8/13: Open Game Thread
Seattle Mariners at Cleveland Indians, Aug 13, 2010 4:05 PM PDT
Look for light content this weekend, as we've got a guest in town. And it just breaks my heart that I'll be missing most of this series.
Hopefully Michael Saunders gets a chance to barrel into Chris Gimenez at some point.

I can't wait till the end of September when FSN just starts showing this instead of games.

He was advocating that because the third baseman was playing back with a rather large shift.

Wednesdays are the worrrrst
Monday and Tuesday you’re rested, Thursday and Friday you can smell the end of the week. Wednesdays have nothing going for them.

This is an interesting idea, however,
we’re doing pretty well despite the low number of base runners. According to baseball reference, we have 45 Outs on Base, which is basically any way of getting out on base besides caught stealing, picked off, or forced out as a runner, which puts us in a 4 way tie for second place in raw OOB.
Just to twist the knife, I calculated out OOB%. It is 3.6%, and leads all of major league baseball. MLB average is 2.8%
More fun with this fact.
Assume a base running out is worth -.36 runs, the approximate value of CS in the M’s run scoring environment (based on Tango’s markov calculator), the M’s have cost themselves 16.2 runs this season with base running outs, but that’s only about 4 more runs than an average team manages to botch away.
David Pauley is our starting pitcher.
No matter how many times it happens I can never believe its really true. Its like the exact opposite of how I felt when Cliff Lee would start for us.
That didn't look like a goddamn walk Loafie.
According to my calculations, your problem doesn't exist.
He is so sexy in the field though.

Can we please just let Tui or Langerhans or anybody else play 1st.
I don’t even care about the defense anymore, I can’t handle watching Kotchman bat anymore.
I see no reason for Kotchman and Lopez to be around.
We have options that would probably hit better now and might actually be around in the future.
by Fuckmikereilly on Aug 13, 2010 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions
$$$$
We save money on Smoak and Ackley leaving them in AAA for a bit. Also, I’m pretty sure that both will do well to get some continued time in AAA.
It doesn't have to be Smackley, is the thing.
Mangini, Tui, Nelson, Carp.
by Fuckmikereilly on Aug 13, 2010 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Fair enough...
You think club house support for the management could be a reason? I mean, I think Lopez’s teammates like him.
I would imagine the reason is something like this.
Being nice to Kotch and Lopez by not DFAing them, not instilling fear in a bunch of players that they’re going to get cut, letting Tacoma’s players stay for their postseason, etc.
by Fuckmikereilly on Aug 13, 2010 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm, am I being an idiot? Someone explain this play to me
B.J. Upton walked, B.J. Upton to second on pitcher J. Guthrie’s throwing error
Walk and a passed ball, which he hustled down to first and then took second?
Morgan Ensberg for Manager 2011!
Unless Guthrie picked up the ball and very clearly should have thrown him out but missed, I suppose.
Or it could just be a screwup by the Gameday thingy.
by Fuckmikereilly on Aug 13, 2010 5:43 PM PDT up reply actions
I would say Gameday screwup is far more likely
than any strange combination of baseball events that would conflate the two events together into one play.

Takes first on the walk, and notices the pitcher isn't paying attention and runs to second. Pitcher throughs it into the outfield because he has to hurry?
Morgan Ensberg for Manager 2011!
Well they changed it on gameday
It was an error on a pickoff throw.
Yeah, makes more sense now.
And this discussion was more interesting than the game at hand.

Mariners baseball!
At least what it was supposed to be at seasons start.
That is more like we are used to.
Leadoff double from the no. 9 hitter and he doesn’t score.
Is David Pauley earning himself a paycheck?
Great line today… Good ERA, for what that’s worth. If he keeps this up he may get an MLB deal going into next spring. Hopefully with another team. But still, good for him.
Perhaps we need some variation on the Putz cockpunch.

I think we've finally reached the point where a win feels exactly the same as a loss.
The only emotion I feel is relief that we are one game closer to the season ending.
I really don't want us to lose 100 games
