I love it.
He should work great with Olivo in a platoon, and relievers are pretty damn easy to replace.
Maybe I'm overhyping Leuke but I thought he had ace reliever potential
Jaso’s a neat piece though…I guess I like it, but barely.

I agree with him becoming amazing. But his baggage makes him super annoying in local media.
I wish him the best. I hope he becomes so good at his pitching, people move on and talk about his pitching.
I don't like it as a Rays fan
So I voted that I like it as a Mariners fan

I'm not a fan of mortgaging a piece of the future in Leuke for a small, flawed piece in the present in Jaso.
But I’m definitely a fan of getting Miguel Olivo on the bench as often as possible, and relief pitchers are pretty fungible.
Since relief pitchers can be overpaid by arbitration, even in a best case scenario, Leuke was only a value player for 4 years.
As is Jaso if he works out, yeah? So wouldn’t they both be potential players for the future?
...and now I'm here
Yup
If Lueke is going to end up being an ace closer—and that’s his best case scenario—he’s likely to be overvalued in arbitration because of the saves, and that’s going to get expensive by 2nd/3rd year of arb.
What I love about Jaso is that he’s not a one-year stop-gap. He’s similar to Chris Snyder, but has 3 more years of club control, a better fit for the park, should be relatively inexpensive, and is still young enough to have some upside. He’s not Brian McCann, but anyone hoping to acquire a McCann-type catcher without giving up anything worthwhile isn’t living in reality anyway.
Re: Mortgaging a piece of the future
The difference in age between Leuke and Jaso is one year.

I like trades that adds wins to optimistic projections for free.

The piece we sent away (Leuke) was in seemingly in danger of being dumped last year under the pressure of ownership. They managed to hold on to it and exchange it for much needed catching depth. Sounds good to me.
How sad is it that I look at Jaso's .301 wOBA from last year and think 'Hey, that's pretty good'?

Don't particularly like it
Voted ’Don’t like it’ but it’s just barely on that side from ‘neutral’ because the chances of it mattering a whit aren’t much. Jaso’s hitting numbers look like he’ll fit right in with the Mariners, and sure, I’m sure he’s a great game-caller and defensive catcher, but goodness knows what this team’s #1 weakness is. It ain’t defense.
Being that I found myself able to separate Josh Lueke the man from Josh Lueke the baseball player (to my surprise, frankly), I am a bit sorry to see him go. Yes, I know relievers are ridiculously volatile and un-projectible to any degree of reliability, but were it not for the PR shitstorm trading for him in the first place caused I felt like he could’ve been the closer for the future (which seems to be the mantle placed upon Chance Ruffin?). As it is, maybe he’ll be aces for Tampa. And maybe he’ll be dogshit. I actually would have preferred for him to maybe be dogshit for the Mariners. Again, surprises me a little.
His defense isn't great, from what I'm hearing. Probably still better than Olivo.
His skill is that he gets on base a little. If he’s near his career average offensively (I wonder how many more wins we’d have over the last two years if everyone on the team played near their career averages), he’ll be an upgrade at the plate over Olivo.
Says volumes that he's instantly one of the best catchers in the M's system
Got some depth at a position that needed it badly. Cost them next to nothing, in terms of dealing from strength in general and who they got rid of specifically. Love this trade.

Traded an expendable piece for something interesting in a position of need?
Yeah, I can get behind that.
Yea
because that was going to happen

I would have taken that in a heartbeat.

Carlos Peguero is about as likely to hit 60 home runs as Juan Pierre.

So worst case scenario he sucks as much as Miguel Olivo but costs $3 mil a year less?
Where is the “like” button?
There are two, both at the top of this page.
Though I assume you already clicked one and voted for it.

I like it,
I’m a bit bummed to hear Jaso’s mediocre-to-below-average defensive and runners-thrown-out numbers, though. It makes it easier to swallow the idea of adding little-to-no power in a lineup that badly needs it when you know he’s not a defensive liability.
But I like this a lot better than rolling the dice on Adam Moore as the backup catcher next year and he’s a player that makes sense on a lot of levels.
I like it
I think Lueke has a pretty good amount of upside but Jaso is an upgrade at a need position with lots of control left and we’re pretty well off in the reliever department probably.
I don't know yet.
I have to see how he handles Felix’s pitches in the dirt.

I'm disappointed that the team felt the need to rid itself of Josh Lueke.
Jaso’s certainly more valuable to us than Olivo is, so that part’s good, but trading Lueke away says bad things about the organization’s priorities.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
Not necessarily
If this was about PR damage control they would’ve traded him a while ago, when he was doing all that PR damage.

I think that this was a good trade based purely on the baseball ability of the players involved
even though I didn’t care much about the Lueke story, since he was a model player after arriving in Seattle, having less potential for a PR headache and a more valuable player is always going to be OK with me.

Lueke's stock has fallen a great deal in the past year
There are many more likely reasons he was traded besides that
Tell my wife... Hello.
This is the most neutral I could possibly feel about a trade, I’m pretty sure.
This deal fills my heart with neutrality.
How come you can do all this other great shit, but you can't lie the fuck down and sleep?
I like how this trade hints at the org being unsatisfied with the Olivo experience.
Now we just need to show looped Peguero finger footage to Sabean.

I like it, but I don't love it.
I can’t love any trade that’s such a small piece of the puzzle.
Jaso might be more than a 2 WAR player, but we’re getting into fantasy land to imagine the possibility. More likely, he’s a back up catcher in the long term. I will never be excited about a relief pitcher as a buy-and-hold stock.
Unfortunately, I think the big pieces of the puzzle are coming mid-season, when the M’s deal Felix for a gigantic haul. It will make me sad.
Yay vote number 2000!
Like it, for reasons that have already been mentioned above.
