Its rought when Saunders needs the night off.

He is just about the only thing I still find interesting about this team.

I would say the first time was good enough

A late scratch usually indicates a minor injury.

Maybe you could give the manager the benefit of the doubt?

by Matthew on Aug 17, 2010 4:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Plus my guess would be that he would go with the guys he knows best at this point.

per Drayer

Saunders is out because the shoulder he hurt crashing into the wall two weeks ago was barking a bit after the game. He could sit tomorrow too. Langerhans was originally in the lineup to take his place but then was a late scratch. No word yet why.

by msb on Aug 17, 2010 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions

So it took two late scratches before Tui was put in LF.

Can we stop trying to kill Brown and Tui now?

"Seems to me if you bought your Sunday beer on Saturday night, this becomes a complete non-issue."

by Thingray on Aug 17, 2010 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

If Tui becomes the 25th man, that would be fine

I just don’t want to deal with the whole Willie Ballgame scenario again where he gets used as a starter.

I’d still love for him to blossom into a super utility role, 1B, 3B, RF, LF, DH, emergency 2B/SS, but I’m not sure it will ever happen at this point.

by CMC_Stags on Aug 17, 2010 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

In order to find out if he's going to blossom,

we need to play him. We suck anyway, might as well find out what we have.

Yup. They're overcomplicating the game

Plus, production/consumption seems to no longer be a viable strategy in the games I’ve played… Going for 2 six-point developments and/or goals seems to be a faster road to victory in most cases.

by NWade on Aug 17, 2010 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I still think its overrated

I’ve only played Dominion a few times; but it seems like you quickly figure out which cards are super-valuable and most of the other cards are fluff. Didn’t seem too balanced; but maybe I just didn’t play it enough.

Gimmie RFTG or Turn the Tide or something like that, when I want a quick-ish card game. Then its on to Age of Steam or Die Macher for the crunch!

Seriously, is Brandon League really having a bad season?

I know I regretted about the Morrow / League trade. But League is still a quality pitcher. Objectively speaking, how bad is his season?

by brian_sun on Aug 17, 2010 6:50 PM PDT reply actions

He's striking out 3 less batters per 9 compared to last year

Other than that (which might be a sample size issue or exacerbated by his bad stretch) he’s been okay.

by Jeff Nye on Aug 17, 2010 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Sample size issue? He's thrown 62.1 innings. That's got to be one of the most used bullpen arms in all of baseball.

His work load this year has been pretty heavy. I don’t think you can say 62.1 innings pitched in 4.5 months for a reliever is a small sample size. He’s not going to get any where near his K rate last year.

by brian_sun on Aug 17, 2010 6:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, it was a general point that you need to be cautious about sample sizes when talking about relievers.

Sorry, I should’ve pointed that out in my comment.

Less pitches/innings = less confidence in your data. That’s all I meant.

by Jeff Nye on Aug 17, 2010 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Not very bad.

Not as good as we’d hoped, but fairly good. The drop in his K rate is the only bad thing for him this year.

by c_dowley on Aug 17, 2010 7:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I agree

Regretting decisions because of how they played out is a recipe for disaster. We didn’t do anything wrong, he just achieved his potential. Expecting him to do what he has done would have been foolish.

by Edgar for Pres on Aug 17, 2010 7:06 PM PDT up reply actions

We spent the #5 pick in the first round to get him. Even if your think he wouldn't amount to

much had he stay in Seattle, you still wouldn’t trade him for a reliever + spare parts. Did you regret about the Matt Thornton trade also?

by brian_sun on Aug 17, 2010 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions

The M's didn't think his body could handle starting

In that case, the M’s then viewed it as dealing a risky RP for a somewhat known RP.

Do you regret the Thornton trade?

by c_dowley on Aug 17, 2010 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Personally, I think it would be interesting to see what people's opinions would be if

A) The Mariners didn’t stink on ice this year
B) League was pitching like the shutdown reliever we thought we were getting (i.e. actually using his splitter).

I think a lot of people are, whether consciously or not, letting their frustrations with this season as a whole leak into their discussions of that trade.

by Jeff Nye on Aug 17, 2010 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I've always loved his potential since we drafted him

But I never thought he’d get his head straight enough to become a quality major league starter.

And I’m not ready to say that he has even now until he sustains it for more than 127 freakin’ IP.

by Jeff Nye on Aug 17, 2010 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

One curiosity I've noticed on his splitter

… is that Pitch F/X seems to have reclassified it somehow. See FanGraphs:

The split-finger value this year is almost identical to the changeup value last year (and a couple of weeks ago was the exact same), and has been thrown it about half as much, which seems to more or less track with how much the naked eye would say he’s thrown it this year.

Wonder if that’s a result of his altered delivery?

Yeah, the general consensus is that they're the same pitch

I think someone said that Fangraphs was interpreting pitch F/x data a bit differently and that was the cause of the discrepancy, but I don’t remember for sure.

Makes sense

I’m not sure I’d call it a straight splitter anyways. That thing just moves weird.

That's the idea behind the pitch

They’re gripped a bit lower/higher on the seams (based mostly on preference) and thrown w/ a bit of wrist action on it. They look almost identical to a 2-seamer coming in, then dive on you.

Of course, I preferred the forkball when I pitched. Similar idea, just a bigger, harder drop. Bit harder on your arm, though.

Does anybody throw forkballs anymore

Seems like they have kind of disappeared. I always enjoyed forkballs.

I like the screwball!

Aside from the arm-destroying aspects of course.

by Jeff Nye on Aug 17, 2010 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I threw exactly one screwball

… and never did it again because it hurt to throw. The action of it was cool to watch though.

by c_dowley on Aug 17, 2010 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Don't think so

Most professional and college pitching coaches are forcing their kids that use them to stop and develop something else instead, because like I said, it’s harder on arms the way they’re usually thrown.

Mine never gave me much trouble, but it generates a lot of torque on your forearm and it adds up after awhile.

by c_dowley on Aug 17, 2010 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah. It seems for a RP though it might be worth it

It seems like a forkball thrown correctly is completely unhittable.

by Edgar for Pres on Aug 17, 2010 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I only gave up one extra base hit with mine

… and it was a homer. By Tui. That ultimately won the game for them. I was so pissed.

I wasn't that good, really

Didn’t help any that it slipped a bit coming out of my hand and hung, but still. My fastball was junk. Had to rely on a slider, change, and the forkball to get outs. Got fairly good results, but only because HS hitters have no idea what to do with a changeup or forkball.

League hasn't struck out as many batters as before, but his

WHIP actually went down this year. That’s due to the fact that he’s giving up less hits / inning while his BB / inning rate stayed about the same. So if he’s not using the splitter as much, why are the opposing hitters still not making solid contact with his pitches?

Morrow has developed from a fringe #5 starter to a #2 starter for the Blue Jays. How is that

just developed some what? Even if Brandon League turned into Mariano Rivera with the Mariners, this was still a bad trade.

by brian_sun on Aug 17, 2010 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

He was more than a fringe #5 starter here

And it wasn’t a great trade, but I don’t think Brandon Morrow would have come anywhere near success here. Might as well get the best package you can for him and wish him luck.

Some people just can’t succeed in some situations. I think Morrow is one of those people, and the Mariners are one of those situations for him.

Also...

… that’s something of results-based analysis. If Morrow flamed out/blew out his arm/did other awful things, Z gets praised for the deal instead of panned. Not aimed at you, just pointing that out in general.
