My dad has a personal weather station that he uses at his home in Enumclaw

It’s made by a company called La Crosse, and he says they are great to work with and the unit is very easy to set-up/use. Here is a link to their “pro” equipment page, but they sell all kinds of stuff as you can see on the website.

The power went out last night for an hour and a half.

So my wife and I decided to play the game of Life. And once again I slaughtered her in it. I now stand at something like 23-0 against her in the game of life.

Anyone else have any ridiculous winning streaks in something that requires no skill?

by Scruffy Lefty on Nov 17, 2011 4:49 PM PST reply actions

I am a winning streak for the opposing team any time I attend a live game with one of my teams, which takes no skill.

Opposing teams are like 66-0 when I am in attendance. Not hyperboling either. I have never been to a game where “my” team won. You can thank me for 1-3 M’s losses per year since 1991.

Definitely the most stressful part about college.

4-month semesters where there’s always something productive you could be doing at any given time. It can create a good amount of anxiety sometimes

by bomdal on Nov 18, 2011 10:28 AM PST up reply actions

The anxiety is the worst.

It gets to the point where I’m really looking forward to dead and finals week at this time of year because at least those mean the end is near. I have one of the most important essays you write at my school I need to revise, as well as a Vector Calc and Chem exam to study for, all within the next two school weeks. Definitely not unmanageable, but at the same time it’s plenty stressful having that dangle over my head 24/7.

The mindless grind of finals studying is going to be a blessing after that.

New CBA is out.

What I’ve gathered via Twitter:
 - Bad for teams heavy on international signees, like Mariners.
 - Slotted bonus system will likely lead to more two-sport athletes turning away from baseball.
 - More strict rules on player conduct: substance abuse, tabacco use, and Twitter use.

I'm considering making a serious bike investment

hoping that winter can provide me with some more reasonable prices. But I’m new to the biking technology world having previously just re-used old mountain bikes so I’m casting here for any tips or opinions.

90% of my riding is going to be urban commuting and recreational trails. However, I’d like to have the option to take more trek-type trips doing a bicycle camping adventure that may require some unpaved and dirt tracks. Speed and/or racing is nowhere near my main concern. Based on initial investigation, I think some sort of cross or trek-style hybrid is my best fit? However, since I’m terrified of cars and mostly be doing urban riding in Seattle, I want the full suite of lights, a rack and fenders.

I won’t be taking it overseas so I think the 700c vs 26 or 27-inch wheel base is moot? And since I want some unpaved ability, is a wheel width more like 32-35mm fine? Any thoughts on brakes or gear systems? Brands? Shops?

You'll get asked more questions than you want to answer

if you call them. I have the green one, second photo down and while I don’t use it much here in the desert, it fits me like a glove when I do get on it. All I’ve purchased are their mountain bikes, but if you talk to Lee about other types of bikes, you’ll be impressed with his honesty. He either knows it or knows someone who does.

Surly Long Haul Trucker

Either that or the Cross Check. Surly make bikes that do exactly what you want – if you’re doing more trail riding you’ll probably want the Cross Check, but the LHT is a great commuter/recreational trail bike.

by pdb on Nov 26, 2011 11:28 AM PST up reply actions

Those do look good, but by serious I didn't mean $1,000 serious.

I’m too new back to the biking world to justify that. If there is a $3-500 equivalent of a Surly Cross Check (the LHT seems more overkill than I need. Even if I were touring, I wouldn’t be saddling much weight to it, I camp light), that would be stellar. So far, looking at something in the Giant brand for new while trawling around for used or clearance-priced 2011 models

by Matthew on Nov 28, 2011 11:54 AM PST up reply actions

I would also look at Trek bikes in that price range

Both Giant and Trek make really solid $500-ish bikes.

by pdb on Nov 28, 2011 11:55 AM PST up reply actions

Cool. I wish they were steel frames like Surly though. I like their idea of those.

Any thoughts on components to look for or avoid? I’ve read in a couple places that Shimano is a good brand and Alex is not.

by Matthew on Nov 28, 2011 12:11 PM PST up reply actions

I picked up a year-old Scott Sportster for 350$ very slightly used (like maybe once).

http://www.rei.com/product/809919/scott-sportster-55-bike-2011?ref=780967

It’s got slim tires on it by default, but without bringing yourself to the 500$ price point you could put on racks and some hybrid tires that would probably fit the bill. I put on a rack and pannier set that set me back 80$ total and some fenders that cost me 25 for the set.

That’s assuming of course that they make a current version of it.

No shocks, if you were looking for that, but some bouncier tires can make up for that some.

