OT, Oct. 24, 2011 --- Things that will never go away, Alex?

Fall is upon us (where was Summer?)  and like the annual turn of the seasons, other things seem that they will always be with us.

Road work messing up traffic.

Wet winters.

Jamie Moyer? He fully intends to pitch next year and Gillick thinks he can. What would be the book on it happening in Vegas?

Shakespeare? Whether you think he did write those plays or you don't, they still get performed-- sometimes by unexpected people. Have a production you could not believe, for the good or the bad?

Halloween? coming soon, and it will bring its usual panoply of appalling costume ideas and clever ones ...  best (or worst) costume you have ever seen, or worn?  I was fond of my Spanish Inquisition costume, because a) nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition and b) it fulfilled the 3 Essentials: you could sit wearing it, you could eat wearing it, and you could use the bathroom without getting trapped.

I full support Moyer giving baseball a shot again. Fairly doubtful that he'll be effective.

But, if that comeback ends up involving a Mariners uniform, I will be most displeased.

I'd be fine with a minor league contract/ST invite sort of deal

But otherwise I think it’d be crazy to throw guaranteed money at a 49 year old pitcher coming off Tommy John surgery. I’d like to think we learned at least a few lessons from the Ken Griffey disaster.

My hobby in Tucson where there aren't freeways which seems to cause an inordinate number of people to drive like roided out assholes

is to honk at and flip off everyone who causes congestion by pointlessly weaving around, only to get to the next light at exactly the same time as everyone else.

They usually start driving even more stupidly, and I’ve had some fun conversations with idiots rolling down their window and yelling at me, but I still haven’t caused one to have an accident, which is the objective (maybe that makes me an asshole, but whatever).

I kinda go the other route when I'm down there

and I try to make sure that I am pacing either the car in front of me or the car behind me so that there’s about a half-car-length of daylight between us – enough to give that weaving asshole the idea, but then when he charges up there, not enough room to actually do it.

It's really a weird driving dynamic down here

Because rushhour is on city streets, you have to somehow balance the need to not tailgate so you’re not constantly slamming your brakes with the need to sort of gun it to facilitate getting as many cars through the light as possible before it turns

Determined, Jonesing Commentor

by Corco on Oct 25, 2011 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

It seems dangerous- especially since the result is you can almost always turn left on a solid green, even when there are multiple turn lanes

I can think of a few situations (1st and River being the worst) where speed limits are high and sight lines aren’t that great, so you’ve got cars going 45 MPH as the light turns yellow and other cars trying to turn left in front of them.

It’s also super scary for unfamiliar drivers since there’s usually a couple second lag from green ball to red light to green arrow, and local drivers assume there will be a green arrow and get right on your ass expecting you to start turning. Or occasionally there won’t be a green arrow when everyone expects there to be (Campbell and Fort Lowell comes to mind), and you’ve got several cars trying to turn left in the middle of the intersection.

I don’t really get the point.

Litany of factors:

King county has a disproportionately high amount of college grads compared to almost all . College grads make less money now than they did 30 years ago, in real money ($1,000 inflation adjusted dollars less.) Cheap cars are hard to make go fast. I drive a 91 Subaru. I’m sorry if anyone here is stuck behind me, because there is nothing I can do to get up to speed. Absolutely nothing.

That was a facetious rationalization. Don’t take it seriously.

HAROLD REYNOLDS: Junior, what are you doing today?

KEN GRIFFEY, JR.: I’m the assistant head coach for a nine year old high powered offensive football team. My daughter plays basketball and Trey is football, so I spend most of my days going to practice. And when I’m not at practice, I go around still working with the Mariners. I go around to all the Minor League affiliates and help out the young kids, and get inside their head and have them ask me all the tough questions that they really don’t want to ask somebody that’s a coach. It goes a long way trying to help those guys out. You know, it’s my way of giving back to them. I don’t have to sit there and make the decisions who goes where. I help out everybody, just call me in the middle of the night, I’ll talk to you if you’ve got a problem. You’re not seeing the ball, you’re pulling the ball. I’m not offensive, defensive specialist, I’m an organization guy. Pitchers come, hey, how do I get this guy out? What is he doing?

There are good aspects to the newer one.

I think that all the lead-up with the initial outbreak and the push to the mall was solid, but I have certain reservations about fast zombies vs. slow zombies (slow feel more like a force of nature, whereas fast zombies it feels like more of a brawl) and liked the original Dawn for the way it worked around certain political and social themes (back in the day when Romero gave a shit about that stuff).

The original versus the remake debate (I'm not really even sure you could call it that) simply comes down to how much you appreciate politics in your horror.

2004 is a really good zombie movie, whereas the original is (I think) only really appreciated if you watch it within the context of its era. Otherwise, I think it comes off really cheesy.

Fast versus Slow debate will live on forever. My favorite zombie movies have slow zombies, but I don't have an inherent dislike of a fast zombie.

Okay goddamit let's do this

How, all of a sudden, in Walking Dead, are the zombies suddenly fast? That last scene at the school was like a zombie track meet – where the zombies used to be plodding and slow, and now all of a sudden they’re sprinters. Is that even legal by the terms of the genre?

