OT: Christmas plans, traditions and other nonsense, Part Deux.

Now we have reached Christmas Eve, and everyone is scattered about, driving hither, sitting yon, enjoying some quality family time. Unless, of course, you have already reached that moment when you say, "Excuse me but I really have to check my email, honestly, it won't be a moment" and hare off to hide in that spare room with the computer and start surfing for anything that will tide you over yet another discussion of Aunt Helen's corns.

So .... continuing the holiday traditions theme-- is there a movie that you have to watch each Christmas Day? A particular holiday cd/LP that gets dragged out each year? Something more recent that bids fair to becoming a new tradition (coughDoctorWhoChristmasSpecialcough)?

If you managed to hold out on checking LL until Christmas day, did you try something new this year, foodwise? A different side, a turducken, some new baked item that won't be making a return?

I seem to gravitate to the Tabernacle choir and St. Olaf's PBS music every year (they were on last night).

I bought A Christmas Story to take to the folks tomorrow. I just finished watching the worst bowl game in the history of college football and am now wrapping presents sans tape (hello glue stick) while watching a few minutes of The Sound of Music.

My best Christmases have been spent in the snow, either solo or with friends, snowshoeing. We’re a little light here at the moment but did get some snow today so a mountain trip might be in order Monday.

I would kill to watch a movie on Christmas Day.

But I have to catch up with all of the family, immediate and extended. I live 3000 miles from all of them and they want to hear all about my life. Blah, blah, blah.

On the plus side, we’re starting the tradition of having bloody marys while we open presents. It’s going to be a long day of drinking and dealing with family.

I didn't realize that Greg was buried

Carp said it turned out to be Halman’s family who were providing most of the support to the players, before they laid their son to rest wearing the Mariners uniform that had made him so proud when he’d reached the Major Leagues.

7pm Christmas day for me now.

I ate too much, but damn it was good.
No cricket like normal – bigger family thing tomorrow so it’ll be then instead. So I took my three nephews and niece to the park and chased them around instead. We tend to do physical stuff rather than tv, etv.
Good times.
Nothing new food wise this year, but I did the ham this year. Marmalade, brown sugar and seeded mustard is the best glaze ever.

by Aussie Mariner on Dec 25, 2011 12:15 AM PST reply actions

It's the bomb.

Cup of marmalade, cup of brown sugar, tablespoon of mustard. You can use any but we prefer seeded.
Our method: Cover ham in foil, cook for two hours at 180C, remove from oven, remove foil and cover in half of glaze, return to oven uncovered on 210C for 30 min. Add juice of a squeezed orange to remainder of glaze then baste ham with it every ten minutes for an hour. Voila, delicious tasty ham!

It has been suggested

That I pour out some beer from the nearby Ommegang brewery. I may have to do that…

by section331 on Dec 25, 2011 2:29 PM PST up reply actions

Ommegang has some very nice brews for those who like the Belgian style.

If you do get a bottle to pour for Dave, be sure to try at least a few sips. This time of year I would go with either Three Philosophers or Adoration (their winter brew). If you like the lighter bodied stuff you can’t go wrong with Hennepin or their Belgian pale ale.

No power

Do you think Santa found out I stayed up all night play call of duty and drinking a bottle of Scotch with my roommate?

by LeftArrow2 on Dec 25, 2011 3:37 PM PST reply actions

No traditional watching on Christmas Day,

but when we decorate the family tree (usally the first weekend in December), we always watch Christmas Vacation. I thought I was going to miss out on that this year since I came up in the middle of December, luckily though, the family waited until I was in town to do it.

It’s funny how as I’ve gotten older, I have come to appreciate traditions more and more.

by seattle_since_81 on Dec 25, 2011 9:34 PM PST reply actions

This got cut off the in the other OT, but can anyone recommend a decent bottle of scotch?

I want to splurge a little bit, but keep it pretty reasonable.

SB recommended Lagavulin, but a few reviews said it’s not for the casual scotch drinker, I’m a casual scotch drinker.

by BigR on Dec 26, 2011 9:11 AM PST reply actions

Glenfiddich's a good one to begin with, Talisker if you want something stronger.

