Does DA get dealt?
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
I don't think he does.
Z isn’t going to have any interest in selling low and every team is going to want to buy low. I don’t see it happening.

Probably not
Although they’ve been showcasing him hardcore.

Even if he does get dealt, what do you get in return?
Nothing of value unless it’s a stupid team trading for him. Maybe a few stuffed animals and a box of baseballs

Don't worry, Ludwick's awesome. You'll learn to love him.
Not quite Felix or Ichiro love, but still love nonetheless.

If I recall correctly
Cards need pitching, Ludwick is getting a raise next year, Jay/Craig is decent enough

I don't think outside of the Lee deal
they have dealt a top 20 prospect and have Lee (A), Francisco (A), Vlad (A), Oliver (A/B), Molina (A/B), Cantu (B/0) all being FA next year.
I would not be surprised to see Texas have 5 or 6 picks in the 1st and supplemental again
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
You think they're offering arbitration to all those guys?
by Jeff Sullivan on Jul 31, 2010 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions
Will definately with
Lee, Francisco
the rest are maybes. But still Lee and Francisco are potentially 4 picks plus their own.
I would rank the likelihood of offering would go like
Cantu (if he makes class B) Oliver, Molina, Vlad, Guzman (forgot about him)
Depends on what happens with the ownership situation. Would still not surprise me to see 5 or 6 picks plus their normal allotment.
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
They'll likely be exercising Vlad's option.
Molina and Cantu wouldn’t be offered arbitration. Molina made $4.5 million this year and Cantu made $6. Both would accept.
by superluminal on Jul 31, 2010 11:45 AM PDT up reply actions
Texas has not 1B or C
Texas offered Pudge last year and he declined.
Cantu might be better than what they could get on the open market.
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
and yet he is one of the better options on the 1B FA market
Berkaman maybe?

I have a strong hunch that by midnight tonight Rob Johnson will no longer be a Mariner
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
He seems like the perfect dark horse candidate
Rob Johnson for generic A+ ball middle reliever
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
This is a proper term for his play
Think there could be a promo for it one night? Rob Johnson glove night where they give each fan a catchers glove with a gigantic hole in the middle?
If the Mariners like him, I think it's plausible that other teams may like him too.
Doesn’t mean they’re smart.

Didn’t Loria “trade” for the Marlins for the Boston Red Sox somehow a while back?

Look under Florida Marlins subtopic
It was a crazy change of ownership facilitated by MLB, that more or less traded the marlins for the Red Sox. I was wrong, Loria took the Marlins. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Loria
by universalguru on Jul 31, 2010 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions
Loria is a crazy bastard. At least he finally got that new stadium he wanted.
I honestly think that the Marlins will be able to have a better draw per game there than at Dolphin/Landshark/Pro Player. It’s just too far to drive for most people to go to a game.
I wasn't arguing whether a GM trade is possible or not.
Billy Beane once almost traded himself to the Red Sox for Youk.

This is the opposite of what I'm used to seeing the Pirates do
They usually get rid of everybody with any sort of value
Its basically shit for shit
League average players at best on each side. Bobby Crosby is horrible. I wonder about Arizona’s strategy these days although it does make sense to get rid of Snyder.

Is there anyone still left on the Diamondbacks worth the M's acquiring?
Would love it if the team could take advantage of that fire sale.
I'd swap Halman or one of our AA pitchers for him.
It’s hard to see someone offering more than that, though.
It's interesting to see the kind of drop in value Drew has gone through
But I guess for a family to have one really good player, one league average player and one brother who barely made the majors, not too bad
The diamondbacks lineup is probably way better than ours.
Justin Upton
Chris Young
Kelly Johnson
Stephen Drew
Matt Renyolds
Miguel Montero
Ian Kennedy
I’d take any of those guys.

Anybody afraid GMZ's price for our RP is way too high
And we are going to lose out on any possible trades because other teams are willing to trade for less. There are only so many teams out there looking for RP and I feel like there are a lot of teams willing to trade RP.

