Frustrating, yes. But I still love 'em.
Ever since I was four months old I have been attending Mariners games. In fact I have yet to miss a Mariners home opener in my life, my hope is to continue that streak for as long as I can. No matter how bad the team is, no matter how inept they are, I will always love my Mariners. I love sitting at SafeCo Field and hanging out with my friends and family. I love watching baseball period. The history of this club will always stay with me The Double, the All-Star Game, the 116 wins and the magician known as Ichiro with his 10 straight 200+ hit seasons. All are reasons to look at the past with nostalgia, and the front office knows it.
The front office loves to bring up history, they make bobble heads and money off of that. Money that the fans would like to see be spent on a big bat. Instead we get Jack Wilson and Chone Figgins, defensive wizards to be sure, home run threats I think not. I grow frustrated with front office's bungling, it has been present long before Jack Z arrived, and wish for a front office that drafts as well as finds the free agent that won't tank upon his arrival in Seattle. Is that too much too hope for?
As for this years home opener? I'll be there, how about you?

I'm thinking of making an opening day thread soon, and maybe a spring training thread too.
As you can see from my signature, I live in the Bay Area and will most certainly be attending opening day. I’m also going down to spring training for the first weekend, and if anyone wants to get together at a game or something we can do that too.

If you don't go to El Charro, Nico's Tacos, and Casa Molina between now and then you're doing Tucson wrong
El Charro is a no-go- it's right by the now-famous Safeway which is still swarming with media/cops and I don't feel like hassling with that
I’ll hit up the other two though- I am craving a good burrito
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
The original El Charro is downtown and nowhere near NW Tucson though
311 N Court Ave. It’s awesome.
Nico’s is better for drivein, pick-up burritos, by the way.
Ooo- OK
I was unaware of the downtown one- I’ll hit that up
I’ll definitely get some Nico’s tomorrow, that sounds delicious
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
Heyyyy Tucson talk!
There is a Nico’s a block away from my office – not a lot better than a “breakfast” burrito with carne asada and guac. In fact… I am enjoying one right now!

Are they fairly consistent from location to location?
I went to the one on Campbell/Fort Lowell and it was great, but I worry with these small chains about inconsistency
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
Yep
I’ve been to the Campbell/Ft Lowell one, to one out by my sister’s new place over in NE Tucson, and at least one other that I can’t recall, and they’re all the same quality.
The secret to good Mexican food, that no place up here seems to grasp, is the homemade tortilla. Next time you’re on Campbell or in that area, go to the Bookman’s at Campbell and Grant, and outside that Bookman’s there will probably be a lady with a shopping cart (or it might be one of her kids at this point, she’s incredibly old) selling homemade tortillas, I think she sells them in quantities of 10 or 20 or something like that. Buy them. Plus, Bookman’s is awesome.
I live on Country Club and Ft Lowell, so I'm right in that area
I’ll definitely do that

I am not a mod
but I would however suggest that LL does not exist to allow people to rant without point.
And please do not use chatspeak.
If you get tuned out in person, why would you expect a different response elsewhere?
People want to read that which that provides a new point of view or new information or something entertaining. If the guy standing next to you wouldn’t care about what you are about to say, why would people on a blog? It’s no different.
I think you're getting an indifferent response because many of us aren't really understanding what it is you want to say.
Of course we all want the Mariners to be better – there’s nothing really newsworthy about that. It’s more interesting to the community if you start with a specific point that you want to make or a question you want to answer. Then you build your FanPost from that base.
Stream-of-consciousness rants that don’t have a specific point are fun to write, but they’re less fun for others to read.

I did not realize that voicing my opinion on the Mariners on the Mariners' fan site would stir up such a response
Look I am frustrated and agitated with how the front office has handled the big bat situation since 2001. It is a problem I believe that is responsible for the current situation that this ball club is in.

We understand that
but in general, FanPosts are not open-ended, vague ramblings, and they either are meant as a place to pose an answerable question for the community or present quantifiable data about something. If all you want to do is rant, there’s an Off Topic thread that, while called Off Topic, also does talk about the Mariners. FanPosts are not your, or anyone’s, personal diary space and should not be treated as such.
Wow that was an awkward first sentence
FanPosts are not open-ended, vague ramblings. They are intended to be a place to pose…etc etc etc.
Actually, the OT threads are also not your personal diary space