I’m really starting to question why people like that show. And not just for that.

by pdb on Oct 25, 2011 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Did they do that? I have the first two episodes this season waiting on the DVR.

I think the first season of that show at least, was driven heavily by the zombie fad, like Hollywood telling us “You LOVE zombies now! Trust us! You DO and more than you EVER did before!”

I guess that modern seedling might have been planted by Dawn of the Dead (2004) then grown with more and more good zombie movies and then really peaked with Zombieland. But The Walking Dead sort of reminds me of The Stand in terms of tone and feeling like a TV version of something better.

Maybe World War Z will either kill or keep alive the zombie fad.

by bluemax on Oct 26, 2011 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions

Which is my whole problem with the show

I’m not at all interested in pretty much any of the survivors at this point – as mentioned last week, the fact that I can’t name more than one character’s actual name (I got Rick but only because of the mnemonic device of calling him Ranger Rick because of his hat) is a pretty damning indictment of how uninteresting most of them are.

The zombies are the best part of the show, but there’s only so many times that they can go back to the RUN FROM THE ZOMBIES well or the IT’S SAFE HERE WE CAN STAY FOR A WHILE UH OHS ZOMBIES well.

by pdb on Oct 26, 2011 10:58 AM PDT up reply actions

It was even worse reading the comic

because several of the characters were drawn too similar.

And like I said last week every plot arch in the comics was:

1. Found somewhere safe
2. Humans prove to be real monsters
3. Zombies show up so we gotta go now

If it was something like Y: The Last Man where I know it has a planned ending and its all leading somewhere then cool. But since its designed to go on indefinitely and likely never answer anything, meh.

by JY on Oct 25, 2011 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions

There was kind of an explanation for that!

Because I was watching a later airing, I got the last few minutes of their Talking Dead segment, and the creators explained that they try to adhere to mostly natural principles in how the zombies moved, i.e., more recent deaths, a little more sprightly, been around a while, little stiffer/slower. And earlier in the episode, when they were talking about having seen the blockade around the school, they talked about it being overrun as though it was a fairly recent bit of news. SO… while I have a lot of complaints usually, that one I can allow to slide.

Such a mind screw, you’re kept guessing the entire time and can’t help but feel incredibly unsettled throughout the movie. Aronofsky became my favorite director because of that film, and Natalie Portman’s performance was beyond outstanding.

I’m on the short list for a job in Chicago and I’ve never been to the city, so I’m really not sure what to expect if I get the position. The office is downtown in The Loop, but getting a 1or 2 bedroom apartment downtown is kind of pricey (plus I may spend significant chunks of the year on the road, so living really close to work isn’t that big of deal). Is anyone familiar with Chicago?

Does anyone own a Bengal cat, cheetoh, or other kitty cross-bred with a wild cat?

I honestly know very little about breeding and cats, etc.

From what I read on wikipedia, the bengal cat is relatively new breed, having to be 3 or 4 generations removed from the original cross-breed in order to be legal to own. Its a domestic feline bred with an Asian Leopard Cat.

One of my best friends had a kitty that was part bobcat.

I loved B.K. (Her name* was short for Bird Killer. She was part bobcat, after all.)

*I’d have named it “Goldthwait.”

by thehemogoblin on Oct 26, 2011 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions

My dad brought home a baby bobcat for us when I was very little.

We lived in the desert, and his mother had been hit by a truck.

He was very cute and sweet for about a month. Then…. he wasn’t. Dad pretty quickly put him back in the desert. I remember I liked feeding him though.

by royalcurve on Oct 26, 2011 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions

We used to have a cat named B.K. too!

Except his initials stood for “Broken Kitty” :(

He had been found on the side of the road and brought into my dad’s clinic. My mom and dad adopted him after he had recovered and no one claimed him after a while. That cat lived until I was at least 11 or 12, and I’m pretty sure he was there before I was born. He kicked all sorts of ass.

I would argue it would be better to do something that you like doing than something "trendy".

The point of dates (at least conventionally) is to find a compatible person to spend a good chunk of your life with. Yes, you want to impress a little and certainly make it fun, but you don’t want to get stuck bowling for the next twenty years even though you hate it because you took her there on the first date and it turns out she’s an avid bowler (and now thinks you enjoy it).

If you do decide to go for it

Dial 9-1-1 on your cellphone first but don’t hit call yet. Depending on your method, you may change your mind mid choke or mid bleed and its nice to be one button push from help.

If you succeed you won’t regret it, cause of the being dead, but just think of all the hungry, love-starved cats you would leave behind. Cats are more important than sports, and cats don’t even like sports, unless the sport involves getting high, licking butter and chasing lasers (Bowling maybe?)

In conclusion, instead of the generic emo type suicides, people should consider donating their lives to scientific research or some worthy cause. If you choose death anyways, might as well let “scientists” inject new perfumes into your bloodstream to see if they will be harmful to French streetwalkers.

Serious question, not trying to troll soccer fans at all here, but does anyone actually like the MLS playoff format?

