Fantasy Baseball 2011
It's that time of year again. Time for the one thread of the year were we do care about your fantasy teams. So as such, use this thread to discuss all your leagues, teams, and players.
Now as far as my league goes, for those of you that don't know, I run the "Official" LL fantasy league, which has been going on for about 7 years now. It's been a very fun and very competitive league.
It's a 20 team, H2H league with daily scoring. I am inviting 18 of the 20 managers from last year back, which is easily the best turnaround we've ever had in this league. So for those of you that were in it last year, check your emails. Once everybody checks in, we'll go about filling the empty spots, it'll be first come first serve. All settings and scoring have been rolled over from last year, as I think we've established a pretty good system.
For me personally, even though I've always been pretty firm about this kind of thing as a commissioner, I had to bail on the league last year about 70% of the way in because of LLLJ stuff. This year, I have alot of other LLLJ stuff going on for at least the next 5-6 months, so I can't guarantee that I will be able to pay attention all year. If I can't, thankfully you can transfer commissioner powers to another manager, so if it comes to that, I'll choose somebody to replace me. Hopefully it will not come to that, as I really enjoy playing with you guys.
And for those of you that don't make it into the league, there are always plenty of excellent leagues that other people here have been running as well, so be sure to check those out.

I'd be interested in joining if you have an open spot.
My fantasy leagues have dwindled to two this year – I need to get back on the horse.
I'm still waiting on two people(I'm gonna give them till Sunday to sign up) then I'll post a comment opening it up for the remaining spots.
RIP Dave Neihaus.
Out of curiosity how much of a time commitment does it really take per week to particpate in fantasy leagues in general?
Beyond the draft, it's really up to you.
If you set your line up daily, it can take 5 minutes a day, which would be 35 minutes a week. You can do it while watching TV or drinking a delicious cup of tea, if you like multitasking.
The more you want to win the more time you need to spend
I typically spend less than 15 min a week tweaking my fantasy team, but then I typically finish in the bottom half of a fairly noncompetitive league. If I devoted an hour or two to it in a week, I’d probably do a lot better.
I probably spend an hour per week per team
but a lot of that time is just because I’m bored. You only need to really check your team once or twice a week so 15 minutes a week would be good enough and shouldn’t hurt you too much overall. I thought it would be too much time when I first started but if you already waste time on the internet, it will seamlessly meld into your daily routine.

So we can really do this huh? I feel naughty.
I’m having trouble deciding on a keeper between Mike Stanton, Ian Kinsler, and Jay Bruce.
Suggestions?
Personally I'd hang onto Kinsler. Productive fantasy outfielders (I feel) are easier to come by than second basemen
Stanton could be huge though…. but depending on the knowledge of your opponents (you in the LL league?) he may stay undrafted for a couple rounds

Damn, I forgot about this thread.
Thanks! I am in a pretty smart/competitive league. I am keeping Stanton but with the #3 pick in the draft, may take Kinsler.

Got the invite
Thanks for having me back again.
I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.
Looks like there's going to be enough interest for a spin-off league.
I’d be happy to set up a Joey, Maude or Pinky and the Brain league. Everyone like ESPN?
I'd be in.

I'm looking for a new league since the commish of my last league went and changed everything.
What settings?
I'd be open for discussion. My other league is year-long rotisserie (with dumb categories)
So I’d be down with a points-based H2H.
I would also like to join a spin off league
I posted a fanshot about this last week, but Fangraphs partnered with a new fantasy league that seems interesting to me. If people sign up before March 1 it’s only $10. If people aren’t interested in paying, or would prefer a different format, I’m happy to go along with something else.

OK. I am stumped in one keeper league
12 team roto:
No brainer keeps (to me): 1B Votto, 2B Pedroia, SP Halladay, OF Choo
Keep 3, toss 1:
C~McCann
OF~ Alex Rios
OF~Andre Ethier
SP~Jered Weaver
McCann and Weaver are no-brainers, I'd say.
Then I’d take Rios over Ethier because of the SBs.