Tacoma Rainiers.
He still has options, right?
by lailaihei on Jul 31, 2010 10:42 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Nope, he's into arbitration, and options are option YEARS, not like a set number of times you can option someone up or down.
He was brought up for the first time in ‘04, so I’m almost 100% certain he has no options.
by BrettJMiller on Jul 31, 2010 10:44 AM PDT up reply actions
He was optioned in 05 but only 05 to my knowledge
Since his contract was purchased in 04
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
So barring arbitration weirdness he should still have two option years left
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
Although I think it has been long enough since he has been optioned that the options can be used, but only with the player's consent
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
So in that case, no, he won't be optioned, because why would he accept that.
by BrettJMiller on Jul 31, 2010 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions
Probably not
Giambi agreed to be optioned to AAA Columbus in 2004 or 2005 if I recall correctly when he was deeply slumping, even after being a veteran free agent, so it isn’t unprecedented
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
Ah, wait, he obviously declined
But there was discussion of it because it was possible
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
Lopez still has less than 5 years service time so I think he can be optioned still.
by lailaihei on Jul 31, 2010 11:08 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
How is that possible?
all of 06-7-8-9, half of 2005, half of 2010, and a couple months of 2004
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
I'd be shocked if he still had options.
I don’t think they just stay there even through arbitration…pretty sure it’s not like one of those things where they stay there if you don’t use them. At a certain point I think they go away.
by BrettJMiller on Jul 31, 2010 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions
For the Mariners.
We’re not going anywhere next year, and at first glance it doesn’t appear that we will be targeting any major free agents this off season. Might as well keep Lopez around. He can man second base until we call up Ackley. And hey, if Lopez does rebound, we can flip him for something shiny come summer.
No.
He’s a pile of shit and I would rather spend the money he’d be owed if we picked up his option to have Lady Gaga sing the national anthem at every home game.
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 31, 2010 11:12 AM PDT up reply actions
Maybe she could sing the anthem at some games
and maybe she could sing Just Dance during the 7th inning stretch at others
I am with you good sir.
I see no way Jack Z picks that option up. Too expensive, bad player. I’d rather see Ackley up in April, service clock or not.
by BrettJMiller on Jul 31, 2010 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions
I realize that the odds of competing in 2011 aren't high but starting Jose Lopez next year is the definition of punting a season
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 31, 2010 11:14 AM PDT up reply actions
This is true.
I concede my argument in favor of keeping Lopez.
I dislike service time manipulation.
If the player is ready, he should be starting. And I also think there are options besides Ackley and Lopez.
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 31, 2010 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions
Lopez had a bad approach last year, but still put up a good numbers.
The only things different this season are his BABIP and ISO. It seems conceivable that he could rebound to his prior levels of production. There’s value in that.
He had a bad approach, sure, but he had something resembling hitting ability, too.
He’s done and I am tired of watching him.
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 31, 2010 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions
Yeah there is no good reason he should have just had his BABIP and ISO fall apart this year
He’s not a good player and is a disappointment compared to what I thought he was going to be when he first came up but he’s not a useless player.
by Edgar for Pres on Jul 31, 2010 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions
Disagree
And I am tired of his face and his play. I want him to go the fuck away.
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 31, 2010 11:18 AM PDT up reply actions 4 recs
I don't think ISO is really luck based. Especially when you consider his home runs were all pretty much fake home runs.
He’s crap these days…I have to agree that it’d just be a season punt if we were to play him significantly next year. I also don’t think paying him his $4.5 million option is smart at all. And I doubt he’d re-sign with us if we bought him out. Which, why would we do that anyway.

His approach looked pretty good in Texas.
I don’t get why it’d just be lost coming to Seattle…it’s just a SSS issue I think. Plus, how can he learn to hit MLB pitching in AAA? It just seems silly.

He has a fair amount, sure. He's young and has always hit well in the minors.
As far as why he’s league average, well, he’s been worth 1.5 wins in 77 games this season and his numbers in the minors suggest that it’s not a fluke.

He's a good player in a bad slump
I feel like we’d benefit more by just keeping him and hoping he rebounds than by trading him for slightly interesting AA pitcher or something
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
I especially don't want to trade him until he give him a shot at third
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
I'd rather just hit the undo button and pretend like it never happened
This year confirmed by fears about having Figgins in that I don’t understand how he is a MLB hitter. He probably rebounds but I’m just scared he could be a bit of a bust.
by Edgar for Pres on Jul 31, 2010 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions
I'd agree completely if we had a single other player interrnally to replace him
Determined, Jonesing Commentor
I don't think Mangini's good enough to replace him and Liddi and Triunfel aren't ready yet.
And I think the consensus around the M’s blogosphere is that Jose Lopez should be taken to the glue factory. So, I think taking a shot on Figgins bouncing back is still Seattle’s best shot.