I’m assuming there is a precedent for the total goals thing somewhere else in the world of soccer, right?

by sanford_and_son on Oct 31, 2011 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Everywhere else in the world, actually

It’s a little different elsewhere because nobody else has playoffs, but in things like cup competitions (which exist outside the structure of a league), the elimination rounds are generally home-and-away games in which total goals over both games decides the winner.

by sanford_and_son on Oct 31, 2011 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions

My biggest complaint is the idea that it sinks the entire season.

The Sounders had a tremendous regular season despite losing three really important players very early on. They won another US Open Cup. They beat Monterrey in Mexico despite Monterrey playing their starters. They advanced to the knockout round of the Champions League.

This was an awesome season. But people are going to look at it as a failure and that pisses me off.

I just tried the scotch at room temperature and with ice, it’s crazy how much of a difference ice makes.

by LeftArrow2 on Nov 2, 2011 11:26 PM PDT up reply actions

It really depends on the scotch, too.

Some take ice really well (like the sweeter Speyside and Lowland malts) while others are better taken either neat or with a small bit of water (typically stronger-flavored scotches from Islay and some from the northern Island regions).

by ThomasG on Nov 3, 2011 8:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Oban is a decent starter scotch that isn't out of this world pricey. (~$70. per bottle)

Macallan 12yr is really nice also and a bit less cost wise (~$55 )
Lagvulin is one people seem to like quite a bit. Personally I’m not much of an Islay fan but it’s ok. (~$75 )
And of course the Laphroaig which already been mentioned but get the 18 yr. (~$70)

Of course these are all middle of the road scotches that will be a bit gentler on your wallet. Of course if you don’t mind spending $150+ you could get the Macallan 18 yr which is just lovely.

by ToddK on Oct 31, 2011 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

My taste in scotch is horribly skewed as the first time I had it was Jhonnie Walker Blue Label.

Question for Portland LL'ers

I’m going to be in Portland in 2 weeks for a quick weekend stop and I could use some travelers advice. I thought I saw a topic on Portland a few weeks ago, but I couldn’t find anything with a site search. Just going to be me and the lady friend and we’ll be staying on McCormick Pier. Anything close by that you would recommend to do? Eat? See? We have a car so if you recommend something that’s a good distance away, we can also drive to it.

We’re going to spend all day Saturday exploring and hiking the gorge, Sunday to rest and maybe stop by the Woodburn Shopping Center.

by EvW on Oct 31, 2011 10:50 AM PDT reply actions

Where you're staying is at the opposite end of downtown/the Pearl from anything really

it’s not a bad area, but there’s not a lot there so you’ll need to go elsewhere. But I need more info. What do you like to eat? brewpubs, swanky restaurants, food carts? What sorts of things do you like to see?

by pdb on Oct 31, 2011 11:05 AM PDT up reply actions

For food,

I’d say that we like casual dining. Price isn’t really the issue, but we prefer more of a laid back atmosphere when we go out to eat. I have heard a lot of good things about the brewpubs, could you recommend some? We also love asian food. Any kind, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean.

We’re not big drinkers but we do like an occasional beer now and then too. Would a brewery tour be a good bet?

I think we would really just like to explore the city. Maybe find a good neighborhood or park to walk around in the evening after dinner.

by EvW on Oct 31, 2011 11:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Rogue and Deschutes are both in the Pearl District.

Split a sampler (or two) at each and then explore the neighborhood.

by Eyebrows on Oct 31, 2011 11:20 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Are you recommending a brewery tour?

Or do the breweries have restaurants or places to sample the beverages on the premises?

by EvW on Oct 31, 2011 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think there's a Rogue tour. Deschutes' main brewery is in Bend, not Portland.

These are just the brewpubs I’m talking about. Get a table, maybe some food and some samplers.

A Rogue sampler is 4 beers, but each slightly larger than the sampler of 6 at Deschutes.

by Eyebrows on Oct 31, 2011 3:35 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

My favorite brewpub in all of Portland is the New Old Lompoc on NW 23rd

It’s kind of dumpy, but the beer is fantastic (best in Portland in my opinion) and the food is good, and it does have that laid back vibe to it. Plus you can be sure you’re there before it goes away.

by pdb on Oct 31, 2011 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions

"The place to be" is highly subjective

I don’t care for the Pearl because it’s all suburban-y and full of annoying people, but there are a few decent things to do there. Lots of overpriced restaurants, some very good and some just overpriced. It’s probably worth a wander around, but there’s better neighborhoods in Portland (NW 23rd, Hawthorne, Woodstock) that get you a more representative sample of what Portland really is.

by pdb on Oct 31, 2011 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I google mapped where we are staying at yesterday,

and apparently we’re going to be right next to the Portland Union Station. Unless I’m totally reading the map wrong, that would put us pretty close to the Pearl District, correct?

by EvW on Nov 3, 2011 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions

That is correct.

You’re also right at a MAX stop (yellow/green lines) which will get you downtown or to North or East Portland. The Pearl’s a quick walk though, it’s just a few blocks from the station.

by pdb on Nov 3, 2011 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Is parking in the neighborhoods like the Pearl and NW 23rd a pain?