You can't go wrong with Shimano components

as with anything, the more you pay the better you get, but at the $500 price range (and I really wouldn’t go much lower than $500) you’ll probably get Shimano Sora or Altus or equivalent, depending on what bike you get – they’re lower-end for Shimano but all that means is they weigh a few grams more than their mid-level stuff. Shimano makes really good stuff.

This place has been sort of the talk of the town recently in the world of bikes

It’s in Seattle, right off the Burke Gilman Trail. The guy works out of a rental space, but it looks like a real, professional shop. It’s a one man show, and the guy is super nice. I got my bike there recently, and it takes a little bit to get done, and does take some money, but I couldn’t be more happy with the job he did. He does anything from complete bike restoration to building you a whole custom bike. I’d recommend giving it a go. Here is the website:

Anniversary ideas

My wife and I are trying to figure out ideas for a cheap, warm place to go for our anniversary. It’d be the week of Jan 7- Jan 15.

We were thinking AZ, but I really think I’d like to save that for a time when I could hunt and we could do more of the outdoors stuff in the Northern part of the state. Would Phoenix be a place you could spend a week doing day trips and the sort?

How would Vegas be for us being as we don’t gamble or drink? It looks like it’d be cheap. It’d be a short hop to Southern Utah to check out the geography. Not sure what kind of weather they have either.

Anything in Northern California or Oregon? I really don’t know what the weather’s like there that time of year, I imagine pretty cold and wet.

We’re wide open, I’d just like some ideas. Cheaper would be better, but we can afford to splurge a little if something is tempting. We’d also be willing to drive a day or so two each way, we’ve got a car that gets good mileage and we like to roadtrip.

Sorry this is so vague, kind of throwing this together last minute.

If I were you I'd stay in Flagstaff

You could do a day where you do the touristy shit and go to Sedona/Jerome (Jerome is really cool), then spend a day or two on the other side of I-17 near Payson and/or Show Low hunting, and then you’re only 2.5 hours from Southern Utah, 4 hours from Zion, and then there’s the Grand Canyon nearby too.

If you were to do Phoenix, you could do one day to Globe/Apache Reservoir (take SR 88 one way, it’s a dirt road but really scenic) area, one day to Sedona/Jerome, one or two days to Payson/Show Low, maybe one day over to the Havasu area. I’d try to base my operations further north though, as Phoenix is at the south end of the interesting stuff.

Not bad at all, compared to Montana

The high mountains are- Payson and the like could be tough, but Flagstaff shouldn’t be too bad- despite that Flagstaff is really high up, it sits in a weird climate zone with the rest of NE Arizona that doesn’t get too much snow- the mountains around Flagstaff will be snowy, and the area SE of Flagstaff will be snowy, but Flagstaff itself and the roads in and out should be fine- it’s kind of like Boise in that regard.

And while that’s obviously great, it’s probably not going to be on your exact preferred model.

Whenever I’ve bought laptops, I’ve just cruised Newegg for a while until I see a really great deal. Last one I got was a Lenovo for my wife a little over a year ago. It was $100 off, and a really high-rated model. Just took a week or two of waiting until a great deal popped up on a great laptop.

Especially on the preferred model thing, would have to compromise for a good deal. I’ve been looking off and on for about 6 months. Almost bought one last week but decided to wait to see if there was anything eye-popping today. Which there wasn’t. My company has an employee purchase plan deal with HP which is better than any of the other deals I’ve seen so I’m most likely going to do that.

Which is probably most people who watch it. Not knowing the source material I mean.

Strange though, most of the people I know who read it have more problems with it compared to the zombie virgins I know who watch it.. I just don’t like some of the changes they made, mostly some characters still being alive and vice versa. But then, the best character on the show didn’t even exist in the comic so I obviously need to clarify my criticism before airing it to others. I’ll just catch up on the book and wait for World War Z to come out.

by Craptastic-J on Nov 28, 2011 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

While ignorant of the comics, I would struggle to call it a character drama.

It has some of that, certainly, but I think that more than anything, the final scene and how it was handled in its attentions demonstrated the irrelevance of everyone (or nearly everyone) introduced this season, and considering how much of this episode was filler for the climax, I don’t know how ultimately relevant or sympathetic the first season cast is, or if the creators just want us to believe that.

Have any of you lovely people been to Puerto Vallarta?

I’ve been on one cruise in my lifetime, but it was very short. I’m about to embark on a 7 day doozy though, with 3 days in PV, and I’m pretty excited about it. Initially I wasn’t going to spend much time off the boat, since a) I’m lazy, and b) that’s where all the food is that I already paid for. But I figure we’ll get out and meander around a bit. Any suggestions on where to go? So far all we’ve done is book a zip line canopy jungle thing through the set of Predator.