You aren't going to find a better catcher unless Mauer or Posey are available at your pick.
Even if you land one of them McCann would make a great trade piece.

Woooo, just made the cut.
I was probably the only M’s fan last year who wasn’t happy when Morales broke his leg in that dogpile.
I pledge to finish higher then 18th this year. Should not be a difficult task.

I might be able to do this,
Is this an everyday league?
I tried to play last year...
I am too green at Fantasy Baseball. I play Fantasy Football like a Super Bowl Champ though. I would be interested in a Free League. Can’t see myself paying $10 for something I am not familiar with.
I can't tell you how many times I've paid more than that for a beer I've never had before...
and it worked out.
Not to knock, everyone’s income levels are different, but if 10 dollars is your reason for NOT playing fantasy sports (even if you have no experience with the sport) then you’re being a little ridiculous, compared to the amount of time you’ll spend on your team 10 bucks is a steal for the time/value of your entertainment dollar.
My co-Gm and I just spent 40 dollars TALKING about our team over burgers and beers with a mag purchase… but I consider it a fair value for the opportunity to hang with my buddy and talk sports, but with an actual purpose instead of our normal random meandering sportstalk.

This year?
Shortstop, if you can get Hanley Ramirez or Tulowitzki, I’d say go for it. It gets pretty grim after those guys.
I've never liked doing it. The way I see it, you can always trade from an area of strength to address a hole later.
RIP Dave Neihaus.
Plus, someone like Alexei Ramirez could blow up.
Last year in my draft, I had the #2 pick and got Pujols. I was happy to have him and not HanRam.
I'm kind of a fan
Like any strategy, it depends on a lot of factors, and shouldn’t be taken as gospel. Nevertheless, if I’m drafting in the middle of the first round, I’m probably more likely to grab Tulo than Votto, since their numbers aren’t that different over a full season.
I know there was a fanshot regarding this, but there might be more eyes here.
Is anyone interested in doing a 12-person OttoNeu league at fangraphs? I’ve got a few people already, but it’s going to take 12 people who are really committed to the idea for a few years. And I figured LL is the perfect crowd for this sort of thing.
You can find info on it here.

I posted the fanshot, but I'd be happy to join forces with you.
There were two other people from the fanshot interested in an ottoneu league (Big Seahawk Loser; mattlock). I can’t speak for them, but I’d be willing to commit for a couple years. It sounds like a lot more fun than the standard free leagues, and I love the addition of off-season features.
by Avery Bowron on Feb 22, 2011 6:20 PM PST up reply actions
I've got about 3 other people that I know of, maybe four
But that’d put us at 7 or 8. We need, then, 5-4 more people to make this work. Any takers?

Would you be so kind as to shoot me an email? I'd love to try and coordinate forces on this.

Alright, there are 4 open spots left in my league for those who want it. It's first come, first serve.
All further talk will take place in the league itself.

It looks like Goose’s league is full. The spin off league has the same scoring system.
I joined your league. Team Bob!
I’ve not got a clue what I’m doing so I look forward to finishing like my favorite team often does-last.
Yes, though maybe I'll change it to put you last.

Heh, actually I still have 4 open spots, but I'm perfectly fine going with 16 people if it means getting a decent number in your league as well.
RIP Dave Neihaus.
I tried joining yours yesterday, but it said the league was full.
I’ve joined this one, and now – Hey look! A three-headed monkey!
[wanders off]
Aha! Apparently you have to go into the invite friends section of the commish tools and delete teams that haven't joined or were not invited in order for their to be openings.
There should be 4 openings. Try it now.
RIP Dave Neihaus.
Maybe your link is just wonky.
I still got the error #152 message, you aren’t a member of this league yada yada. So i just went backdoor to the login page and got in.
Blistering Sexitude just signed up.

