Is it time to wage a sabermetric war on the MSM?
I will make this short and sweet. I think we here at LL and USSM agree that our words are being ignored by the MSM (mainstream media) in almost all areas. So I think it's time that we here as a readership begin waging a war on sabermetrics against the MSM.
That is, when for instance Salk talks about getting Fielder to put butts in seats, we flood the call lines explaining how that doesn't work. Or when Baker talked about not signing Fielder equals accepting mediocrity, we reply linking to Dave's article about why the reasoning is plain wrong.
I'm sick and tired of the MSM completely ignoring the sabermetric community and not even taking the time to learn about it seriously. I thought we were a more knowledgeable fanbase as a whole, and yet we can't get people here outside of our sabermetric community to recognize it.
If people like Salk and Baker can have a voice that reaches the casual fan, I say we should have one too.
It's about time we fought back. What do you think?

Exactly
If callers even make it to actually being aired on the radio. They vet calls; if you want to talk about something they don’t find interesting, or that doesn’t match the current narrative of whatever the program is, you’re not making it on air.

This is why I have never called a radio show.
They don’t want to hear my idiosyncratic opinions.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
I suspect Geoff Baker will respond to Cameron's post in the coming days.
Mike Salk is relatively friendly towards Sabermetrics; he just understands that most of his readers are not, and so he tends to avoid numbers while on radio.
A dialogue exists between the two camps. It is important to (continue to) nurture and encourage the conversation in a reasonable & respectful way.

WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!! FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT SMASH THROUGH TO VICTORY WE'LL CHEER YOU AS YOU GO OUR HONOR DEFEND SO WE'LL FIGHT TILL THE END FOR SABERMETRICS
Seriously though? No. Patience is your friend – look at the mainstream media in 2003 compared to today. It’s a process, and we’re getting there.
The best thing to do is encourage and support guys like Jeff who are knocking on mainstream’s door, as that’s what will help expedite the process.

Baker likely understands sabermetrics thoroughly but using it correctly means he can't troll the rest of the Internet.
...and now I'm here

Didn't he actually demonstrate he knew sabermetrics when he showed up back in 2006 or whenever?
Then every year after that he’s become more and more dumb and obnoxious?

"This isn’t 'sabermetrics' – this is simply being willing to deal in facts." - Dave on Star Players and Attendance
His rebuttal of Baker’s piece wasn’t really sabermetrics either.

No.
And really, we’re in good shape compared to how things used to be. The front office has a sabermetrics department while the mainstream media has at least a basic grasp of sabermetrics. Not to mention that the front office has thus far shown that it knows what it’s doing. Now try having to deal with BOTH the mainstream media and the front office being largely ignorant of sabermetrics. Forget hoping for good offseasons, we would just hope for having the least dumbest (in the case of Bavasi). As for the mainstream media? Just accept how things were run. Geoff Baker once accused fans of having an ulterior motive because we had the nerve to criticize players who sucked while rooting for good players.
We’ve come a long way, that’s for sure.
There will always be stupid people.
There are people who think that evolution isn’t real. There are people who think that white people are better than other people. There are people who think climate change isn’t happening. And there are people who think RBI and pitching wins are awesome and totally predictive stats. Just deal with it. Besides, isn’t the feeling of smug superiority enough?
If the public was into sabermetric I'm sure Salk would be all over it.
Salk isn’t a dumb a guy, and he gets that Sabermetrics has a part in baseball but the fact is the majority of fans don’t care. He’ll use some sabermetrics to help prove his point but the fact is his job is to be controversial and get people to call in. Baker on the other hand should be held to a higher standerd and to me it just seems likes Baker would rather live in another baseball city but he has a nice gig at Seattle Times and quitting that job would be foolish.
What would it be good for?
Absolutely nothing if you ask me

Sounds goddamn exhausting.
Can we do it like next month?
I am convinced that Seattle sports teams exist to make me hate Seattle sports teams.
I'm a little confused at how Salk has this reputation as a shit stirrer.
Yes, he is a radio personality so he has to take into account his audience when he talks but I’ve never listened to his show and think “Wow, Salk is off the deep end to get ratings.”
How come you can do all this other great shit, but you can't lie the fuck down and sleep?
I don't think he does it to get ratings, he just does it because he's Salk.
He just says some batshit crazy things sometimes, like the vendetta he had against Ichiro for the “sun ball” in Boston. I don’t know what he said on the radio about it, but I know he wouldn’t shut up about it on twitter.

That and some stuff about Bedard
was grating
Oh yeah, forgot about that stuff. Went and dug this up from when he called in to a a Boston radio station.

Huh, the part where he says Bedard lacks motivation was kind of harsh.
But then he pulled his punch and credits him for being good with children. So… yeah, that whole thing is a little strange
Such a war WOULD have been a good idea
But by posting this in a public forum you’ve destroyed our much-needed element of surprise, so the best course of action is to now cancel or at least postpone this campaign.