After some thought I think that the move could help Community if they handle it correctly.

It’s obviously not working in the current time slot, so if they can give it a better time slot and maybe hit the marketing before starting the second half they might see some improvement in numbers. I still think they will end up with a 4th season. Sony ownership and all that. I think my main mistake here is assuming NBC has the ability to handle something correctly.

I am convinced that Seattle sports teams exist to make me hate Seattle sports teams.

It's so hard to tell with Boras clients.

Johnny Damon aside, when there doesn’t appear to be much of a market for one of his clients they still get a huge deal. I kind of doubt he ends up with 8/$200 million but all it takes is one GM or owner to freak out and believe there really is a mystery team out there and overpay. I just hope it’s not our GM.

Okay, I need to enlist the wordsmiths of LL

I’m having a serious problem remembering what I think is a simple word that seemed to just leave my brain, and I’m hoping someone can remind me of it because the fact that the word is right there on the tip of my tongue is killing me. I think the word begins with an “s,” semi-long, and has a similar meaning to commensurate. I’ve thesaurased the shit out of this and don’t see it.

If I’m giving out yearly employee bonuses, and the employee left after 8 months of the year, and I want to compensate them for those 8 months (8/12), what is the action called. Something that means “to give a proportionate amount.” I’m almost positive it starts with an “S” and isn’t an uncommon word, especially in baseball.

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Nov 29, 2011 6:09 PM PST reply actions

I don't think there is.

Prorate – to divide or assess on a fractional or proportional basis

The only reasonable fit I can think of that begins with ‘s’ is ‘share’, used as a noun. The employee’s share of the annual bonus. Even there though, it reads better as “prorated share” or “proportional share”

by Matthew on Nov 29, 2011 7:06 PM PST up reply actions

Prorate is definitely as close as I can make it, and since I had forgotten the word entirely it's possible that it didn't start with an "S."

the word “Prorate” is the exact meaning I was looking for and I couldn’t think of that word either, so I’m going to assume that’s it unless another word comes up.

...and now I'm here

by CapSea on Nov 29, 2011 7:49 PM PST up reply actions

Depreciated, maybe

Deprecated refers to software that is old and due to be retired. But I think prorated is the term he was looking for.

by pdb on Nov 30, 2011 12:32 PM PST up reply actions

It's not exclusive to software, but yes prorated seems the better fit.

In general it refers to something outdated/obsolete, like a bonus agreement that covers the wrong term I guess. Depreciated (lost value over time) could also work.. but follows a different causality logic then I was working with.

Anyway, yes, prorated.

but the Cougs will compete. There are some good players on defense, though as a whole the unit still needs a lot of improvement but are very young. Unlike Bill Doba, Paul Wulff did not leave the cupboard bare at all. Leach is coming into a good situation.

TT wasn’t a national powerhouse every year under Leach, but they went to bowl games, played exciting football, had the occasional huge upset and had a team that was usually in the upper half of their conference. Maybe nationally relevant was too strong of term, but a team like that would at least be nationally known for sustained winning.

If you ever need to rent a car or book a hotel etc, I suggest the following:
1. Find the deal you want on a third party website such as Wotif.
2. Call the place direct and ask them for a better deal if you book it direct. They’re paying some kind of commission (Wotif in Australia is 10% for example) so you can usually get a better deal.
3. This will also save you paying a booking fee (if applicable) through the third party website.

Topic: how do people handle annoyance/stress

Personally I clown around, mostly with small talk and smartass comments. Whatever it’s about usually goes by the wayside until some point is reached, then it starts to simmer with the chatter. Sometimes if it goes on long enough some kind of rant starts percolating, and if it’s delivered I attempt to make it amusing, because nobody likes a whiner. Anyone else do anything similar? Different?

by Kermit. on Dec 4, 2011 10:56 PM PST reply actions

For me, it really depends.

I generally have a very long fuse. When the fuse gets exceeded, I usually go one of two ways. I find someone/something to rant at or do something physical – typically I go for a run or beat on a heavy bag or something along those lines.

by Aussie Mariner on Dec 5, 2011 3:13 AM PST up reply actions

Your comment has led to some thoughts

Mostly, my behavior may amount to some form of adult tantrum. From what I’ve read about tantrums in children, they appear to be a form of stress release when their brains are overwhelmed. Which is why I’m calling it an adult tantrum, something catches my attention, my brain starts to dwell on it, perception functioning the way it does I start to see the behavior more frequently ( as I’m now keying on it) and then boom, rant. So the punching bag idea sounds pretty good

Honestly, I don't think it matters what you do.