You should definitely buy a miniature of Lagavulin/Laphroaig though, just to see if you like Islays. I’m a pretty casual drinker too but I prefer them.

by Eyeball Kid on Dec 26, 2011 9:43 AM PST up reply actions

I did now!

Great info, thanks.

I’m intrigued by the 12 year Macallan you recommended. I’ll have to go check out what my local has, I doubt we have the selection you guys have over there. Might have to pick up a few smaller bottles, depending on what I can find.

Thanks again.

by BigR on Dec 26, 2011 2:58 PM PST up reply actions

oops!

I meant to add that there is another speyside single malt that I neglected to mention, probably because Washington state quit importing it. The brand is Cardhu and, when we had it, it ran just under $40. Give it a whirl if your state has it.

by ToddK on Dec 26, 2011 4:27 PM PST up reply actions

My scotch history is very limited

I bought a bottle of Johnny Walker Gold label and it was definitely enjoyable. It’s got a smokiness flavor to it and it may or may not be overpowering. It’s a blended scotch too.

The other bottle I had was Glenlivet 21 years. I liked this one a lot. It’s a sweeter than the Johnny Walker Gold Label and seems to be easier to drink. It has a little bit of smokiness to it, but not a whole lot. It’s also a single malt.

by LeftArrow2 on Dec 28, 2011 10:44 PM PST up reply actions

The blended scotches tend to have that almost barfy kind of flavor to them.

Stay away from any scotch that doesn’t say “single malt” on the label. There are different “styles” of scotch so it’s a good idea to talk to someone at your local liquor store that knows something about them so you can get an idea what to expect from each region.

I always recommend starting with the highland malts as they tend to be the smoothest and easier on the palette than the Islays which can get pretty peaty. The Speyside malts are generally fairly sweet but start to get a bit more peaty. yada yada yada…

Try going to different higher end bars and try a new single every week/month or whatever your fancy. The bartenders will always be able tell you what the scotch drinkers are ordering so you can figure your taste by the shot as opposed to the bottle.

by ToddK on Dec 29, 2011 7:55 PM PST up reply actions

Blended whiskies are fine. You just need to know what you're getting.

Like with any other scotch, quality depends on the process and ingredients; blended malt whiskies can be as good, or even better in some cases, than single malts. Compass Box has some really excellent ones out on the market right now.

Being a college student the most excited I was for a gift were a box of three boxer shorts and 6 pairs of socks.

I opened it and was like YES! I needed these. Otherwise I got the Band of Brothers Special Collector’s Edition Tin and a very nice North Face Jacket.

by Slurvey on Dec 26, 2011 11:02 AM PST up reply actions

Good stuff on the whole.
  • Best would be difficult. From my dad’s side, I got a bunch of hiking gear (rainproof coat, windproof liner, pole, socks), but my mom gave me some DVDs (Down by Law, Space Ghost: Coast to Coast Season 3, Mr. Show Season 3). I’ll get use out of both, definitely.
  • I don’t really have a worst, except my uncle gave me a Starbucks gift card that I probably won’t use.
  • Funniest might be my grandma on my dad’s side giving some, but not all of the grandchildren, money inside a puzzle box that you had to solve first before opening it.

My grandmother does the money-in-a-puzzle-box thing also, and when we open presents we try to do it at the same time.

Then it becomes a fun race and not just everybody opening envelopes full of money and trying to outdo each other on how thankful they are.

It’s hilariously awkward that she gives only some of the kids the money, though.

My worst: The flu. Fuck you random guy in bell square for getting my sick for xmas.

Best: HP Touchpad. This thing is pretty awesome. Took me a whole 5 minutes to get android running on it.

Best that I didn’t get to give you ask? I had a white elephant gift of a bag of candy and a singing Justin Beiber toothbrush. The flu kinda kept me from going and giving it away though, so YAY! I think it will be my dog’s new toothbrush

Between the Wife and I,

We got Skyward Sword, Forza 4, Tiger Woods 2012, and the two gun Cabelas game.
We’re never leaving our house again.

We also had two awesome family christmases, one at her parents and one at mine.
We got to surprise my dad with a 52 inch tv, so that was pretty cool. He was forced in to early retirement and has really wanted a new tv for a while, felt good.

New ski boots!