It’ll be the weekend and I worry a bit about parking, being unfamiliar with the area and all. Probably better to go on foot to the Pearl anyhow.

by EvW on Nov 3, 2011 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions

Unbelievably so, especially on the weekends

Imagine Capitol Hill on a Fri/Sat night. t’s really best to walk. There is also the Portland Streetcar that will take you up to 23rd, you catch it downtown a pretty quick walk or MAX from where you’re staying. But yeah, if you’re staying right by the train station it’s a really easy walk to the Pearl.

Any idea who in/around your top 10 would be if you did it right now?

and is Triunfel a prospect again, despite hitting for no power the second half of the season?

by seattlebruin on Oct 31, 2011 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions

My top 3 would probably be Hultzen, Walker, Paxton.

After that, I’m less certain. Franklin would probably have to be #4, and then Jose Campos would be #5. They could also be swapped. For 6 through 10, it would be something including Catricala, Brad Miller, Francisco Martinez, maybe Phillips Castillo and Alex Liddi, and I’d make a case for Erasmo Ramirez, but don’t know where to slot him yet. In any case, while Triunfel did work his way back onto the radar this year, I’d probably side with Erasmo first.

Bear in mind that this is all me shooting from the hip. I don’t do Top 10s as a general rule and haven’t given much thought to it.

The whole “why is this guy #9 and not #8” thing is why I hate the lists, particularly considering that being a #9 prospect is going to mean a very different thing from the Rangers, let’s say, to the Astros.

That's one of the trickiest philosophical things to balance.

If I were going strictly on ceiling, for example, I might have Guillermo Pimentel in there over Phillips Castillo because Pimentel is projected to more power and is left-handed, but Castillo has had a better performance around the same stage.

Basically, the way I approach it is that I’ll factor in ceiling, but the ceiling itself is weighted heavily with performance. Take Greg Halman as an example. He’s one of the best athletes you’ll see in the minor leagues, but his skill s are so bad that it’s hard to see him having a great deal of impact. At the same time, because he’s near-major league ready, it’s easier for him to be imagined having a major league career than a more polished, less talented guy three levels down.

I don’t know. This is probably something that I shouldn’t be posting about right as I’m heading out the door, so maybe I’ll come back to it later.

But… it seems to neglect guys that have low risk and low-to-moderate ceilings who are further down the pipeline. I don’t know why I’m even trying to figure this out right now because I sure as hell don’t have the time to implement anything.

What's an example of a low risk, low ceiling guy who's far away from the Majors?

And why would we care about such a creature? “In three years, if everything goes well, he could be a bench player!”

by Matthew on Nov 1, 2011 6:19 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

See, I knew you were going to say that.

It’s a side effect of studying this as intently. People like marc and I could spend an inordinately long time talking about a particular prospect who might end up breaking in and holding on as a bench player. After a point, you’ve seen so very much failure that this becomes something that seems exciting.

I was initially thinking more along the lines of guys like Seager and Snow ~two years ago.

But both turned out to be more than we thought they would be, so I don’t know that they’re the best examples. A more recent one might be, I don’t know, someone like Jamal Austin, who will never ever hit for power, but has good bat skills, plate discipline, and speed in the outfield and on the basepaths.

It all depends on how deep you feel like going with these things.

by JY on Nov 2, 2011 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

A lot of prospect lists go to thirty these days...

What you get by going deep however varies from one system to the next and, just like the draft, beyond a certain point every scouting report starts to read in the same way. When you start splitting hairs over some Latin American pitcher in Pulaski who has demonstrated one interesting thing, and you’re trying to differentiate him from all the others who have come through and managed one interesting thing, you’re probably in trouble.

"Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." - Samuel Beckett Mariners Minors

by JY on Nov 2, 2011 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Right, but see how you're still a bit rooted in the list mentality there?

Why 30? I’d say that writing up the same number of prospects for each team artificially makes comparing the systems more confusing.

If instead you have the venn blob style that I just half-assed above and stopped writing up once you reached players that didn’t fit into either high-ceiling or near-ready then I think you’d present a more dynamic picture of each team’s system strength.

It shouldn’t be about filling a quota of names, I think it should be about how much is worth highlighting.

by Matthew on Nov 2, 2011 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't easily avoid it...

seeing as how I’m supposedly going to take over the Future Forty one of these days. But within the span that I’ve been trying to figure it out, what the back-end of the list has looked like from one year to the next has changed drastically, which is a case for the design you suggested. At the same time, Halman, Peguero, etc have high ceilings, and are near ready, and experience has taught us that they are also terrible at baseball.

Perhaps a third circle encapsulating risk might be in order. I would also have to clearly outline what I mean by high ceiling, because there’s a difference between guys who flash all of the components from time to time, like say Erasmo Ramirez, and Danny Hultzen, who has it all going all the time.

Having a low-risk, close to majors overlap would provide a nice place to dump relievers as well.