As long as it makes you feel better (or at least calmer/more in control) and doesn’t hurt you or anyone else.
The bigger thing is being aware which you’re switching on to and having a coping mechanism to deal with it. Sounds like you’re in good shape.

by Aussie Mariner on Dec 6, 2011 3:00 PM PST up reply actions

It might be more of a maturation process, and my thoughts on this are still up in the air

Your comments are helpful. At the moment it’s mostly revolving around what it looks like to clown around with the sarcastic smart ass commentary at 20 something versus 30 something. Desired outcomes and how other people receive that type of behavior. Probably not that big of a deal when a person is selective with the audience.

by Kermit. on Dec 7, 2011 5:27 PM PST up reply actions

That's the other part, yeah.

For what it’s worth, I’m 31 now and I very much did the sarcastic smart ass thing for… well, most of my life (and it still creeps out now and then, but mostly in the “right” audience).

Does anyone here know if any theatre in Seattle will show the movie "Shame"?

I really want to watch that movie, but the fact that it’s NC-17 pretty much rules out the AMCs around my home neighborhood.

by Aaroniero Arruruerie on Dec 5, 2011 10:00 AM PST reply actions

Definitely one of those.

Really excited to see my first NC-17 flick in theaters. I was too young when Showgirls came out, haha. Have there been any NC-17 flicks since Showgirls, indie or otherwise? Seems like they just go with “not rated” instead.

by sanford_and_son on Dec 5, 2011 11:12 AM PST up reply actions

Bad Education was rated NC-17

but you’re right, most NC-17 eligible films just opt out of the ratings process or edit down to an R, because most of the big chain theaters won’t exhibit NC-17 films, and most major media outlets won’t advertise or even mention them.

Further bike question

for northwest (or anywhere with similar climate) urban riders, how much value would you attach to having disc brakes over pull?

by Matthew on Dec 5, 2011 11:59 AM PST reply actions

Tons

In a typical NW fall/winter, I go through at least two sets of brake pads if I commute 3-4 days a week. Road grime really chews up brake pads, and also does a number on your wheels under the brake pads as well over time. Disc brakes are more expensive up front, but they rarely need maintenance/adjustment – caliper brakes require constant adjustment as they wear – and they don’t need replacement nearly as often, and they also perform a whole lot better in wet weather.

The next time I buy a bike, it’s going to be a commuter bike with disc brakes.

by Matthew on Dec 5, 2011 3:21 PM PST up reply actions

The only bad I have ever heard about Pemco was from a friend that had them for about 6 years.

He never had any tickets until an accident one day that was his fault. They paid it but then cancelled his policy. The odd thing is that all he did was rear-end somebody at a stop light on wet pavement causing about $2000.00 worth of damage to the SUV he hit.

I don’t know if this happens to everyone they insure who has an accident, but it might be something you could ask them about.

Insurance companies are retarded

I’ve had customers say that they’ve been a 20+ year customer with State Farm, insuring their home and multiple vehicles, and after their first claim their rates go up and on a couple of occasions I’ve heard of being dropped for one single infraction in 10+ years.

Never trust an insurance company

I wish there was an equivalent of an insurance credit union.

The idea of for-profit insurance makes me incredibly cynical. I have absolutely zero faith in any insurance company to ever honestly cover me and thanks to my lifestyle, I skimp on any insurance that isn’t legally mandated.

by Matthew on Dec 5, 2011 6:21 PM PST up reply actions

That's exactly the feeling that I had after hearing about his experience.

We now legally have to have vehicle insurance (which is a good idea either way) but I think it gives the insurers too much leverage over us common folk.

by Corco on Dec 6, 2011 5:55 AM PST up reply actions

Late with this, but I'm a Pemco customer

I made my decision based both on their coverage/cost and also how easy they make the claims process. I’ve heard from customers that Geico can make claim filing and repairs a bit of a chore, whereas Pemco just makes it happen for you. From a body shop viewpoint, Pemco couldn’t be easier to deal with which, in turn, makes things a piece of cake as a policy holder trying to get repairs completed. Geico requires one of their appraisers to see the car to create an estimate and any additional supplemental damages will also need to be viewed. Waiting for an adjuster can take up to 48 hours, so a simple rear-ending accident can turn into a week or more to remedy a 3-day repair. With Pemco, you go get an estimate at the shop of your choice, they email the estimate and photos to a central office, and you’re ready for repairs to start the next day. Additional damage is called in by the shop and approved over the phone with photos to supplement if necessary.