I need more teams for my head to head league.
The auction’s in two weeks. I’m hoping to have twelve teams, but I guess ten would be doable. We have nine right now. If you’re interested, email me DanMellenLovesSlurpees@gmail.com.
Long-running league traditionally filled by mostly LL'ers:
Having trouble getting some of the old guard back, thought I’d try getting some new LL talent. The league will only have 16 teams for draft day, so if we go over you may deleted. Preference will be determined by your yahoo fantasy rating. We want active owners, and people who win tend to be active. Fairest solution to a dilemma that doesn’t yet exist that I can think of.

holy shit its christmas.
My bench (as far as batters are concerned) is Raul Ibanez, Miguel Olivo and Jose Lopez.
Clearly my team is destined for greatness.
Hey all, looking to fill up a fantasy league!
Head to Head league, live draft with 6 teams currently (culled out all the inactive members from last season). Looking to add 6-8 more by draft time! Scoring is R/H/HR/RBI/SB/AVG/OPS for batters, and W/SV/K/ERA/WHIP/KBB/QS for pitchers.
Draft is tomorrow (March 29) at 7pm Pacific.

Has anybody tried a hall of shame fantasy league where you try to have the worst team
I’m trying to put one together with some friends. If anybody has some words of wisdom, I would appreciate it. It seems like it might be a little tricky to get it to work well.
A few suggestions
- Make sure you set weekly minimum AB/IP so you don’t have teams that just stock part-time players and pinch hitters. Also have stiff penalties for any player that does not meet the threshold.
-Allow roster moves (add/drops/trades) only a few times a season. It injects strategy into the draft/transactions (having to gauge whether a player will be on a roster throughout a transaction period); it also keeps the league competitive without losing the humor and passivity. Plus there’s a bent appeal to rooting for players to suck but not suck enough to lose their job outright.
- Incorporate one or two screwball suck stat wrinkles (e.g. GIDP and SO for hitters; Wild Pitches and balks for pitchers) into the scoring system. Any more than that and it gets tough trying to find “valuable players”.
I had my first auction draft last night
I’m not sure whether I like it better or not. I think I spent too much to start out but I am overall fairly happy with the team I got. I think I got more stars than I might have gotten otherwise.
What draft style do you prefer?
I also did my first ever auction draft
I didn’t do that great, but that’s largely my own fault as I didn’t have time to do any serious prep work or mock drafts before our draft. I’m also fairly happy, even though I don’t feel like I did well I still ended up with Lincecum, Votto, and Posey. The problem was those three ate up so much of my budget I couldn’t actually bid on a player for something like six more rounds. By the last few rounds of the draft there was one guy left with $24 and he could pretty much cherry pick whoever he wanted because the rest of us could only bid a max of $1 at that point. I want to be that guy next year.
I would like to do the auction draft again next year but I will definitely do more homework.
The same thing happened here.
Most of my budget was eaten up by Mauer, Carrlos Gonzalez and Felix and there was a guy with like $55 left at the end. I don’t feel like any of my picks were too bad and I certainly didn’t feel like I overbid on anyone except maybe $12 on Matt Thornton. It was ridiculous how much of a deal people got on the end because everyone overbid early though.
by Mariner John on Mar 30, 2011 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions
The only one I felt bad about was Buster Posey
I definitely overbid on him ($56!), but he’s eligible at two positions and he’s a good hitting catcher, so I rationalized it that way.
I didn't say it was the smartest move in the world
but Posey was also the last non-shitty catcher available so there was that as well.
Here is a hint: People will always underrate the Rockies pitching for people not named Ubaldo
For instance, Jason Hammel is owned in only 2% of yahoo leagues, yet is quite good.
Nearly drafted him in my 10-team league in one of the later rounds
but he got taken two picks before I got there.

I have Brandon Morrow in two leagues. I hate myself.
In the LL spin-off league, I also took Aardsma, Pineda, and Felix. That probably was a dumb set of moves, assuming LL’ers like the M’s.