That is such an obvious and simple way to do prospect lists, I can't believe it's not more common.

Why do we have to fill a quota, besides the fact that people absolutely LOVE lists and that the lists HAVE to have an even or round number? That’s a pretty cool idea.

I will add that MLB.com recently had a Top 10 that was horrible.

They omit 2011 draftees, near as I can figure, but their list was Walker, Paxton, Franklin, Francisco Martinez, Pimentel, Ruffin, Johermyn Chavez, Dan Cortes, Liddi, and Mauricio Robles. The top three are defensible given the parameters, but the rest …. HOW CAN YOU PUT A GUY WHO HIT .216/.312/.360 IN HIS DOUBLE-A DEBUT AND STRUCK OUT IN 24.3% OF HIS PLATE APPEARANCES IN THE TOP TEN? ARRRRRRG.

I don't know how he'll do in the majors, but I just get the feeling that Hultzen will dominate his time in the minors.

He seems like he’s really far ahead of the other guys near his age and experience, and I don’t see him having a problem at AAA. He might get shafted a little bit on some “top 100” lists, but I just feel like he’ll be an early season story for minor league dominance. I hope I am right.

Three key members of the Orix Blue Wave, including five-time batting champion Ichiro Suzuki, will work out with the Mariners for the first two weeks of spring training and participate in a handful of Cactus League games.

The Mariners have a working agreement with the Blue Wave, who play in Japan’s Pacific League. Pitchers Nobuyuki Hoshino and Nobuyuki Ebisu will in camp, but the headliner is Suzuki, such an icon in Japan that his first name is on the back of his jersey.

“He’s the Ken Griffey of Japan,” Mariner President Chuck Armstrong said. “He’s amazed he’s not mobbed when he comes here.”

Suzuki, a 25-year-old outfielder who’s no relation to Mariner reliever Mac Suzuki, has won three MVP awards and has a .350 career average.

Right now the Big Twelve has eleven members, soon to be twelve, and then to be ten. The Big Ten has twelve members. The Big East just invited a school from Idaho, (that’s only one state from the Pacific Ocean. One!) and another from Colorado.

The Southeastern Conference isn’t the worst because their biggest distance team is “only” in Texas. The Western Athletic Conference has a team in Louisiana.

If the point of conference identity is to win a mythical regional championship, and then test yourself on a national stage, then why does one of the power conferences have teams in all the time zones?

by Matthew on Nov 2, 2011 12:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah that's why I'm thinking paying him to average 2.5-3 WAR is a decent bet.

It’s hard to imagine him being below average in his current state, give his control and stuff. The upside is there for him to be one of the best pitchers in baseball five years in a row, in which case betting on him at ~$13m per year would yield huge dividends.

It's a splash, and you would hope that he derives some marginal value from being a Japanese (kinda) import

in my scenario, I don’t count the posting fee towards the contract value (since it’s a GR&A that it’s not included), so the contract is something like 5/$55 or so. Even if he’s just a two win or so guy, you hope that the value of him coming over from Japan is worth that much to the team in additional ticket/merchandise/whatever sales.

Also, he’s been so dominant in Japan that I would see his floor as being somewhere around average – if you’re only slightly overpaying for average and different, there’s a ton of upside as well which could make the contract look like a bargain, however unlikely.

So a couple of things have me nostalgic, and I saw a pretty good idea and could use some feedback.

Has anyone played a table or roleplaying game (anything from Monopoly and Risk to Warhammer to D&D) over a G+ Hangout or some other videoconferencing chat?

For table games: I’m thinking one player/third party does the moving over a camera held over the gameboard, and the rest have a camera centered on a set of dice while they’re rolling, and on their faces otherwise. (Or I guess you could have a common webpage with a dice roller, but eh)

Same idea for RP games, but maybe the extra camera is more of a map/rulebook discussion/etc camera?

The only reason I would even think of it is I only know one other person around me that has the Wheel of Time CCG, and nobody I know does Shadowrun anymore. I know people that do both, but they’re all out west.

It's hard to convince people to let you eat them if you're an asshole. - Thingray

Is this a just a one guy isn't there thing or is everybody scattered to to the four winds?

These options are mosting involving RPGs or board games. For stuff like miniture wargames I’m not sure how good that would work given the need for the person to look at multiple angles and distance eyeballing.

For option A, some of the nerd podcasts I listen to involving DnD have had decent success with setting up a camera at a good angle over the game map, and the person tells the other players what moves they want. It’s not perfect, and is subject to latency issues if you don’t have a wide enough pipe, but it’s doable.

For option B: there is a program called Maptools that people use to play games online without people having to physically be in the same area. I haven’t used it personally, but it is apparently pretty robust bordering on the “fuck there’s a lot of options,” but that can sometimes lead to it gumming up the works for no reason.

LL Gamers! Opinions needed!

So after 5+ years of waiting for a new console generation, I’ve finally decided to join this generation of console gaming. And after doing some research, and talking to friends who have both, I’m no closer to deciding between a 360 or a PS3.

by Goose on Nov 7, 2011 9:08 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

I have a 360 and I've got no complaints.

