I’ve got my fingers crossed for Utley or Halladay.
My oh my, booze tastes really good at lunch!
He can't DH but it won't matter
The cross-country flight will screw up his back and land him on the DL again

I'm not to familar with NL bench construction
but does it make any sense to have a guy like Sweeney on your team if he can’t play the field?
He can PH and then get a defensive replacement subbed in for him
Basically what Thome did for the Dodgers last year in the playoffs. But it seems like to use up 2 bench players, the PH should be a better hitter than Sweeney is at this point in his career.

Once you get to the playoffs and carry fewer pitchers i
it makes sense… if that guy is Jim Thome and not Mike Sweeney. Then again Ryan Howard could still be banged uo

I think Ruben Amaro needed a babysitter.
But still, this is a hilarious trade.
Shrewd move by Amaro.
The Sweeney trade will deflect any criticism of the Howard extension because any time someone bags on the extension, Sweeney will challenge them to a fight.

What on earth? Bahahaha
Farewell, sweet, goofy prince. I hope the Phillies make it to the series now.
Milton Bradley apologist
I don't get it.
Beyond the whole, wanting to be close to family and playing on the west coast and DHing thing.

How is Geoff Baker et al still employed
We hear about these trades from national people first (Jon Morosi broke the story), the local guys are just clueless
Morosi used to work for the P-I.

That's funny
I thought beat writers were supposed to cultivate relationships with the team and it’s higher ups and report what is going on with the team. The fact that Baker and others are CONSTANTLY scooped by other people makes me wonder just how good they are at doing their jobs
by ManifestDestiny on Aug 4, 2010 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions
Morosi used to work for the Seattle P-I and probably still has connections.

So a former reporter has better connections than a current one?
That’s pretty sad
by ManifestDestiny on Aug 4, 2010 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions
Why do you think the news of this came from Seattle first and not Philly?
The Z front office has been pretty tight lipped about deals to this point. I don’t care for Baker, but this is undirected malice.
Or he has contacts with the Phillies
and the M’s FO is leak proof. Seems much more likely.

This came from Seattle
Philly beat reporters were behind the Seattle ones on twitter reporting the news

That doesn't tell you where Morosi's sources were.

It's telling that you single out Baker though
and not Stone Drayer Divish LaRue and so on. They’ve been around longer, they should have the contacts, right?
I’m getting pretty tired of the knee jerk Baker bashing on this blog. He has his limitations, he has some disagreeable stances, and he’s made some regrettable posts. So what? He’s a beat writer for a local paper, and as far as I can tell a pretty good one.
De Gutibus non disputandum est
by Bearskin Rugburn on Aug 4, 2010 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions
There are reasons
Stone broke the Silva/Bradley story in the offseason, so he gets credit. Divish is with the Tacoma News Tribue. Smaller market, smaller city, so he gets a pass. Baker is the primary beat reporter of the city’s largest newspaper covering the team, so he should be the leader/example.
by ManifestDestiny on Aug 4, 2010 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions
And Drayer? She's been here for ages and works for ESPN.
People just love to shit on Baker on LL, whether its deserved or not. It’s almost guaranteed to get a positive response, like bitching about Johnson or making a surrender pun every time Sean White enters a game. A lot of the criticism is deserved, but a lot of it is not.

Most of it's deserved.
But this isn’t such a case and nor is it really the place.

Every beat writer on earth gets scooped by Morosi and Rosenthal, because working the trade beat is pretty much all those guys do.
Who gives a shit if Baker doesn’t get the scoop on this? You’re going to hear the news within minutes anyway. I’d much rather have local journalists that focus on other stuff than wasting their time trying to win some race where no one cares about the victor.
by Teej on Aug 4, 2010 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions 6 recs
Do people REALLY care who gets the scoop first?
I mean, really?
I sure as shit don't. In fact, I take the ability to get the first scoop as a proxy for how annoying the sportswriter must be.
Rosenthal probably pesters people constantly.
I imagine him sitting in a room with the sonar tracker thing from Dark Knight, fingers hovering over a keyboard attatched to his Twitter account.
Hard work never killed nobody, but I won't take my chances.

Our bosses are just happy when some of writers acknowledge the internet's existence
As for trades with the M’s front office .. it’s very tough. THey’ve changed a lot of people so some sources are gone. And Jack doesn’t allow leaks of such information. He will not stand for such insolence.

did he get waivered at some point? Did no one but the Phillies bite? It’s odd.

Also, isn't it technically supposed to be confidental?
Sure, there are leaks, but I don’t think you’re supposed to announce who you put on waivers.
I don't think it is.
I also have heard that most teams will put most of their players on waivers and pull them back when necessary. Sometimes it’s just to see what interest there is.

Well we know he got placed on waivers, the trade could not have happened otherwise
The Mariners had to make a decision either to release Sweeney or put him on the 25-man by tomorrow, I believe. I guess they didn’t feel like bringing him back to the major league team made sense.
I believe that what we consider to be a floor may secretly be a trap door.

This is nice. We don't have to spend more at bats on someone that openly aggravates most of LL and has no future,
and Mike gets an attempt at a playoff run and a reunion with Raul from their KC days.
Fare thee well, Sweendog.

What are the chances this is a quick dump to get rid of him after his mouthiness?
The, “Oh I was never really disabled” type thing. Let him loose before he does any damage?
“Oh, sure, he can play first base.. he’s never even been hurt!”
That seems doubtful.
I’d think being out of the orginization would give Sweeney MORE freedom to talk smack about the front office, not less.

by JAH on Aug 4, 2010 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions
He wasn't talking smack at all. I think he just answered a question honestly.
But even if you buy the dubious notion of Sweeney being traded for being mouthy, he now has even less incentive to bite back any negative opinions about the M’s front office.

by JAH on Aug 4, 2010 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, what about the converse?
Sweeney is annoyed with his DL purgatory. Ms point out all teams think he’s hurt and useless. Sweeney speaks up, and suddenly an NL contender is willing to book a deal.
I’m not nearly convinced this is relevant, I’m just intrigued by the timing.
This seems excessively byzantine.

...and now I'm here
I don't really see why this is too surprising
Sweeney isn’t godawful and can hit a little still. Howard his hurt for a while. I wouldn’t want Sweeney out at 1B every day but he isn’t a butcher in the field. He’s old and holding on by a thread but he still has some power in his bat and is maybe marginally better than a replacement level 1B.
Yeah we showed him
Trade him to a contender where he might get some regular PT for a while. And don’t come back….