I had no idea it was possible to get a pair that didn’t hurt like crazy. Apparently the ski manufacturers have realized that not everyone has bony calves and narrow feet.

Worst gift? I don’t know. Socks? But I’m at the point in life where getting new socks is awesome.

Presents!

Best: Either the Chival Regal Royal Salute 21 Year Old from my brother or the Invicta watch from my wife.

Worst: A case of Red Bull as a Yankee Swap gift

Funniest: subscription to a gentleman’s magazine that features women with gigantic booties; from my brother as payback for the Christmas joke gift I got him (a four-foot tall black Santa). We have a family tradition that started between my father and his brother that, every Christmas, you exchange a terribly horrendously ugly or offensive gift that needs to be displayed prominently in your house throughout the year.

I got a PS3

I think my mum felt bad about me only having one thing to unwrap and got me a history of Marvel comics book, which is great but I guess is worst by default.

I ended up buying the worst present overall for my dad. I ordered a three-disc Thin Lizzy DVD but was instead sent a Gerard Depardieu film. I didn’t open the package until a few days ago so didn’t have time to return it :(

Although the Planet of the Apes (original movies) Blu-ray box set and Disneyland Kinect game are close. Worst would have to be a t-shirt that was 2 sizes too big. So. Much. Rustic Fruit Desserts cookbook
The Perfect Scoop cookbook
an AMAZING food thermometer
pot holders

ceramic pie weights
blue diamond earrings
WWE 12 for Xbox
Santino Marella shirt (also wrestling related)
negligee FROM MY MOTHER
the complete Looney Tunes dvd box set (including those crazy World War 2 racist propaganda ones)
a knife bag for pastry school
homemade tortillas
and tickets to the WWE Smackdown taping at Key Arena in February

I was massively spoiled this year.

But I thought it was really cool.

All I got was two books, a $50 check and a set of Old Spice man-smellies.

I’m still really happy with how this winter break has turned out despite the fact that my house caught fire and I missed out on both internships I applied for. (That by itself should have made this the worst stretch of college ever.)

I got to see my best friend for the first time in more than a year and a half, I spent time with one of my sisters for the first time in six months, I spent time with my other sister and her two sons, I got to spend nearly a week with my mother and her new beau, I’m staying with a really good friend of mine right now, get to meet a special girl in Spokane and get to see a friend in Seattle, all while covering three basketball games in four days while up north. I’ll have ended up covering 10 basketball games over Christmas break when all is said and done, and that’s pretty awesome in itself. That I got to see all of the family and friends whom I’m close with makes it amazing.

by Kermit. on Dec 27, 2011 4:34 PM PST up reply actions

Way late on this, but it's a great topic.

Best: This wasn’t technically meant to be a Christmas present, but on Christmas Eve my uncle gave me his old TRS-80 Model 100, along with pristine carrying case, cassette recorder, external accoustic couplers, and dot matrix printer. I’d always looked up to him and his journalism career, and lately I’ve been accumulating old computers, so this was special for a few different reasons. I’m looking forward to tinkering with it.

Worst/Funniest: From one relative, a set of novelty post-its with a picture of ducks and the text “Webbed Pages” accompanied by a pencil that looks like a tree.

I also gave myself a Christmas present – a new car! Well, a decade-old car, but it’s so monumentally nicer and better than anything else I’ve owned, it seems new to me.

Seriously though,

in a larger city, with a lot of buildings taller than 12 floors, in close proximity, it would probably be less useful than one might think.

I would add that GPS service is pretty much everywhere these days and if your vehicle is newer than ‘07, it’s most likely got the tech on-board whether you want it or not.

by ToddK on Dec 26, 2011 7:41 PM PST up reply actions

Nearest 12 story building is 500-600 miles away.

I drive an older vehicle that has no built in GPS.
I was given one of those things to use for work, and the paranoid side of me wants to think they can use it to log my coordinates. I know they can’t use it to real time track me or anything, but I turn in an in progress map every week, and I’m worried they could have a log in that attaches to that file.

Making a new website.

I’m starting a website. Something simple. A blog basically. But it is the first time I have done it. I’m somewhat tech-smart, but I’ve never made a website before so I could use help on getting started and knowing which is the best way to start your own blog and not on blogger.