That said, I only got it because originally Ace Combat 6 wasn’t coming out on another platform.
It seems like every major game/game I’ve looked at anyway seems to come out on both the 360 and PS3.

by Aussie Mariner on Nov 8, 2011 12:56 AM PST up reply actions

Do you care about blu ray and don't already have a player? Then PS3. Online gaming important to you? Xbox 360 is better.

Overall I prefer the 360, I have all 3 current gen consoles and by far spend most of my gaming time on the 360. For my personal tastes, the exclusives and controller are better for the 360.

by Patrick Stites on Nov 8, 2011 1:09 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

I don't care about the Bluray that much, but it would be neat to have I suppose.

See here’s my internal dilemma.

One the one hand, I like the PS3 exclusives(the big one being mlb the show) a little more than the 360. But on the other hand the 360 appears to have the better online experience. But PSN is free! But PSN has had more issues! But the PS3 has better rechargeable controllers! But the 360 has better wifi!

And so on and so forth.

by Goose on Nov 8, 2011 1:48 AM PST up reply actions

XBL is a much better online experience, it's a get what you pay for thing vs the free PSN. So, both have their merits.

One of the annoying things of the PS3 controllers is that when they die, you cannot use them while recharging them, at least mine haven’t worked. With the 360, if you buy the play and charge kit, it’s no problem to plug them in and play while you charge. Also, when you turn the console off, they will continue charging until full and then stop.

If you do want a baseball game, The Show is definitely the best out there. I can’t comment on the wifi since I have only ever used it plugged in. For media streaming, my PS3 has worked a whole lot better using a free media server, vs my 360, which has had many many issues trying to get the Windows Media Center working on my Win7 PC.

by Patrick Stites on Nov 8, 2011 2:50 AM PST up reply actions

You can use a PS3 controller while it recharges.

I’ve never had a problem with it at least. I leave mine plugged in most of the time though now, cause the battery low messages are irritating in the middle of a game. I know people love XBOX live too, but I don’t have any issues with PSN. Pay $50 a year for a better experience or get by with one that works for free (When it’s not shut down of course). I’ve seen the likes list of XBOX livers and it’s nothing I would need to spend $50 on, personal preference of course.

My main reasons for choosing PS3 over 360 at the time were Bluray player and free PSN. Both of which have already been mentioned. I think all the RROD/YLOD problems have been fixed and the exclusives seem to be less and less of a factor, what with multi-platform and all. Ohhh, one other factor. If you have friends and family who mostly have one or the other and you want to play with them, think about choosing the majority, or the people you want to play with more. My circle is split with about 60% being on 360 and I can’t play with them.

by Craptastic-J on Nov 8, 2011 4:50 AM PST up reply actions

Yah, that's what I mean.

Controller run dead, plug it in and it still allows me to use it while it recharges. Do you have a 1st gen PS3 or a slim, maybe that’s the issue? I don’t remember having that issue with my fat PS3, but it’s the only thing that comes to mind right now.

by Craptastic-J on Nov 8, 2011 6:11 AM PST up reply actions

Buy the one that has more games you want to play on it.

The majority of big games will come out on both though.

If you want to play baseball though then you definitely need a PS3.

The overall differences are almost completely negligible at this point.

by Aaron Campeau on Nov 8, 2011 10:18 AM PST up reply actions

I own both

And I have not really noticed any outright deference between the two. I prefer the controllers for the Xbox, but sometimes find games cheaper for the PS3. The PS3 has an amazing blueray player (that’s why I bought it), but I have not purchased or rented a DVD for two or so years.

I say pick the one you can get the best deal on and go from there.

Fuck the Angels

by InSpokane on Nov 8, 2011 11:06 AM PST up reply actions

In the end, the only thing that was appealing to me about the 360 over the PS3 was Xbox live.

And that just wasn’t enough to overcome everything I like about the PS3. Plus, what really clinched was that the PS3 slim was $40 cheaper that the 360 slim when I went to make the purchase.

That's a bit of an understatement.

That 250GB may not be much better than the old 120GB or 60GB they used to make, but having only 4GB for offline storage isn’t enough for most people – even like myself, who thought I’d never use it.

Between XBL games and downloadable content, I’m glad I didn’t get the 4GB unit when I got my XBox. That whole 4GB would be taken up with map packs just from the various Call of Duty titles. That doesn’t even include the XBL games or the Fallout expansions I have, or the updates it wants you do download for some games.

I would argue that buying someone a 4GB console means that you are making them buy an overpriced hard drive for it down the road.

If the Mariners had wanted Thome, say as a designated hitter, they’d have needed more than the $1.25 million he signed for in Philadelphia. Need proof? A year ago, they paid Jack Cust $2.5 million

That’s… just irrelevant, Larry

Also, the Mariners can offer less money to free agents since WA has no income tax

I think that income tax point gets overlooked

Roger Clemens reportedly used that to negotiate a bigger contract with New York, his option being Texas. It’s been awhile so I can’t recall the specific numbers.

by Kermit. on Nov 8, 2011 4:40 PM PST up reply actions

In fact, couldn’t that be used to support the idea that we should be paying players less?

by d0nkey on Nov 8, 2011 4:47 PM PST up reply actions

I remember the issue coming up involving Randy Moss and the Titans.

