The Mariners made $1.7 million last year
Says Greg Johns, MLB.com
Apparently the team will start sharing revenue with Washington state if they make more than $38 million by 2018, when the lease expires.

The Mariners making a profit off of 2010 is like the restaurants in earthquake devastated Japan charging $20 for a slice of pizza.
They have the right to do so, but come on.
Hmm. I was making this statement in jest.
But yes, I think you are onto something here.
Shouldn't you be happy that your favorite team made a profit even in a down year?
The Mariners making a profit off of 2010 is like your favorite pizza place making a profit despite that one unfortunate occurrence of salmonella due to a shipment of tainted spinach.

I think the analogy is more like Carlos Silva's contract.
Rules is rules, but fuck you, Carlos Silva!
If the Mariners were a charity looking to save orphans, but instead killed orphans by dropping sacks of money on them, you might have a point
but the Mariners are a business. they’re in a highly emotional business, sure, but just like any grocery store, hardware store or clothes store, the Mariners exist to make money. They have no obligation to not make money if they put out a bad product – unlike those above examples, people still pay money for a bad product when it says MARINERS on it, for some reason.
I don't get it.
Original balance was $200 million. Current balance after 2010 is $38 million. According to the article they didn’t even make a profit in 2008 (surprised face). How did they make $162 million between mid-1999 and 2009?
A baseball team making a $1.7 million dollar profit is like a regular person making $100 more than they spend over the course of a year

Start a cult around your success, and they'll beg you to stay!

This is very encouraging, it can only be good news that our team can make a profile even when the on-field product sucks.
This bodes well for the future when, hopefully, the team doesn’t suck quite so bad. Increased profit doesn’t always mean increased budgets; however it certainly is more appealing than the alternative as if the team was losing money you could be sure the budget wouldn’t be increased.
Yeah but it's not really a profit
A company the size of a baseball team spends hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars every year- $1.7 million is just a lucky break, it could have just as easily gone the other way.

or put another way if you had that much money lying around and had the option to buy a baseball team to make another $1.7 million you wouldn't do it
That’s a horrible return on investment

The upshot being...
…the team is well run —it will essentially break even when in a horrible year (lose a little maybe or win a little).