  1. Which domain host site? Here is a list of the “10 best of 2011” so do those ones all look legit? I know I’ve always heard “dont use godaddy or any of those really popular domain sites” but I’m not sure what the difference is between godaddy or something else if I’m just buying a domain name. How much is it going to cost to get a regular, unpopular domain name, I just can’t tell if fees are monthly/yearly/one time or whatever.
  1. Software for making and designing a website? Same as before, I think I can navigate with software that requires a little more techie knowledge but still something that’s user friendly. I’m using a MacBook if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any help you could provide. Hoping to get this new site up soon!

And yay for comment barrage

But if you can fake your way through CSS and have a basic knowledge of HTML, I’d install Wordpress- I use it in non-blog form (most obvious on wyomingroutes.org)- found a theme I liked, doctored the script so I liked the aesthetics, and then it’s really easy to write new pages.

by Kenneth Arthur on Dec 26, 2011 7:03 PM PST up reply actions

Nice. Without getting into politics, is it SOPA related? and we can end it at that.

So if I install Wordpress, find a theme I like, and it’ll do most of the work itself? Can I have stuff like an email or does that have to do with godaddy.com or another hosting site?

Yes, and I don't really want to support a company that has at one point supported it, even if they have rescinded that support

I think you’d have to go through whoever your host is to set up email- that wouldn’t be directly included in Wordpress

Exactly- find CMS based themes, and then you can set it up to display a static page instead of the most recent post, and then it looks just like a website. The community has developed pretty extensive plug-in scripts, so if you need to do something fancy you can usually google it and there’s a plugin that does whatever you need.

In another post, Kermit mentioned finding his dad's house on Google Earth

Over the last few years, I’ve been fascinated watching the changes made to our old house by its most recent owner. He/she took a 1958 Eastside split-level and transformed it. The top level, facing the street, is now in the Mediterranean style … the six-foot wood fence in front came down to be replaced by a piazza with wrought iron and statuary, palmettos planted in the front yard, a row of shaped yews went in next to a now-paved sideyard, and the entire frontage of the house (including what was once the garage) was given a shaped-facing, small windows, and then stuccoed and painted. Google Earth shows us that they also built a huge deck off the living room extending over what was once a little bit of patio in the back.

I soooooooo want to know what it now looks like inside.

holy crap the smallish Bellevue house I grew up in is now worth $810K

but the house is still “worth” almost twice as much as my dad sold it for some 15 years ago…

by msb on Dec 28, 2011 10:37 AM PST up reply actions

Google earth and people are kind of mind blowing, in the subtleties.

Putting a date on my dad’s place, for instance. Nearly everything is the same. He has the same vehicles for decades, and parks them in the same places. So do most of the neighbors. Except for knowing specific details like when he switched from gravity irrigation to sprinkler circles, when he rotates his crops and which field, removed a ditch, etc., it could be any point in time over the last 20 years.

Make overs like your old house or the sudden increase in pdb’s old house MIT be kind of extreme, or they might not. I don’t know. My own perspective is slow, negligible, subtle changes. The different perspectives are interesting. I don’t know what they mean, if anything, but it’s interesting.

So apparently, Boston has decided to start selling it's farm for relievers.

First the Melancon trade, and now this:

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Red Sox have acquired closer Andrew Bailey from the A’s.
Josh Reddick is headed to Oakland, possibly in a package of other prospects. Bailey, 27, has a 2.07 career ERA and 9.0 career K/9 through three major league seasons. He’s expected to serve as Boston’s primary ninth-inning man in 2012, pushing the newly-acquired Mark Melancon into a setup role. Bailey is eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter and is under team control through 2014. More to come.

by Goose on Dec 28, 2011 2:01 PM PST reply actions

The funny thing is not any one of the players heading Oakland's way are considered "top" prospects.

Reddick’s probably the best of the lot and he’s really no more than a 4th outfielder on a good baseball team.

by ThomasG on Dec 28, 2011 5:43 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, but what is Andrew Bailey really? Or more importantly, what is he to the A's?