Rarely gets mentioned involving athletes, but I think it was talked about a little with Cliff Lee’s offers this off season, with Texas having no state income tax.

by Patrick Stites on Nov 8, 2011 5:04 PM PST up reply actions

Didn't think of that angle, it makes sense

While digging around for the Roger Clemens deal, I found something that I’m not sure about. Someone thought the athletes pay income tax on the money they earn while playing games in that state (if they have an income tax). That kind of sounds reasonable, but weirdly complicated.

by Kermit. on Nov 8, 2011 7:26 PM PST up reply actions

They do

Games are work for athletes and you, everyone, is taxed on where work takes place, not where you live.

A WA income tax on visiting athletes has been floated rather recently to try and capture some revenue from players who, being part of visiting teams, likely don’t live here.

by Matthew on Nov 8, 2011 10:47 PM PST up reply actions

To implement somehting

like that it would either require 2/3rds vote of the legislature and the approval of the voters, or going through Washington initiative process. Given our current climate, I really don’t think it would have a chance in hell. So, even considering it is similar to worrying about what to do with Carp if the M’s bring in Prince Fielder.

Fuck the Angels

by InSpokane on Nov 9, 2011 10:17 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

It's actually more complicated than that because said tax would not apply to WA residents

and thus may skirt clear of the Eyman Rule (for as long as that remains on the books anyways)

by Matthew on Nov 9, 2011 10:53 AM PST up reply actions

I really don't want to get into too this too much

But, 1053 as passed by the voters covers any tax regardless of where the tax payer lives.

One idea that was floated around last legislative session was to increase the sales tax on internet sales by out of state customers. The Lieutenant Governor said that idea would be a direct violation of 1053 and would be not heard on the floor of the Senate, so the bill was never introduced.

Additionally, 1053 was crafted to prevent the legislature for overturning it after two years, like they did with 960 and many other measures.

One clever way the state could go about collecting money from players is to setup a user fee, much like they did with the Discover Pass.

An argument could be made that the players benefit form the use of a publicly owned facility, so they need to pay the people for that privilege. Not saying anyone will attempt it or if I am for or against it or if a piece of legislation could pass. I’m just trying to have fun with a silly hypothetical.

I hope I have not cross the no politics rule.

Fuck the Angels

by InSpokane on Nov 10, 2011 9:47 AM PST up reply actions

Couple things

You’re right that it does appear to cover any tax, but I’m not sure about the greater context of the RCW code it lives in. I think it’s likely that there are other code sections that deal with out-of-state visitors and what constitutes their tax responsibility. One aspect in particular that I’m thinking of is Oregon residents and WA sales tax.

While 1053 does have language in it to ensure it lives regardless of the leg’s actions on 960, I don’t read anything in there that prevents 1053 from being overturned as well. I’m not claiming it will happen, but anything can be overturned should the votes materialize.

I wonder if they could outright declare Safeco Field a state park. Bam, now they can charge user fees on it.

I don't know how long you've been a soccer fan

but in general terms, for me, the appreciation for a collared soccer shirt is a pretty handy demarcation line for long-time v. more-recent soccer fans. Most shirts in the 2000’s have been collarless, and so that’s what people have come to expect a soccer player to look like, but from the dawn of time up until the early/mid-90’s collars were pretty universal so that is what the norm looked like.

I don’t mean that as a value judgment on the length of one’s fanhood at all – it’s just a pretty easy shorthand way to tell how long someone has followed the game, in my experience anyway.

Jose Reyes has signed with the Marlins!
Jose Reyes has agreed to terms with the Miami Marlins, according to Dino Costa of SiriusXM.
Terms haven’t been disclosed, though we know Miami made a pair of large offers to Reyes and Albert Pujols over the last week. Jorge Sedano of 790 AM The Ticket in Miami reported earlier that Reyes signing with the Marlins is “almost a done deal.” Both reports haven’t been backed by the club’s beat writers — yet. Reyes was seeking a Carl Crawford-type deal (seven years, $142 million). If the reports are indeed true, Hanley Ramirez would likely shift to third base next season. Reyes is coming of an impressive .337/.384/.493 campaign with the Mets.

Jose Reyes has not signed with the Marlins!

Jose Reyes and the Marlins have not agreed to contact terms, according to Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post.
Capozzi cited a Marlins team source. Dino Costa of SiriusXM reported Sunday evening that Reyes had agreed to terms with the Marlins and Jorge Sedano of 790 AM The Ticket in Miami followed with a report that a deal was almost completed. But Capozzi is a far more reliable source. We’d expect Reyes to visit more teams before agreeing to a contract. The dynamic 28-year-old posted a .337/.384/.493 slash line in 2011 and is expected to draw a contract worth more than $100 million this winter.

I'm actually pretty bummed about this

not that the writing hasn’t been on the wall for quite some time, but you always think that two groups won’t be so bent on self-destruction as to actually eschew self-preservation in favor of it.

