7/25: Open Game Thread
Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners, Jul 25, 2010 1:10 PM PDT
After trying to sit through the Hall of Fame induction ceremony for about five minutes, I'm starting to hope none of our players ever get there.

So we still have too many goddamn first basemen
But hey, who cares about the rook’s development so long as we get Screwface some at-bats.
Is Lopez ever going to get traded?
Do we wait for him to have one good game? Is this just a pipe dream that all Mariners Fans share… but no other team subscribes to?
July 10th.
He had a grand slam against the Yankees.

It's hilarious as long as you don't think about the part where we are stuck with him at least for the rest of the season and won't possibly get something useful for him.
Ignore all of that and it’s hilarious.
Listen to it on the radio. It's kind of refreshing once in a while.
That way you can do stuff and enjoy baseball at the same time. Maybe you could do some drugs simultaneously or something.
Yes, that. Clean up. Not leadoff.
But hitting Lopez leadoff would be bad too.
It's always bad.
This is just one of the reasons it’s bad.
Jack Wilson has the 2nd highest BA of any player in the line-up today for the M's.
What're ya gonna do with those pies, boys?
Plus he's just pretty to look at either way.

I think Kotchman made the correct decision going for second base
The left fielder just made an outstanding play
I think it might be an acceptable try by others
but Kotchman all season has proven himself abnormally slow
ignacio
It is still the correct decision.
99 out of 100 times Kotchman hits a ball like that that hugs the line, he is going to be safe at second. It took an outstanding play by the LF to throw him out.
I guess it depends on whether an adjustment because so many runners have been thrown out.
Maybe you shouldn’t. Probably you shouldn’t.

This has ONE source at present.
Certainly seem sto me that they could've got a lot more than this.
He has what, three and a half years left on his contract?
I don’t see why they even needed to trade him now.
The more I think about it, the stupider it seems.
It’s impossible to believe that the D-Backs couldn’t have got a better package than that. A starter who blows, a reliever who blows, a 20-year-old pitching prospect in high A ball, and a PTBNL who will probably end up being someone inconsequential? Firing Josh Byrnes is starting to seem like a really bad idea.

If it's not Trout or that Asian catcher, Arizona has pretty much pulled a Bavasi.
by I Lick Squirrels on Jul 25, 2010 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions
Hank Conger is the Asian catcher, and he's pretty decent
Not in the realm of Trout, of course, but I’ll wait and see what the official word is. I don’t expect Trout to be included, though.
Trout's really the only thing that would make it a fair trade.
Conger would make it a slight win for the Angles. Anything else is bahahahahahahahaha

by houseofprime on Jul 25, 2010 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Well lets hope those MLB people who talked to Dave Cameron at the All-Star Game were right...
The main issue that was brought up is that he’s a guy whose best skill is command and has achieved most of his success in the National League. There’s a good amount of skepticism about NL arms without top-shelf stuff, and Haren was lumped into that category. Combine that with his escalating salaries (he’s due $40 million over the next three seasons), and I just couldn’t get anyone in the game to get very excited about giving up premium talent to acquire him.
I was pretty surprised, honestly. He started out in the 30s on my original list, but by the end of the weekend, he just missed the cut. The sense that I got in Anaheim was that guys like us like him more than major league teams do.
Let's compare:
Dan Haren: 2010: $8.25M, 2011: $12.75M, 2012: $12.75M, 2013: $15.5M club option ($3.5M buyout)
Joe Saunders: 2010: $3.7M (Arb1), 2011: Arb2 ($6 mil?), 2012: Arb3 ($8 mil?), 2013: Free Agent
This is Karmic payback for the Cliff Lee deal…
GET OUT MARK! GET OUT JUSTIN! GET OUT NOW LIKE JOSH BYRNES DID WHILE YOU STILL CAN!
This is so much worse than anything Bill Bavasi ever did.
You're dead to me.

Just logged on,
Saw the Angels acquired Dan Haren (I was pretty surprised) for supposedly a prospect package that isn’t great (this is correct right?) and a PTBNL (that is actually supposed to be good and not Trout). I know Dan Haren is no Cliff Lee, but the Angels are fighting. Also, we’re winning somehow (I guess since Matsuzaka sucks…)!

Things that could make this not one of the worst trades I have ever seen:
Trout or Morales as the PTBNL. I don’t see that being the case.
by Aaron Campeau on Jul 25, 2010 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions
Nick Piecoro just tweeted "Told the player to be named in the deal is a top prospect..."
Who ever Piecoro is.
The Angels don't have a PTBNL not named Trout who could make it anything but a trainwreck for Arizona
This is potentially 3 1/2 years of Dan Haren we’re talking about, if they exercise his option.
GOD
My Mariners blog SodoMojo, My Twitter Feed
by Griffin Cooper on Jul 25, 2010 4:14 PM PDT up reply actions
Well his 2013 option is for 15.5 mil, so it's not that big of a bargain
But still, 3 1/2 years of Dan Haren… dam it why can’t the Angels just go downhill already?!?
For a player of Haren's caliber 15.5mil is still pretty good
Depending on where they’re at competitively/financially they could easily pick that up.
The prospects look pretty comparable to what the Mariners gave up to get Lee
Plus Joe Saunders is in there for no apparent reason.
