Mariners Will Not be Overflowing with Compensation Picks

Over this weekend, as the hours passed from a World Series sure to be remembered by many for quite some time, the baseball off-season officially got under way. Which naturally meant that we had to endure our first of the annual "Mariners don't expect to be big players" articles and also meant that certain people no longer were under Mariner control. It turns out there are four such players this year. Josh Bard, Adam Kennedy, Wily Mo Pena and Jamey Wright, all of whom began the 2011 season by signing Minor League contracts and yet ended up with the Mariners, are no longer beholden to those contracts and are free agents.

I wonder if they get to file for unemployment?

I think Josh Bard is the one who is most likely to resign.

He’s stuck it out for a while and been rewarded, and competing against Miguel Olivo, Chris Gimenez and Adam Moore should be as good an opportunity as he will find.

Doubt Kennedy will be back.

Think the other three have varying degrees of a chance depending on what Jack does in the offseason.
Gun to my head I’d say that Wright has the best chance to come back, then probably Bard and Pena.

Two out of three among Bard, Peña, and Wright ...

… but Bard and Peña, if resigned, would be on minor-lague contracts. Wright, if he returns, would receive a MLB contract.

I agree with this line of thinking...

All three should have the potential for some sort of role, even if it is just AAA depth in case of injury (Bard and Pena). I hope there is no role for Adam Kennedy.

The big-league deal for Wright is what complicates this.

Josh Bard and Wily Mo will both take minor league deals, making them, if not quite free, than close enough to it. And they will take them, because they are not likely to do better anywhere else. Wright, though, costs real money, and is coming off of a ~meh season.

Expect Adam Kennedy to continue his barnstorming tour of teams who find that signing Adam Kennedy is somehow where they’ve wound up.

Adam Kennedy, Houston Astro

He’ll never leave the AL West. At least, not for long.

I'm going to say Kennedy and Bard come back...

Kennedy because he was the first-half golden “child”, and Bard because this organization is about as thin as any in terms of MLB catcher depth.

This could end up being a ridiculous guess by the end of December given Zduriencik’s proclivity towards minor-league contracts and NRI’s, and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Tacoma’s roster looks nothing like it did at the end of last season.

I think Bard and Wright, but I'd be happy if Wily Mo was to sign as well.

Please, please, please no more Adam Kennedy. Surely we can find veteran grit somewhere else.

I just don't see the need for Kennedy.

Between Carp, Smoak, Ackley, Ryan, Seager, Luis Rodriguez, and Liddi plus an albatross we are stocked just fine. There is no need to give above replacement level money for a replacement level infielder with little to no upside.

I think it's just Wright...

but Bard might be in the mix too if we decide that Olivo is still “the guy”. I really hope the M’s upgrade there, but if the status quo remains, Bard has a chance to be the backup again and would take a deal here.

I apologize for silly netspeak

eom = end of message – on another board I frequent it is used to say – nothing more to say about this topic. Jeff, don’t ban me, please…