He’s a closer for a team that will win 75 games at most, that needs as much offensive help as they can get, and entering arbitration with 3 years of club control left. He’s a good closer but he’s also gotten slightly worse each year. At least Josh Reddick has a small possibility of turning into something.

follow @casetines

by Kenneth Arthur on Dec 29, 2011 9:14 AM PST up reply actions

I don't argue that; Bailey's really nothing more than a decent reliever with a "closer" label attached.

My comment was more directed at “Boston selling its farm”. Neither Head nor Alcantara were anything more than organizational fodder and Reddick is pretty much redundant with Kalish around. In the grand scheme of things none of these guys had much of a future with the team – it’s not like they traded Middlebrooks, Bogaerts or Ranaudo or anything.

by ThomasG on Dec 29, 2011 9:57 AM PST up reply actions

An idea I'd never thought of before:

Calendar design

Instead of having 52.14 weeks/year plus a leap day every ~4 years, why not have 52 weeks and tack on a leap week every 5 or 6 years? A benefit would be that calendar dates become stationary to days of the week which in turn could be one of the sleeper benefits, a seemingly small change that actually generates a huge summation of saved efficiency.

by Matthew on Dec 28, 2011 3:48 PM PST reply actions

Would it really be beneficial for calendar dates to always land on the same day of the week?

One of the trade-offs of having my birthday occasionally land on a Wednesday is knowing that sometimes it’s on a weekend. Should the fourth of July always be on a Friday or Monday for the sake of three day weekends? Will Christian groups create pressure for Christmas to be on a certain day of the week?

I can see the positives to having this type of calendar, but the can of worms it would open would be outrageous. Outrageous worms.

A top-notch triple slash line, but not the career power numbers I would usually expect for writers to put him in from the get-go. Especially if he was a “first baseman” as compared to if you give those numbers to a SS or 2B.

By and large voters are cognizant that he was one of the greatest hitters of his generation; they don’t have qualms with Edgar the player in the Hall. They’re using Edgar qua DH as a platform to curmudgeonly hold on to their outdated beliefs that a DH is somehow not a real position.

Thanks in advance.

Your best BluRay player is still going to be a PS3.

It’ll be the only one that keeps up with software updates consistently and has all the other features of any other BluRay player (and then some).

Even the awesome Marantz that I bought that promised “lifetime updates” according to the company when I bought it had announced EOL and if they make another revision to the BR spec I’m out of luck. The PS3 will at least be supported by Sony for another 5+ years, if their support of the PS2 has been any indication.

by Eyeball Kid on Dec 30, 2011 11:02 AM PST up reply actions

I'm sure it was a cost-saving measure at first, but it makes sense to me for other reasons.

What size are they supposed to send, 2m? That means that some will have to buy one because they are 8 feet out, and others will have to have that rather stiff, large diameter cable rolled up around back when it’s parked a half a meter out.

Neither option is that appealing to me, I’d rather be required to get one of my own and not have to pay for a cable twice and have one sitting in my extra cable box somewhere.

It's hard to convince people to let you eat them if you're an asshole. - Thingray

by Faux on Dec 30, 2011 11:07 AM PST up reply actions

I agree with most of this

The only thing is that it might lead people to buy extortionately priced cables. I realise this has nothing to do with Sony, but maybe if they included a leaflet with advice on buying a cable…

by Eyeball Kid on Dec 30, 2011 5:48 PM PST up reply actions

I can't speak to the quality of AmazonBasics cables (oddly enough), but Monoprice's are excellent.

I’ve bought switch boxes, optical audio cables, and even long runs of HDMI (which apparently need to be very high quality to prevent problems), and they all were extremely high quality. Their quality to price ratio is insane.

And as mentioned above, don’t spend any more than a few bucks for an HDMI cable.

I didn't catch this yesterday, but Verizon is adding a $2 fee for single bill payments via online or phone

Link

I was ready to slam them until I found out that AutoPay is exempt from the fee. It’s only for people who pay bill by bill. So now I’m in the “I’m fine with it” category since I generally support companies charging a la carte style in the hopes of keeping of the base price lower

by Matthew on Dec 30, 2011 12:29 PM PST reply actions

I love when this happens

Company: “We are implementing a new fee.”
Customers: “Boooo!”
Company: “We are no longer implementing a new fee.”

