Carmen Fusco to be fired at end of season, report says
Fusco was the Director of Professional Scouting for the M's, and is getting the axe in part because no one in the front office did a Google search on Josh Lueke's charges.

Someone help me out with this.
The Leuke situation is so bad that the scouting director needs to be let go.
Leuke, however, will remain on the team.
I guess I just don’t see how this makes sense.
A number of people don't seem sold on the idea that he'll remain with the team through the offseason.

Bullpens are fairly easy to restock.

It's not stupid to expect the people in charge of baseball operations to do even the most basic homework about the players they are bringing in.

I guess my issue is this:
If they fired Fusco because he didn’t tell them about the criminal record, then it was clearly a big deal. If they had known, would they have refused the deal?
I’ll phrase it differently: If it’s a big enough deal for Fusco to be gone, why is Leuke still around?
If this is true, it seems like it might be the sort of situation where SOMEONE needed to take the heat for this mess.
It is hard for me to say, as I have tried not to pay too much attention to this whole debacle. It makes me depressed and there has been too much depressing stuff about this season already.
For as smart as this front office supposedly is, this is really, really dumb.

So let see if I have this right.
- Alan Cockrell, the hitting coach, was fired because the 2010 Mariners couldn’t hit.
- Don Wakamatsu, the manager, was fired because Ken Griffey Jr. retired in a grumpy mood and took the clubhouse morale out with him.
- Carmen Fusco, the pro-scouting director, is going to be fired because the front office brought in a prospect with a criminal record that contradicted ownership’s beliefs while claiming that they “didn’t know about it.”
The front office really needs to hold a press conference at the end of the season with take-home message being “We royally fucked up this year!”

We've turned into the Mets of the AL.

So assinine...
Nobody needs to be fired over this.
Just come out and say we’ve fixed things and instituted processed to ensure we catch this stuff going forward and be done with it.
I love Jack Z, but his affinity for axing people for no good reason is rubbing me the wrong way. They need to knock of the sacrificial lamb shit.
This is one case where I'm willing to hazard a guess that it wasn't necessarily Jack Z's call

This is such horseshit
Lueke is a good player. Be happy he’s in the organization! Fusco should be getting a raise for taking a risk on somebody who by all accounts has matured as a human being since that regrettable incident, if he even had anything to do with it.

You don't hand out raises when your subordinates lie to you and make you look like an ass.
I don’t agree with how this has played out either, but get a hold of yourself.
"As long as Jack Z is safe."
This was one of my first reactions to this news. I don’t think it’s the correct way to interpret this situation (Jack Z could very well still be fired, who knows), but I am hoping that this means the owners don’t fully blame, if at all, Zduriencik for this whole Josh Lueke situation.
This situation has been blown out of proportion, and it’s all a damn shame.

They're doing everything possible to make me want to give Josh Leuke a legitimate chance, that's for sure
Maybe that’s what this is all about- a conspiracy to redirect anger at someone else so we can want Leuke to have a major league career

This literally makes the situation no better
Puts a guy out of a job, and makes the Mariners’ FO look increasingly incompetent.
Also, this really makes me think Lueke may not be with the org for long.
There's just no way to spin this as anything but horrible corporate politics.
This organization has let incidents like this one hurt their ability to win in the past, and it doesn’t look like that’s about to change.
That’s too bad. Leuke is probably our best reliever. Under club control. Cheap as free.
If I was a hungry man with a gun in my hand and some promises to keep...
Not sure if it matters if Leuke was our best reliever.
What it appears to me is that the important thing is that it appears to me that Lueke will change his behavior in the future. Yet, because of “appearances”, someone will lose their job.
IF (I repeat IF) that’s the case, that’s horrible corporate management.
This team needs help, if this decision is Armstrongs he needs therapist.

I take it most of you missed KLaw stuff about Jack Z in his last chat?
Joel (Pacific NW)
I see the Mariners going after Prince Fielder this off-season because of Jack Z’s previous connection to Milwaukee. Would Smoak and Pineda for Fielder (with a negotiating window for extension) get it done?

Let’s see if Zduriencik is still the GM in Seattle by the time we reach the hot stove season.

How thin is the ice that Jack Z is standing?

I only know what I’ve heard through the grapevine – ownership there is looking at a change. That doesn’t mean they will absolutely make one, but the Lueke fallout is still ongoing.
Jack Z is not safe and this could either be just the beginning of the house cleaning or a sacrificial lamb…

In exchange for Cliff Lee and Mark Lowe, we are getting Justin Smoak, Matt Lawson, Black Beavan, Josh Lueke, and everyone fired.

So exactly how long have clown shoes been a required dress for working in the Mariner front office.
GOD.
Even when it seems like we’ve FINALLY gotten it turned around, things fall apart on stupid shit like this.

AL Scout on Rendon: "I would peg him as a poor man's Jose Lopez."
I don't see why lying by omission is lying when the fact in question has nothing to do with his baseball abilities
It’s like firing somebody because he didn’t know that Lueke’s favorite food was Fried Chicken before trading for him.
Shouldn’t it be the job of the human resources department to run things like background checks?
