I missed the last couple Music Threads...
So forgive me if I’m rehashing old discussion points here, but how good is the new Arcade Fire album?
I have only heard a few songs
but what i’ve heard i like. Modern Man being my favorite.
by Slow Country on Aug 27, 2010 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions
There seems to be a general dislike of Arcade Fire around these parts
but I personally like them a lot and think the new album is fantastic. It’s a very rewarding album too, in my experience – I’ve listened to it several times and appreciate different things each time.
You! Cake or death?
It's pretty good.
Not as good as Funeral in my opinion, but definitely better than Neon Bible.
Wow your song makes me rather sad...
This is better for a good mood: We play the music
I only know Neil Hannon
from his song with Duke Special. Gotta love Duke Special, though.
Redd Kross always puts a smile on my face
As do the Fastbacks.
In a related note, if you’re anywhere near the University of Kansas, you should check out this year’s Scion GarageFest. Last year’s was in Portland, and it was spectacular. And it’s free!
A few, I guess, depending on the genre.
Phoenix’s Everything is Everything always turns my frown upside down.

Robert Randolph, I Need More Love
Oh how could I forget my perhaps all-time favorite.
I defy to be unhappy after hearing this. Sergio Mendes and the Brazil ’66’s Mas Que Nada. Fuck the Black Eyed Peas.
Sunset Rubdown - Dragon's Lair
Wolf Parade – Dear sons and daughters of hungry ghosts
Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos – As tall as cliffs

I like your taste
I went to the Wolf Parade concert in Seattle last month. They’re fucking awesome.
Wolf Parade is ace.
I saw them at the Showbox too, great live show.

I had never heard that song, but it was a real great listen.
My go to can’t help but feel happy song is Roadrunner by The Modern Lovers. It also doubles as my favorite song in which to cruise to.

That is a really good song indeed
Have you heard the Joan Jett version? Not quite as primal but she’s another one that always makes me grin.
I love the Sex Pistols' version of The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle

Also if you have seen
this from Stranger than Fiction.

Is there any bands that you listened to in high school, that you still genuinely like their music, and regularly listen to, and not just for nostalgia?
Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins for me.

By this I assume that you mean music that was popular while we were in in high school
and not, say, a band from 1966 that I listened to in high school. The two that always leap to mind are The Replacements and Husker Du.
I have always been curious about Let's Active but never really knew much about them
point me to a good song or two!
Radiohead.
Foo Fighters
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Alice in Chains
Smashing Pumpkins
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
Metallica
That’s about it. My taste has changed a lot.

We had very similar tastes in music at one point.
I guess I still like FF, but mainly just the old stuff.
Also, I still respect the shit out of Nirvana, but don’t go out of my way anymore to listen to them.
I wasn’t in to the others until more recently…
Blur and Oasis
For me most of the popular mid-90s British stuff stands up better to repeated listening than their American counterparts for non-nostalgic reasons.
Less than Jake
Pennywise, Offspring plus all the normal stuff like Nirvana, etc.
Oh, Oasis too.
by Edgar for Pres on Aug 27, 2010 12:12 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm with you on the Pearl Jam part.
They still make good music and put on awesome shows to this day. Its a shame that most people only know them for a few songs from the early 90’s.

Soul Coughing.
Sometimes I’ll do my punk rock thing and rock to Dillinger Four or Refused.
"Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." - Samuel Beckett Mariners Minors
I think this might be the first time I've ever gotten a response on a Soul Coughing reference.
But yes, El Oso is in the same position for me.

I love the whole album.
But when I was in Jr. High and first heard Circles I couldn’t stop listening to it. I listened to Rolling a bit as well. Didn’t get to appreciate the rest of the album until much later.
by Hopefulmsfan on Aug 28, 2010 2:12 AM PDT up reply actions
I think that was the same situation most people were in.
Circles was Warner Bros. going to Doughty and saying “hey write a hit” and so he did. The rest of the album? Not much like it.
"Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." - Samuel Beckett Mariners Minors
I think that's a first that I've heard that.
I’ve followed a lot of his career though, as part of Soul Coughing, as a solo artist (first album was brilliant, subsequent albums have been met with increasing despair), and as a poet and I can kind of see it. There are some themes he’ll revisit now and then, but largely it’s silliness and nonsense for its own sake and if you expect more out of it than that, you might be in trouble. Skittish excluded, of course.
"Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." - Samuel Beckett Mariners Minors
Although in general
His songs have progressed towards not being a collection of silly words or ideas since he stopped doing drugs all the time.
"Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." - Samuel Beckett Mariners Minors
I admittedly have only listened to his stuff from the other room.
It just always felt like his songs get stuck in a loop.
Pretty much anything by the Zutons.
Particularly this song.

I admit they're a guilty pleasure band
after the one song on the MVP 05 soundtrack or whatever I grabbed a couple of their albums. I never really tell anyone I listen to them but they had some catchy songs. Its funny how different their first EP or whatever is too their break out stuff.

