Gotta get Johnson back in there, since Felix was so awful the last time around with Bard. Personally, I can't believe Felix didn't start sobbing and collapse into a heap.

Did you know that Felix has not allowed a run to the White Sox since August 19, 2008? That’s a streak of 23.0 scoreless innings & counting.

Good things!

Karma police, arrest this man.

Batting orders not as important as people think, blah blah blah

But there just isn’t any excuse to keep hitting the worst regular hitter in baseball (by Fangraphs wOBA) in the cleanup spot.

I want to have faith in this team, but said faith is being challenged on a daily basis.

You pretty much have to play in a band box or be Barry Bonds to hit 50.

All those guys did it in hitters parks. Busch Stadium is no Safeco, but it’s a little bit of a pitcher’s park.

[Roger] Hanson said he is somewhat surprised by all of the passed balls and wild pitches that have gotten by Johnson. He’s still a huge supporter of the catcher, but says he has to start doing something about all the passed balls and wild pitches getting by him.

“He shouldn’t have that many passed balls,‘’ Hanson said. "There’s obviously a reason. Rob has much better hands as a catcher than that.’’

by The Typical Idiot Fan on Jul 26, 2010 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions

There have also been 2 liners that we made put outs on...

Each of the last two innings were ended by line drives. One to Kotchman and one to Lopez. No, they didn’t go for hits, but they were stung.

by zeeehjee on Jul 26, 2010 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions

But they had nothing to do with the scoring.

Two line drives vs. several ground balls finding holes. If those GBs end up being outs instead, the line drives are meaningless by themselves.

This is generally flawed thinking.

would you ever take a pitcher out who was throwing a no-hitter past the sixth inning?

by seattlebruin on Jul 26, 2010 5:55 PM PDT reply actions

I would, but also tell the pitcher that:

a) Don’t throw your best stuff if it hurts your arm. Hope for lucky defense.
b) I will take you out of the game immediately after the first hit and I would like you to do your best to rest your arm.

Well, if you ask a question that can be answered via BB-R or Fangraphs, that's what you'll get

generally, you need to do your own research, but if you want to know what say, the advantages of tRA vs xFIP are, posters will be more than happy to answer that to the best of their knowledge

by seattlebruin on Jul 26, 2010 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

You'll get that a lot of places.

A really easy to answer question is annoying. Like, “Do you think soandso strikes out a lot?”. You can find that answer yourself.

by The Typical Idiot Fan on Jul 26, 2010 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup.

It’s all fair enough. But for the kids who walk in here expecting frat boys as opposed to stat/snark wonks, the initial backlash can be startling and off-putting. But I think you guys do have, as previously mentioned, a natural selection process that makes for a more enjoyable environment for those who can survive it. It’s a little too competitive for me though. I’ll have to lift in the offseason to see if I can make the squad next year.
Back to lurking for now.

by Jesus Jones on Jul 26, 2010 6:58 PM PDT up reply actions

By the way, in case you are wondering about the response.

Felix wasn’t doing anything overtly angry. He didn’t huff, make faces, yell, or even take breaks to cool down. He was pitching poorly, yes, but sometimes he just pitches badly, and it’s not generally dependent on his state of mind. In general, we try not to make claims that can’t be supported. Milton Bradley, for example, often has temper flareups. Now, though, everything he does that seems like it might be just slightly related to anger is a “Milton Explosion” by reporters. But is it? Sometimes he’s expressing normal frustration, but fans, journalists, etc., like to give it names based on what they expect from his personality. This is what it appeared you did with Felix. He has a tendency to be emotional, so he starts pitching poorly and suddenly you claim he was losing his cool. But he really didn’t do anything to substantiate that claim, at least nothing overt. Ergo, we try not to make statements like that, and we especially do not like it when people say “it’s obvious” when if you really think about it, it wasn’t really obvious unless you are assuming he is prone to emotional issues. It’s not like he broke a bat over his knee and got into a shouting match with anyone.

...and now I'm here

by grips on Jul 26, 2010 6:42 PM PDT up reply actions

You have no insight into his emotional state and we don't like people making claims that they can't back up with facts.

by zeeehjee on Jul 26, 2010 7:01 PM PDT reply actions

This graph strikes me as a good way to draw the wrong conclusion.

The wrong conclusion is that power is essential to scoring.

Home runs did not count as base runners in the study, which strikes me a question begging because isolated power is likely to correlate negatively with baserunners, thus construed, but we’re counting the home run hitter as a run scored.

This year, there’s been no trying anything, even with a historically bad lineup.

Billy Martin and others were known to just draw the lineup out of a hat when it’s just in a slump