As someone that works for a bank and understands the allure and necessity of fee income, I don’t begrudge companies from charging such fees; it’s calling them “convenience charges” that really aggravates me. These fees are usually attached to a process that typically reduces overhead costs, e.g. online payments. Paying a bill in person at a store? Yeah, slap a “convenience charge” fee on that.

by ThomasG on Dec 30, 2011 12:57 PM PST up reply actions

I just find the arrogance of a company charging you a fee so you can pay them another fee breathtaking

and I’m a Verizon customer. I am all for companies making a profit, but when they start charging what my wife calls “fuck you fees”, I really start to lose it.

by pdb on Dec 30, 2011 1:20 PM PST up reply actions   2 recs

I see it as a company saying

“We’d really prefer people pay their bills in these other ways so lets add a disincentive to paying this way.” Usually because “this way” costs the company some overhead or something. Since there was a rather easy way (AutoPay for one) to avoid the fee, I don’t see it as a fuck you fee.

Or, to turn it around, Verizon probably incurs some costs unique to handling/supporting bill to bill online payments. With no fee attached to paying that way, those costs are currently spread out among all customers. In other words, my bill is minusculely higher because Verizon has to cover those costs through other means. I’m in effect subsidizing others.

by Matthew on Dec 30, 2011 1:55 PM PST up reply actions

For most companies, the costs associated with automated ACH transactions and manual electronic payments is negligible since both are processed similarly.

If there is a difference in overhead costs, it’s usually in the tracking of manual payments. Most well-run companies have their own automatic reconciliation processing in place which obviously doesn’t cost as much as paying someone to do a manual reconciliation.

The true benefit to companies in autopayments is that it significantly reduces the average collection period since the company now has the authorization to take the payment when due instead of waiting for you to get off your ass and make the payment.

by ThomasG on Dec 30, 2011 2:11 PM PST up reply actions

I don't mind companies building that fee into their pricing.

However, if they want to do it that way, the company should be up front about it. Geico gave me the base cost of the policy and then what it would cost to have different payment schedules.

Don’t start charging me an additional fee after I’ve already signed up for your service because upper level management just figured out the Accounts Receivable Department spends a lot of money on employee salaries to process the inbound money.

I guess that's fair, if you're liable to forget to pay the bill

There’s also the psychological thing where you spend more if you don’t explicitly pay- I don’t have that problem so I don’t know how it works, but I guess it’s a thing.

I guess different things work for different people, obviously. I think I can understand at this point requiring online payment- maybe charging extra to mail in a check- the internet is widespread enough and accessible enough in this country that that shouldn’t be a problem, but at this point I don’t see where it makes senses to essentially force a person to hand over the keys to their bank account (for those without credit cards).

Maybe in the future, but I don’t know that we’re quite there yet.

Oh hey, I didn't realize there was an ACH exception- which pretty much covers those paying without a credit card and paying online

I would still have been liable for the charge- my general bill paying process is :

1) Get email saying I have a bill due
2) Promptly get on internet, review bill ,charge to credit card
3) Pay credit card bill

but at this point I only do the second step for the card rewards- I could easily have just paid straight out of checking (and I would hope most people charging their phone bills can), so maybe it’s not as big a deal as I thought.

I had this same concern when I first started using autopay

But thankfully, I just happen to have it setup where all my bills get taken out within the same period of the month, so while I still check the bill every month, I’ve also gotten into the habit of checking the bills against my bank statement at the same time every month to make sure everything matches up.

But at this point, every single bill I have with the exception of rent and the PUD bill(and that’s just because GHPUD’s website doesn’t offer autopay on their site yet) is autopay.

The current trend of fee assessment is pretty absurd.

Before, fees were mostly assessed to offset any kind of post-production increase in cost to the company (e.g. shipping & handling and payment processing fees). Nowadays fees are seen as a legitimate way to augment revenue streams, mostly to ludicrous proportions, since most fees are charged well in excess of the costs associated with them. ATM fees are a great example of this. Foreign ATM transaction often cost a few cents to process for the banks involved yet banks will charge upwards of a $5 fee (at least around here) for such a transaction.