Also, make sure you get rental car coverage. Many people choose not to spend the extra $3-$5 per month and are left in a lousy position once it comes time to get repairs done.

by tootthekazoo on Dec 5, 2011 5:52 PM PST up reply actions

Thanks.

And while the rental car coverage makes sense for people the rely on their car, I don’t.

by Matthew on Dec 5, 2011 6:18 PM PST up reply actions

Then save the couple bucks a month for the rental coverage.

Also, if you don’t have it already and are so inclined, Pemco does super-inexpensive renter’s insurance that will qualify you for a (small) discount on both your car coverage and your rental coverage. We pay just $111/year for renter’s insurance.

Long story short, choose Pemco.

by tootthekazoo on Dec 5, 2011 9:40 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I've talked with them about renter's,

but I don’t think their renter’s insurance is that relatively cheap. Geico is about the same price and offers a $100 deductible instead of a $500 one. That’s the only part I’m still deciding on; definitely switching to Pemco for auto.

Rob Neyer is apparently no longer part of the BBWAA:
Baseball Nation’s application for accreditation by BBWAA denied. We are “too new”. So I am out. Oh well. Fun while it lasted.
I learned during BBWAA meeting that SB Nation has “only been around since July.” So at least the hour was educational.
Just to be clear, the BBWAA did not kick me out. I can be an at-large member in 2012, probably. The BBWAA denied accreditation to SB Nation.

by Goose on Dec 6, 2011 8:55 AM PST reply actions

From Calcaterra:

“If for no other reason than this means that Rob Neyer and Amy K. Nelson, who have been BBWAA members for several years by virtue of their ESPN affiliation, are now officially on a one-year at-large membership. If SB Nation is not reconsidered next year, they presumably lose their ticket.”

by msb on Dec 6, 2011 9:23 AM PST up reply actions

I wonder if the 'at-large' membership was just created in order to allow Neyer and Nelson an extra year for the BBWAA to get their shit together

Not to start up the whole “bloggers v. reporters” thing again but at this point SBN is well-established enough that it should be recognized by the BBWAA, no?

by pdb on Dec 6, 2011 9:25 AM PST up reply actions

To what end though?

I just mean, what sets the standard in the difference between Jeff for example and any other SBN baseball writer? You have to work for SBN for a year? Five years? No time at all? You can be a good writer for SBN for two months or a terrible one for five years because there’s no real standard for what it takes to just be a writer?

I would have thought Neyer was well-established enough to not have to use SBN at all, but if it was just an application that said “Writer for SBN for 8 months” then of course being a member of BBWAA sounds ridiculous.

A Reyes-Rameriz-Pujols-Stanton top of the lineup is insane.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Marlins’ 10-year offer to Albert Pujols is worth over $200 million.
If there was any doubt before about Miami’s level of interest, it can be put to rest now. The Cardinals offered Pujols a nine-year deal in the range of $200 million last winter, but that was before the 2011 season was played out. They’ll undoubtedly have reservations about jumping to 10 years. It sounds as though some sort of resolution could be coming within the next day or so.

I hope people can run to the OT today and help me out on this. I have a few more days to buy a car before my rental runs out.

I’ve been procrastinating for three weeks and now I have to do SOMETHING. At first I was looking at maybe financing something but I decided that wasn’t the route for me because I am not a fancy car person. A very reliable A-B car is just fine right now.

I want to spend less than $3000. I’ll take any suggestions.

I’m looking at a 1993 Volvo 940 Turbo Wagon with 189k miles on it and if his story checks out it has a lot of new parts and was previously owned for the majority of its life by a meticulous mechanic. So IF that story checked out, any thoughts?

As a buyer of under $3k used cars and as a person that knows very little about cars, I have two suggestions.

First, take any used car to a mechanic. Second, take it to a body shop. They should tell you what type of work has been done and what needs to be done. It adds a few hours and maybe a couple hundred bucks to the vehicle, but it is worth it. I’ve been saved a couple times by this where the stories of new parts, etc. turned out to be fairy tales.

<$3000 the make and model doesn't matter

Others might disagree, but my only recommendation on that front is I’d stick to an American or Japanese brand, as cars that are only worth that much in that price range are plentiful and if/when something does break the parts will be a lot cheaper than if you have something European.

Otherwise just find the best running car you can for the money- it doesn’t matter what kind of car it is. If I were recommending something specific, I know a lot of people who have had good luck with late 90s/early 00s Ford Escorts (I’m driving one right now, in fact! I’ve put a lot of miles on it this year and it’s been a great car- people say “eh, Ford Escort”, but google actual reviews- it’s a car that has held up very well to the sands of time), and those are fairly plentiful and the ones in good condition are only worth that much.
