Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

8/2: Open Rainiers Thread

The M's are off, so the Rainiers are on, tonight at 7pm. With Michael Pineda on the hill, and Justin Smoak, Matt Mangini, Greg Halman, and Dustin Ackley all in the lineup, there's more hope there than there is up here.

Listen in here

Gameday link here

Note that Josh Lueke should be available to throw today too after taking yesterday off.

Reno has one player in its lineup today who is younger than 26.

Does anyone else get a waiting for video message box when they click on the Tacoma audio link?

I’ve never been able to listen to the Tacoma feed but the visitors feed always works fine.

by wazzu93 on Aug 2, 2010 6:59 PM PDT reply actions

Weird.

I’ve tried the Tacoma feed half a dozen times this year and it always gives me a video message. Listening to Reno right now :(

by wazzu93 on Aug 2, 2010 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Strange

This is the first time I’ve used it. It opened up Windows Media Player and started playing audio right away. Oh the soothing voice of Curto… Is the Reno broadcast not that good?

I also am listening to Reno

because the Tacoma feed is not working for me.

For the audio feed, I get

I have the same problem.

It’s not as big of a deal, as I can just turn on a radio, but I’m glad it’s not just me. I’ll tell them about this – not sure if this is a problem with MiLB.com or the Rainiers.

Felix represents a possible win in a lost season.

Pineda represents possible future wins in possible seasons that matter.
It’s only natural to be more excited about Pineda.

by Marinerfanjake on Aug 2, 2010 7:48 PM PDT reply actions

Yes. Very.

It’s pretty damned massive. CF is 425 away and has a huge wall, so only 2 hitters have ever hit one out to CF. The alleys are deep and the weather make it really tough to hit HRs. It also increases Ks.
Every once in a while, the wind blows straight out, but unless it’s doing that, it takes work to get a home run.

Off Wilson's glove, though

Would’ve been a great catch, but it went right into the corner in foul territory.

by marc w on Aug 2, 2010 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Used to be the former, now it's more the latter.

He’s been pretty solid in the games I’ve seen. He’s got more speed than you’d expect and that helps make up for some so-so jumps. This play was just terrible luck.

He used to be known as a true defensive black hole, like Victor Diaz bad. He’s not, at least not anymore. But that’s obviously damning with very faint praise.

Yeah he seems to bear down well with runners in scoring position

Hard to say the way I’m watching but it seems like he goes for the punchout pitching up in the zone and when guys get on starts spotting his stuff down and in. Shades of young Felix.

by Marinerfanjake on Aug 2, 2010 8:08 PM PDT reply actions

Imagine the kinds of records he could set in the MLB.

On that note, what would his MLB line look like if he made 600 PAs next season?
350 Ks, 50 BBs, 20 HRs, and like a .120/.200/.400 line?

by lailaihei on Aug 2, 2010 8:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Also known as 2010 Jose Lopez.

Just as good as 2010 Jose Lopez with a .120 avg.

I just looked up Halman's birthday, wanting to be reassured that he still has a lot of time to learn restraint

He was born in August of 87, so I thought oh, whew he’s still just a kid – plenty of time. Then I remembered what year it is.

Yeah I was born in 87 too.

And, much like Halman, I too am having to deal with the fact that I may never turn into a real major league player.

It's hard with the Mariners so hopeless,

to then turn on a Tacoma game and see them losing to and forget the context. But I think they can come alive here yet.

I'll be honest, given a choice between a MLB game and a minor-league game

I’ll take the minor league game.

For the price of a seat in a ML park, you could go see a minor league game and live like a king. Better bang for the buck and a much better chance of meeting a player and chatting with them if you’ve got a seat close to the dugout.
