Buster Olney on Felix

There really doesn't seem to be much to look forward to this season but this is nice to hear. My favorite quote: "It wouldn't be a surprise if at the end of his career we look back and we see that Felix Hernandez was like what Cal Ripken was to the Orioles or what Tony Gwynn was to the San Diego Padres." Long live the King.

The difference between Felix and Cal Ripken is that Felix will be known more for his actual ability than for something stupid
You make it sound as if Cal Ripken was bad.

Depends what you think of his glove.
As a hitter, he was ~league average from age 31 onward
I am not the statistical expert that you are obviously, but it seems like he didn't have a bad season until his age 36 season.
And then he put up 2.9 WAR in half a season 2 years later.
But what is fangraphs using for defense pre-2001? Did they switch to TZ for those years or figure out UZR for pre-2001?

Must be a running theme in the Ripken family.

Not a shop.
On of the more famous baseball card “mistakes”. You can still find them on ebay usually.

From the way the story goes, it was actually Cal's fault as he had earlier swiped his brother's bat and defaced it.
Dawg! He put da team on his back!
Cal discussed the incident in brief on NPR's "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" recently.

At roughly 90 career wins above average, i don't thinks that's possible
Ripken doesn’t get nearly enough credit for his defensive value
Yes but what Cal Ripken did was both awesome and stupid

So maybe he could have been even better
I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ugh
I didn't know Felix lived in Seattle year round
It is awesome that he is that committed to the Mariners, hopefully he stays here a long long time.
That first winter in the northwest can be tough.
I enjoyed mine, but then I moved here for the rain (I grew up on the prairies where it’s sunny ALL THE TIME and I was sick of it).
But my boss came out last winter and he complained for months.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
