I have a very deep scary feeling, that the coming years(2-4), are going to be nightmares

for us.(Like not acheving NOTHING in our club history, except for having brusts of success here and there).

People thought this during 2008 and our situation was far far worse

We have Ichiro, Guti, Saunders, Smoak, Ackley, Felix, and Pineda at the very least as a core. We’ll be okay.

Yep, we have giant holes at 3B, SS, C, and at least half of our pitching staff spots, but we're not that bad.

I mean, we’ve accumulated approximately negative 7.4 WAR from certain players on the team already. If we managed replacement level performances out of those guys, our record wouldn’t look quite so bloody awful. I’m not sure how many wins the average team loses to below replacement level performance, but I doubt it has much of a year-to-year correlation, as teams tend to replace shitty players with less shitty ones.

My completely uninformed opinion concurs....

big IF, but if the young guys continue to develop there is a young core of players with a rotation of Felix, Vargas, Fister, possibly Pineda in the rotation and some of those freshly acquired arms in the bullpen. Just a question of how soon the plan comes together.

Significantly, these aren't just potentially decent players like, I dunno, Johnson or Carp

Guys like Ackley, Pineda, Smoak, and to a lesser extent Saunders – these are potential difference-makers. Good teams need a core of stars. The Mariners may be working on one.

I have no hope for Moore.

He falls into the same bin as Tui for me. I can stand seeing a guy come up and not hit as long as he fields. See, Michael Saunders from last year. And I can stand seeing a guy come up and hit, but not be able to field.

I lose all immediate hope when the prospect comes up and sucks immensely at both.

by Matthew on Jul 31, 2010 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions

No hope at all?

I don’t think Moore will be very good, but the baseline for catchers is very low.

I have zero expectation of him being a useful starter in the immediate (1-3 year) future.

This is not a rational expectation. This is entirely an emotional reaction to his 2010 performance. I won’t stop projecting him based on his scouting and numbers, but I will not believe it until I see it.

Postgame

Rizzs was trying to credit Slowey for his dominating pitching, and Neihaus would not have it— he put it all on the abysmal offense. This was followed by Pitman being surprised that Figgins was still there, if they had any kind of offer for him

Love that Niehaus is completely pissed and disgusted

He must be realizing his time on earth is coming to an end and he recognizes the Mariners will never make it to the World Series while he is alive.

It's probably worse than that.

His time as a broadcaster is getting shorter by the day and he’s spending it calling historically bad Mariner teams playing boring baseball. Lord knows how stale the rye bread and mustard are getting since there has been no reason to break them out.

Poor Dave...

He deserves better…

It is Challenger

And I have to say that its the first thing on LL that’s seemed kinda tasteless. Maybe I’m the only one; but let’s not forget that it was a violent, tragic, and fully preventable loss of life. I know what Jeff was going for, and I do truly love his work… But equating a game loss to something that caused violent death just seems a little much. Besides – on a funnier note: the M’s don’t have enough power in their lineup to cause an explosion like that! Maybe this instead ?

Funny how life/time works, eh?

I was 8 years old watching the launch live in a classroom. Remember, the first “teacher-in-space” was on that launch – so classrooms all across the country were tuned in and proud teachers everywhere were promoting the event. There were classroom activities leading up to the launch, teachers used space-themed lessons in the days/weeks leading up to the launch, etc (and I know this wasn’t just at my school, it happened all over)… Then, ka-boom. Live on TV.

Also: Makes you wonder about the kids who were 3 months old when 9/11 happened, eh? They’ll never know a world without it, yet not having lived through it at an age where they can remember and/or empathize with the people around them means that they’ll have a totally different attitude than you or I.

Totally Fine with that post, BTW...

Making fun of people’s deaths is different from being angry and wishing someone would die (especially when its known that the wish is being done for effect or for humor). shrug At least, that’s my take on it.

Still love the work you do here, Jeff!