Not big enough!
Height=9999,width=9999!!!!
(please don’t do that)
Plus which, not to be overly pedantic
but this isn’t “The Mariners’ Fan Site”. This site has no official connection to the Mariners.
PDB does a great job outlining what you shouldn't do; let's take a look at what I hope will be helpful tips that will help you avoid experiencing this again.
The Mariners’ anemic offense and your frustration with it is an absolutely legitimate topic for a FanPost – we have had several FanPosts focus on that topic and most of those have been well-received. With a little work, you can absolutely turn a topic like this into a good FanPost. The downside to discussing a topic that has been covered extensively, though, is that you’ll want to make sure that what you have to say is truly new and interesting and not just rehashing something that’s been said many times before.
You also need to try to figure out what it is you want to say about the Mariners’ bad offense. Saying that it frustrates you is not particularly interesting to us, because we’re all frustrated by it. This would be like me telling you that I’d prefer to have another $20 bill in my pocket, or that I’d really rather be handsomer. It’s not news, and you can’t expect people to be riveted by it. If people are tuning out your sports rants, that’s why.
Is there an angle to the offense problem we haven’t considered? Can you help us think about the Mariners’ offensive woes in a new way? If you’re frustrated with the way Mariners management has mismanaged things since 2001, maybe it would be interesting to tell us what about that history was the most frustrating, or what mistakes in approach you have seen the Mariners making that you think should be reversed this off-season.
I know this sounds daunting – but by posting a FanPost, you’re essentially engaging in public speaking in front of the entire Lookout Landing community. Rants are written for your own benefit, without regard for your readers’ enjoyment; FanPosts should be written for your readers. You have to consider your audience and offer them a reason to read and to be happy they read your work.

When I post open ended fanpost it is genrally to create discussion.
What goes up must come down.
Sorry Duck fans
by Neil Vincent Roberts on Jan 12, 2011 2:19 PM PST reply actions
Rambling thoughts do not create discussion
salient points, questions or anecdotes do.
I have no desire to respond to my friend who is ranting about a random topic – I am content to let him do so in peace, nod along, and laugh or commiserate at the appropriate moments.
If you want to be taken seriously, please keep this in mind.
by seattlebruin on Jan 12, 2011 2:23 PM PST up reply actions
Please use the reply button
And what the posters here are trying to tell you is that rants do a very poor job of creating discussion.
There are no points in your fanpost that can be considered conversation starters, though, at least not in this crowd
As Chris said, coming to a Mariner fan site and posting “The Mariners are bad and it depresses me” only makes me want to nod, shrug, and say “yep” because I agree with you. That is not a discussion – I have nothing to add to that thought because it is complete. What would be more helpful in an attempt to have a discussion is, as mentioned above, an angle that people either haven’t thought of, or a new spin on an angle they have. WHY do they depress you?
The thing about LL is that we try very hard to be a place where people think about things. And communicate their thoughts in a way that prompts more thinking. This is not a typical sports team message board – you kinda gotta raise your game a little bit ’round here.

What am I missing? Why is Opening Day of baseball on a Thursday instead of the normal Sunday night/Monday?

MLB has committed to end the 2011 season before October.
There are three solutions possible that I can see.
1) Play less games in the season. This would be good for the players but would result in lost revenue for the teams.
2) Play scheduled doulble headers like they used to to get more games in a shorter period of time. This would be good for the fans but would result in lost revenue for the teams.
3) Start the season earlier in April. This is worse for the players and the fans because there will be more cold and windy games in northern cities but it results in maintaining revenue for the teams.
3 is the only option that makes any sense to Bud Selig and we know it never snows in April in Cleveland.
If they priced doubleheaders right it would offset lost revenue
Say that a normal seat in the lower outfield is $26 or whatever. For Doubleheader Days (Sunday would be great), price that ticket at $35. Increase but do not double, and people will still go.
They could also do day-night double headers where they clear the stadium, but that'd probably be annoying for staff and have a drop in attendance.
The players have always been against this.
Back in the days of the scheduled doubleheaders, the Red Sox were the last team allowed by the league to do this. They took advantage of this exception in the sixties and seventies. I doubt this exception still exists. Now day-night double headers are only used to maintain revenue for make up games.
This is a cool idea.
The players union would probably object. There are not a lot of Ernie Banks “Let’s play two” kind of players around in the 21st century.
That still seems weird.
If you back it up to that Thursday, why not just back it up 3 more days to March 28? I doubt the weather is going to be all that different. It just seems so odd to not have a Monday start. I’ve also never understood why they don’t schedule more home openers at Safeco since it’s covered.
Arizona makes too much money off Spring Training to shorten it at this point
it’s always all about money.