If they lose a season, it’s essentially the end of the NBA.

For the same reasons people watch any other sport?

Watching the best in their field compete, rooting for their team, and all that jazz?

by joof on Nov 16, 2011 12:32 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think anyone "should" care.

But they will. History from MLB, NHL, past NBA, etc have shown it. Specifically, the NHL lost a full season and is doing just fine.

It could actually end up being a good thing globally.

Basketball is big overseas and growing. In the best of world you could end up with a game focused less on the NBA and more on a FIFA style world basketball organization. Comments on FIFA management aside.

I remember reading an article not long ago saying that this meant an NL franchise was worth $50M more than an AL one.

Dumb dumb dumb. No, it’s called leverage you idiot!
Plus you could justify it as compensation for having to change your roster construction around to account for the DH.

I think I got diabetes just reading this description
To celebrate the release of Sony Pictures holiday Blockbuster animation "Arthur Christmas", Denny’s is offering children of all ages the chance to enjoy two new dishes – Arthur’s personal favorites available exclusively at Denny’s over the holiday season.

· Arthur’s Milk and Cookies Shake will have Santa hurrying down the chimney for this tasty treat. The thick hand-dipped milk shake is a delicious blend of creamy vanilla ice cream and sugar cookies, topped with whipped cream and sprinkled with sweet bits of sugar cookies.

· Arthur’s Christmas Cookie Pancakes is the dish that every kid wishes to wake up to. Three silver dollar pancakes with sugar cookies baked right in are topped with whipped cream and even more bits of sugar cookies. Served with a choice of two bacon strips or two sausage links, one egg cooked to order and a side of warm syrup.

Ye gods.

Post-First-Day Kindle Fire Review

Pros:

  • Nice look/feel/weight – love the 7" form factor
  • Browsing is smooth and easy, Silk on or off
  • Much like the Playbook, the screen coating that QNX uses means you can turn down the backlight pretty heavily before it loses contrast – makes it easier on the eyes when reading or using in the dark
  • The video buffers at HD quality quickly, and displays HD at least as well as the iPad 1 and the Playbook.

Cons:

  • Was hoping for an improvement in Amazon Prime browsing, especially for the Videos. The ability to playlist/“save” a set of TV shows and Movies to watch instead of having to use their crappy interface every time would be a major improvement. Even the PlayBook going through the web browser was less of a hassle.
  • Laggy around the interface in general… especially where pictures are concerned. Example – Browsing the videos would freeze for a 1/4 sec on every scroll as thumbnails loaded. Coupled with no way to browse in list mode or even show text on items as you browse, made searching for video and TV much harder than it should have been.
  • Email program isn’t that great, feels just like the iPad one – both fail massively at GMail functions, despite having dedicated GMail buttons.
  • Home page for the device is muddled, hard to browse, and scrolling through the recently used items is touchy and difficult. No ability to change it or get rid of the recent items function entirely, which would be nice. Prefer the Playbook home screen and UI much better, and that wasn’t even that great.

Summary – Nice little tablet for media consumption, can’t beat the price, but I hope they update often with new features and UI improvements, or I’ll stick with my Playbook + 2nd Gen Kindle and this thing will end up at the bottom of my technology depth chart.

Even shorter summary – Unless you really really love Amazon, wait out the cheap Playbooks on Black Friday or wait on Amazon to clean up the UI.

Thank you for this.

I’ve been thinking hard about getting a Fire. Do you have any comments about the selection of streaming with Prime as compared to say Netflix? Is it redundant if you have Netflix? I really like the price, but I think I will at least see what’s available come Black Friday.

Not sure about a library comparison, as I'm not much of a TV/Movies guy, and don't have Netflix anymore.

The playing around in the video area was more just browsing to see if there was anything I liked. I have read in multiple places that Netflix has most of the stuff Amazon has, plus a lot more that Amazon doesn’t.

This link should take you to the Prime video area, where you can look at the categories and titles available at least. Beware, as it’s a jumbled mess compared to what I remember from Netflix.

Honestly, I’m a Prime user from before any of the instant streaming stuff, when it was just free two-day shipping. I keep it mainly for that, as it saves me a couple hundred a year in shipping charges even after the 80$ that Prime costs. And with the new book “lending” feature, it’s basically paying for my Prime membership in books I would already most likely buy.

Makes sense. I am actually on my free student trial of Prime so I would be covered.

I’m looking hard at the Playbook as well and found this ad. I’m hoping there will be an online deal to go with this because there is no way I’m waiting in line for 2 days. I’m leaning Kindle, though for the reading capabilities.

It also has Dita von Teese as Gala Dali, so it’s not entirely worksafe.

I'm trying to put myself in their shoes, but it's difficult.

The way I see it, the Astros have been terrible and probably hard to watch for years now, right? Even if I irrationally LOVED NL rules, I would think the prospect of new regular opponents and a very different schedule would be exciting and would make the games a bit more watchable.

Honestly I’d be ecstatic if the M’s switched leagues. No more shitty games in Oakland.