I do know that I for damn sure am getting into a league next year. But the fantasy football aspect is really just the glue that holds the characters together and plays a very secondary role to the show.

by the other side on Jan 4, 2012 1:06 AM PST up reply actions

I know people that don't even watch football that like the show

but I do think a cursory amount of fantasy sports experience helps make the show just a little more relatable.

It is kind of weird that one character’s wife is another character’s real life wife though.

Funny, I loved the first season and then started hating it but it's been saved for me by a character I used to hate...

Raffi (or however you spell it)

I HATED this guy when he first came on the show (one of the reasons I started to dislike the show) but he’s the saving grace in this season. He’s so weird and says so many inappropriate things but not done in a way of “oh haha dick humor!” like what they started with… it’s just.. I don’t know.. he’s the only funny part of the show to me now and I’ll just watch it for him.

And speaking of Whedon, an interesting interview with The AV Club

Link

My favorite bit: the explanation for what happened with that freaking awful Storm line

O: It’s funny that the only lines I really remember from that movie are that one and Storm’s toad comment.

JW: Okay, which was also mine, and that’s the interesting thing. Everybody remembers that as the worst line ever written, but the thing about that is, it was supposed to be delivered as completely offhand. [Adopts casual, bored tone.] “You know what happens when a toad gets hit by lightning?” Then, after he gets electrocuted, “Ahhh, pretty much the same thing that happens to anything else.” But Halle Berry said it like she was Desdemona. [Strident, ringing voice.] “The same thing that happens to everything eeelse!” That’s the thing that makes you go crazy. At least “You’re a dick” got delivered right. The worst thing about these things is that, when the actors say it wrong, it makes the writer look stupid. People assume that the line… I listened to half the dialogue in Alien 4, and I’m like, “That’s idiotic,” because of the way it was said. And nobody knows that. Nobody ever gets that. They say, “That was a stupid script,” which is the worst pain in the world.

I can only imagine the rage blackouts experienced by Steelers fans last night....and I LOVE it.

Not only did Tebow beat them, but he broke the PASSING yards record for a rookie’s first post-season game, previously held by John Elway. Tim Tebow broke a passing record against the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. What a country!

PS: obligatory Fuck the Steelers

by sanford_and_son on Jan 9, 2012 11:42 AM PST up reply actions

He is only succeeding due to his defense and his play-makers at WR taking advantage of the few accurate passes they do get.

His ability to MISS wide open players 10-20 yards downfield is remarkable.

The game-winning throw was a 15-20 yard slant that he surprisingly threw accurately. The IDIOTIC defensive call from Pittsburgh, along with Thomas’ strength after the catch is what won the game. But the media will once again blow Tebow. Whatever. I’m just glad the Steelers will be working on their golf swings this upcoming weekend.

I don't get why people hate Tebow only because he's not a very good passer.

I mean, he’s not the one that hypes himself. And his popularity isn’t only the media… he’s the highest selling jersey, and the top two Google searches today were “Tebow” and “Tim Tebow” The media HAS to talk about him and beyond that, almost anything anybody talks about in regards to Tebow is how bad of a passer he is.

Not that you hate him, only the media blowing him, but it’s just very curious.

Whatever it was that got him into the position he is in now, doesn't change the fact that the media can't not talk about Tebow if they want to have ratings/make money.

Tebow was a deserving college football star. He might not be a deserving NFL star, but that’s what he is now and that’s what he’ll be tomorrow. “He’s a winner” may not hold any real value, but it will be what we hear until the Broncos go 3-13 and maybe that happens next year.

I think it's good for the NFL that there's Tebow.

He’s pretty obviously one of the top 25 QBs around, so he’s basically guaranteed to start for someone, even though his ‘traditional’ QB skills aren’t great.

M's fan newly relocated to SF My homepage

by lailaihei on Jan 9, 2012 12:01 PM PST up reply actions

I'd agree he has a place in the NFL..but he's not an NFL quarterback, regardless of his fluky success. (I'm not buying the 'he's changing the definition of NFL QB)

His critics are accurate when they discuss his horrible throwing motion, his wild inaccuracy, and inability to even throw a 20 yard pass within 10 feet of the intended receiver.

