Mariners and Yonder Alonso?

According to ESPN, the Reds have put Alonso on the trade block and are looking for a closer and or a starter in return. Immediately got me thinking that the M's should go after him. They have League and Vargas who seem to be a solid center of a deal for Alonso, and in my opinion it would be a smart move to look into. He is a lefty with huge potential and hitting in Safeco he should have a long strong career.

Any links confirming this?

And in the future, this kind of thing should be a Fanshot instead of a Fanpost. Unless there is an actual connection made between the player and the team the subject line should probably read “Should the Mariners go after Yonder Alonso?”

Why?

Where’s the guidelines on what makes a Fanpost or Fanshot? Where’s the guidelines on what makes an appropriate subject line? Let him call it what he wants.

Well...

There is this. From here, Rule 10:

Posting about breaking news? Link to your source and it would be best to wait until you have two independent sources to avoid jumping the gun. Note please that two reporters relying on the same source is not two sources. Furthermore, consider the source(s); are they reputable? Do not give traction to those without credibility. The internet deals in mouse clicks and people that make stuff up shouldn’t be rewarded.

He didn’t link to where he got his information. And lets address the rest of what makes it a weak fanpost. The subject line is highly misleading, that’s why it’s bad. If I click on something that says “Mariners and Yonder Alonso” I’m expecting there to be something, not some speculating that we should go after said player because he’s allegedly being shopped. Also, why should the Mariners go after him? Why would Vargas and League be centerpieces of the deal? Why would Alonso benefit from Safeco?

ThundaPC was just trying to be helpful.

There's also this.

From here:

1. If you’ve never posted here before, always lurk before posting. The “regulars” at this place have been here a long, long time, and most of them have forgotten more about baseball than you or I will ever know. I would recommend reading everything (EVERYTHING: main posts, FanPosts, FanShots, comments, everything) that’s written here for 2-3 weeks before posting, and when you do post and/or comment, try to reflect the tone of the posts/comments you’ve read over the past few months.

Why?

We already have two 1B/LF/DH types in Carp and Smoak plus god knows how many potential LF types that actually have some defensive ability.
If we’re going to go after another I’d rather have someone who’s already had success at the MLB level.

I've seen nothing tying us to Alonso. So this is kind of rosterbation-ish right now.

A few reports on the Blue Jays and A’s, though. I think the Reds turned down a deal with the A’s for a straight up trade of Andrew Bailey for Alonso. Most people are thinking that if Alonso gets dealt, it’ll be to the Rays.

So the question is basically should we go after Alonso? Like Aussie Mariner said above me, we already have a 1B/LF/DH with Carp, and Smoak is still our 1B for obvious reasons. That means you’re forcing either Carp or Alonso into LF, which is just asking for Raul Ibanez v2.0.

Carp might end up being serviceable in LF, so if that’s the case you could stick Alonso into a 1B/DH platoon with Smoak, but then you have the problem of what to do with Guti and Wells. That problem may take care of itself next season though if either one of them doesn’t return to form, or possibly the season afterward if the M’s don’t sign Ichiro to a legacy contract. That would give us an OF of Carp/Guti/Wells in 2013, with a presumable backup from the OF prospect pile or free agency.

I apologize if I’m dipping into rosterbation territory myself here. I don’t really have the motivation to do indepth analysis of this right now, because screw you I’m still on Thanksgiving break for a couple more days. Alonso’s bat definitely looks appealing right now with our line up, and what little time he’s had at the big league level has looked promising (although that is in part due to an unsustainable BABIP). I definitely wouldn’t be upset if GMZ threw together a package for him, but I also wouldn’t give up someone like Paxton for him either.

I like Alonso

but in what world is it fun to hit in Safeco, even as a lefty power bat ? I understand the Fielder talk, but why doesn’t anyone in Seattle have a little more faith in Smoak ? He was a top prospect very recently and showed serious progress this year when he wasn’t hurt.

One of them can DH.

Which means you slide Carp to LF or flip him for something else.

Yonder a 3B ?

Not really a logical choice at 3B but the Red used him there for a game or two this year. His efforts in LF made a couple of blooper highlights. A nice bat to have around for a contender but as an everyday player he may not be an upgrade over Smoak/Carp.

Agree

It was an odd one game stint with no fielding chances in 9 innings. It was hinted at for a week with reference to Alonso playing 3B in college (but never in minors). After it happened there was no further mention of him returning there. 1B is completely blocked from him by Votto and that is only his natural position. He might be worth a Niemann or Davis to TB but Cincy has high hopes for getting a bit more.
