I'm not rooting for it, I like the guy.
Wouldn’t be heartbroken if it happened.

It's was pretty damn awesome when Morales broke his leg

I didn't root for it, but I did relish its hilarity.
You can have this cake and eat it too.

More annoying than scary/terrifying.
Would rather he not get multiple opportunities to hit dingers against us.

Everything the Angels do, on and off the field, are calculated moves to annoy us Mariners fans.

Haha, yeah. That was pretty great.
Also, Scott Kazmir.

But then Haren so it kinda evens out.
And we’ve been over all this before.

Hey Scott's doing wonders for us in Salt Lake City.
And for a great price.

Not that scary
His back won’t hold up. Remember this isn’t 2009…He gets 4-5 HR’s tops and thats it.
Using phrases like "probably" or "I think" or "in my opinion" can be a big help.
by Eyebrows on May 26, 2011 12:59 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Not everybody has to conform to you. This guy knows his back facts. And Russell Branyans back can clearly only hold 4-5 dingers
by JamMasterJesus on May 26, 2011 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions
His poor back, nothing but a fraction of what it used to be
Hey… this might be some new metric. Wonder if it passes that whole correlation causation test for statistical analysis. What’s that other one. R factor? P factor? Wonder what the R factor of his back is these days
Keep in mind this number is not park adjusted
by Kermit. on May 26, 2011 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions 9 recs
I'm sure in the warm Anaheim of Los Angles air, his back will hold up to at least 6-7 HRs
by JamMasterJesus on May 26, 2011 1:11 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
BOOM! Park adjustment! Thanks man
I really didn’t have the time to do the work
by Kermit. on May 26, 2011 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions 9 recs
Hang on, I got this. He hit 15 HR's last year and he's only going to hit 5 this year.
I got it! One third (1/3)!
This is a constant truth. Branyan's signing has not changed this.

Aaaaaand Branyan pinch-hits as an Angel in the 9th inning and almost hit a game-tying dinger.
Oh goodie.
Haha, I hope this will symbolize what Branyan brings to the Angels.
He’ll give the Angels hope, but then tragically fall short.
Looks like he literally hit that to the deepest part of the park.
Sobriety is... Interesting.
Russell Branyan. You LITERALLY hit that to the deepest part of the park, and I am very proud of you.

Okay, I know the hate for that word.
Lets just say it looks like that corner there is the deepest point in the OF. Probably about 410 to there I would say?
Sobriety is... Interesting.
There's no hate for literally, just its misuse.
by Eyebrows on May 26, 2011 3:59 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Literally is a perfectly cromulent word.
by Eyebrows on May 26, 2011 3:59 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions 1 recs
I'll admit,
I don’t know how this is an incorrect use of the word. The definition is "actually, without exaggeration", and that part of the park is actually the deepest part, without exaggeration…
Am I missing something here?
Sobriety is... Interesting.
Don't want to harp on it. But since you asked
You said he “literally hit that to the deepest part of the park.” In this case literally is an adverb describing hit. You probably wanted something more like: “Looks like he hit that to literally the deepest part of the park.” But even that is pointless. In that context it’s redundant.
In my mind the word literally is best used to clarify a situation which would otherwise be interpreted figuratively, i.e. "He literally beat the shit out of that guy (I saw the poop come out)!
by Eyebrows on May 26, 2011 4:09 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions 1 recs
I see your point.
My placement of the word in the sentence was incorrect, and probably unnecessary. That makes more sense. Although it would be an accurate (although completely unnecessary) adverb for the hit as well.
Sobriety is... Interesting.

Wasn't giving you a hard time about the usage of literally.
The word has just gotten a whole new usage of fun after Parks & Rec.

I'm not really sure.
Most of me thinks he really won’t make much of a difference in anything. But there’s that little fraction of my that think’s he’ll become the second player to hit Safeco’s roof. Except he’ll do it while it’s open.
Tangentially related....
Mark Trumbo and Hank Conger have the same stupid-looking smile/face. Does the team photographer make them smile like pedophiles, or is it just something that happens when one signs a contract with the Angels?