I don't know
Brian Wilson’s insanity is kind of neat.
by ungoreatstefan on Aug 27, 2010 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions
I may have told this story here before and if so I apologize
I saw Brian Wilson once, in 2002 in Boston, the tour was advertised as Pet Sounds in its entirety and other Pet-Sounds era songs. It was probably the saddest thing I’ve ever seen. He was led out on stage and seated behind a keyboard by another member of his band, and they launched into “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”. There was a singer on stage to cover the higher parts, which considering Brian Wilson’s age wasn’t a problem – Wilson still sang along, but once it hit the high registers this other dude took over, and was really good.
It was only after about half of “Don’t Talk” that I looked at the setup Wilson was using and noticed that nothing he was using – mic, keyboards, nothing – was plugged in. He was literally being used as a prop. I wanted to go punch the singer guy in the throat.
Brian Wilson is a broken human being, has been for years, and the every-few-years “But He’s Better Now And Isn’t That Great” is usually perpetrated by someone in his organization that needs to make a mortgage payment or something, and it’s horrible.
My dad used to take me to see them when they did the Puyallup Fair.
I don’t think I had the kind of perspective to pick up on what was going on though.
"Ever tried? Ever failed? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." - Samuel Beckett Mariners Minors
Not necessarily true.
You just have to pick through a bunch of shit to find like, maybe, one-two really good songs.
Kind of like post-Revolver Beatles.
Gah. Let me finish that thought.
I’ve been listening to Holland a lot lately. A lot of the Beach Boys’ 1970 material is pretty excellent. As ThomasG stated, once you get past their early, poppier songs about surfing, they’re a pretty amazing group.
Outside of Ackley, Smoak, Pineda, Franklin, Triunfel, Lueke, Cortes and Robles
The Mariners farm system isn’t that great
...Emphasizng that the music from those two albums is enough
to make them historically great…
/failed joke.
not that the Mariners farm system is historically great
oh never mind.
Boy, at the early part of the decade...

I don't know if anyone here is a fan
But I’ve been listening to the new Sufjan Stevens EP off and on all week. He’s always been kind of hit or miss for me but I really like this EP for some reason.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
I've never been as into Sufjan as I feel I ought to be, but I also really dig his new EP.
And he has an album coming out in October!
Yeah same I own Illinoise
and I think one other album and I find myself skipping over a lot of the tracks when they come up randomly, but this EP is just really good for some reason.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
I was pretty heavy into them for awhile
I own a lot of the gear that they wear, multiple tshirts etc. I had a friend in college who was even more into them than I and we would go and see them every time they played. I think two things made me realized I’d had to scale it back were when I got sick of hearing the same set list every show and when my friend dragged me to what was basically them playing a birthday party for one of the band members nieces in a gated community. When we showed up way before the show started while it was basically just the band members and their families I felt really awkward and said I had to not do that again.
[DELETED ZOMG NO POLITICS]
I don't know the rules about posting old or commonly known songs
but this is my favorite live performance of a song youtube…
Ragged Wood by Fleet Foxes for good mood songs.
Also Living in Colour by Frightened Rabbit.
You! Cake or death?
Tough question,
but Along the Way by Bad Religion is 1:35 to happy for me and has been for nearly 30 years.
I always forget that Bad Religion have been around that long.

They have made music as long as I have liked music and that makes me happy
I didn’t discover them until 1986 or so but still.
Yeah I'm younger but have really liked them once I found them
They are touring. SF, Portland and Seattle in mid-November I think.
by Edgar for Pres on Aug 27, 2010 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions
I will not go see them anymore because they used to be opposed to any show costing more than $20.
Now their shows are sky high in price and I lost a ton of respect for them when Brett was a junkie and Graffin turned out to be a misogynistic prick. I still love their music though.
The SF show was around $25 maybe $30 after fees
which is pretty reasonable for SF, but yeah I understand what you are saying

A friend of mine interviewed him many years ago and the way he treated her was
just awful. I did not want to believe her, but I have heard anecdotes over the years that back it up.
Ugh
I think I found that interview (or if not another interview where he was awful). He comes across as a complete slimy douche, gross.

Rick James had more than a few.
The guy just knew how to have good time! Bustin’ Out if I had to pick one to get me out of a bad mood. He also has a song that never fails to make me melancholy, Hollywood.
I don't know that is but you've reminded of Black Lace now, which is never good.

Okay, I don't mind 50s music
but I did not enjoy that at all. Still miles better than Agadoo, mind.
by Eyeball Kid on Aug 27, 2010 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions
I always have to temper my potential dislike of a lot of 50's songs
because in context, they were completely mindblowing. I like Chantilly Lace pretty well, I’ve got others that I like better, but I always think about being a 16 year old in the mid- to late-50’s and coming out of a musical era that produced nothing but smooth easy listening Peggy Lee-esque croony love songs, and then hearing that, or No Particular Place To Go, or Great Balls Of Fire, and having my mind completely blown, and that makes me love these songs all that much more.
Float On
by Modest Mouse always puts me in a good mood.
Fuck you.
No, seriously. Ever since I first heard Fuck You by Cee Lo Green last week it has been putting a smile on my face.
I can't believe I didn't like this on first listen.
The (ain’t that some shit) backing vocal is my favourite bit.

I heard it the other day and didn't think much of it either
but I just listened to the whole song all the way through uninterrupted and I am an idiot for it is awesome.
I would imagine it would automatically be a radio hit but...
How?

The radio version is "Forget You".
Doesn’t sound too bad, actually, but it obviously doesn’t have the forcefulness of Fuck You.
Yeah I heard it on the radio on Friday
it was okay, but nowhere near as good as the unedited version.

I got a promo copy of the new album...
Unfortunately it’s kind of plodding and not as good as “I Don’t Believe You” would lead you to believe. Kind of a disappointment, and I LOVE the band.
If anybody is interested in semi-obscure punk releases from the 1970s-1980s
Killed by Death Records offers free downloads of a lot of lost awesomeness from the era.
Especially awesome is Airship’s Get Out, Take Your Mother With You
Not really 'smile on your face' music
But Tom Waits’ Blood Money is better than I remember it being. Maybe it’s because I used it to escape from the FOX broadcast crew.