I will admit. He’s the best 46% completion percentage passer I’ve ever seen (because they don’t last)

I wish the media would stop tripping over themselves going after the crtics of Tebow. HEY LOOK….TEBOW JUST WINS! Instead, I only wish they’d write a thoughtful column about the other 21 starters that allow a shitty QB to have opportunities to not suck on every play. That’d be refreshing.

I fucking hate you Mariners

by kentroyals5 on Jan 9, 2012 12:16 PM PST up reply actions

If he's the 30th best passer, and blows all other QBs out of the water with the run game, then he's going to be a starting NFL QB for a few years.

He’s not changing any definitions, just showing that with good enough secondary skills, someone can overcome being a bad (relative to other NFL QBs) passer. Including his postseason game, his yardage per passing attempt is not great, but not pitiful.

Had enough Prince talk yet? Of course you haven't!
ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick was told that talk about Prince Fielder signing with Seattle is “extremely overblown.”
Crasnick’s source, an agent in the baseball industry, said the Mariners only have around $3-$4 million left in their offseason budget. Fielder has struggled to find a contract to his desire this winter despite owning a .929 career OPS and batting .299/.415/.566 with 38 homers and 120 RBI in 162 games last year for the Brewers. He could remain a free agent well into this month.

by Goose on Jan 10, 2012 12:42 PM PST reply actions

Very reasonable argument. Scott Boras would have no reason to push negotiations while he still sees the Rangers as a potential destination, even though it seems highly unlikely that they won't sign Darvish.

I wonder how unlikely a three-year deal would be, the closer we get to Spring Training. Not just for the Mariners, but for any team and Prince Fielder. It seems like there’s a potential win-win if Fielder gets the per-year salary he wants and an opportunity to sign another huge deal in 2014/2015.

I'll have to disagree.

Nikki (my Lab/Hound mix) is a rescue dog. She’s always just as smart (and maybe stubborn) as she needs to be. At the same time, she’s never a “problem” type dog. She never chews stuff that she isn’t supposed to. Neither does show any inclination to mess with things that aren’t hers.

Most people that see her think that she’s a puppy as she has big paws (She’s ~5 years old) or a hunting dog (she doesn’t care at all what the birds are doing). She’s just a 70 pound ball of fun and love. She wants to play. And swim. And swim. And, maybe in about 3 seconds, she might want to swim some more.

The point that I’m trying to make(probably a poor attempt) is that Nikki is a dog that has an instinctive love for people and fun. Teaching her new stuff, like shaking hands or playing dead, are pretty pointless to her. And she shows it by not caring enough to learn them.

She’ll chase a ball all day if you’re throwing it into the water. If you happen to be throwing it on grass, she’ll chase the ball, pick it up, bring it back to where you are and let go of the ball when she’s damned good and ready. As much as I have tried, I can’t get her to let the ball go, in the yard or park, like she does at the shore of a lake.

by ToddK on Jan 11, 2012 7:08 PM PST up reply actions

I was never saying that old dogs were not smart.

I was talking about building bond. I feel like if you start with a young dog you end up with a better bond in the future.

I really do love all dogs.

by InSpokane on Jan 12, 2012 12:49 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry. I really didn't do a good job of communicating my point.

In a nutshell, what I meant to say is that loyalty is not something you train into them. Dogs can be loyal or not. There is no training that can change that. You can put a dog that runs away all the time in a kennel or on a chain. Ultimately when you let them out/off they run again.

by ToddK on Jan 12, 2012 6:34 PM PST up reply actions

When I was growing up, my dad had a dog that ran away a lot.

He used to escape all the time, to the extent that everyone in the neighborhood seemed to know him before they knew us. As he got older though, the tendency diminished until it was pretty much non-existent.

“One day Perry and Caudill collaborated to steal the keys to the fireboat, which was originally intended to carry Mariner relief pitchers to the mound. “I’ll be damned if anybody’s going to come in and pitch for me riding a tugboat,” said Perry. He instituted a $100 fine for any reliever who rode in. No one did. Later, the two pitchers tried to sink the U.S.S. Mariner, a ship that rises from behind the centerfield wall to fire a cannon whenever a Mariner hits a home run, but Caudill couldn’t locate any fuses. “I think she’s unsinkable,” he reported."
