Aww man.

2010: 37-60 (5.5 behind Orioles for Rendon(?))
2008: 38-59 (1.5 behind Nats/Padres for Strasburg)

Even if he were.

This team has a worse record than 2008 after 97 games AND we’re significantly farther away from the #1 draft pick. This draft race blows.

by ThundaPC on Jul 24, 2010 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not rooting for Rendon, per se, just a better draft pick.

Though Rendon is unquestionably better than any other 3B we have in system.

I honestly don't know what to do with that last spot.

Raben can’t hit lefties, Poythress can’t his enough, I’m still trying to get a read on Erasmo Ramirez and probably still imagine him as a #3 or #4, Cleto’s gotten worse as the season’s gone on, Lueke is a reliever, Pimentel hasn’t been up to snuff and Choi probably isn’t a first baseman to say nothing of the problems I have with picking AZL players in general.

They're splitting his time between there and first.

But as a prep he was a third baseman, I believe.

He hits really well, but the power is a wee bit inconsistent, which may be why they tried him behind the plate. It also helps because they signed Kim too and they might as well have a battery that speaks the same language for practical purposes.

Interesting... any player comps for him?

From what I’ve read, he seems to be a pretty advanced hitter for his age with decent power potential… But I haven’t seen much about him lately.

by lailaihei on Jul 24, 2010 8:37 PM PDT up reply actions

No, I loathe player comps and it's extremely difficult to make sense of the AZL in general.

Badler ranked him as the #5 international prospect to watch in the short-seasons though.

Yeah, I've seen plenty of players tear up the AZL and then do nothing for a while.

Liddi had a great AZL season and then did nothing for two years. Eddy Hernandez had a very fine season as a twenty-year-old and was pitching three years later before washing out entirely.

He’s also swung at a lot of pitches out of the zone.

On the other hand, in his 867 professional PA that have not been with the Mariners, he walked 133 times, or 15.3% of them. In the majors, he’s walked over 12% of the time.

On balance, I’m still pretty happy to say that he has the best plate discipline in the organization.

I think Ackley is a very close second.

It’s a matter of how you measure discipline, which is a pretty nebulous concept. K/BB, Ackley is going to win every time, but he’s more of a contact hitter and less of a power hitter: it’s a function of Ks. I’d bet on Smoak to have the higher BB% in two years though. Also, Ackley hasn’t managed a 12% BB against MLB pitchers yet.

Anyway, it’s these two and Figgins, and there’s no real question about it.

It seems to me kind of odd, when you have a person that played third pretty well to move him to second (where he looks uncomfortable) to shift a guy that played second (albeit not well) to third base where he never played. It seemed to me a case of weakening two positions, but hey, I’m not a major league manager.

If you want to prevent them from getting a full year, it's 10 days after the season starts (172 days counts as a year, with 182 days in the season)

But if you want to prevent them from being a Super Two, it varies. Once they get to two full years the top 17% of guys in that class (all players with between two and three years) with the most service time get arbitration. Usually it ends up being somewhere around 50 days in, so probably June.

Why did he lost all the power he had in UNC? He's a slap, ground ball hitter

now who still walks. His style isn’t anywhere close to Chase Utley. I am concern about his power.

by brian_sun on Jul 24, 2010 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions

He was never that much of a power hitter.

He only hit for power in his final season at UNC. If you look at him, he’s only 6’1, 185lbs, so while he probably will end up hitting for some power, I think of it as being more a product of his bat skills than being physically a beast.

Right, his eye is about as good as you can hope for.

For the season, his K/BB is 45/57, and he’s had more walks than strikeouts since sometime in May I think.

That's something that's usually better applied to free swingers.

He might hit better, because more pitches in the zone is always a good thing, but Ackley has such a good knowledge of the strikezone that it doesn’t really make a different. He’s just going to hit pitches that are in it and that’s that.

I guess more in a sense.

That he’ll likely get more pitches that are hittable because pitchers will be around the plate more often?

by Scruffy Lefty on Jul 24, 2010 10:24 PM PDT up reply actions

The same is true for a lot of hitters, but yeah.

Wouldn't this be cancelled out by more frequent and better breaking stuff?

I've heard this basic argument applied to free swingers more than anyone else, to be honest.

It was one of the ways Halman to Tacoma was rationalized. You give him a minor confidence boost and pitchers aren’t going to miss outside the zone as much. Win/win.

So far PCL pitchers haven't quite picked up on that.

His Ks have gone down slightly this year. We’re talking like 2.5%, but it’s something.

Don't get me wrong, if he can replicate what Figgins did

in 2009 as a major league 2B year after year, I’d be pretty happy. But I think the Mariners lineup need a power hitter more than a slap hitter. I guess we are not going to find it in 2B.

by brian_sun on Jul 24, 2010 10:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Nope.

For one, Chone Figgins is 5’8 and black.

If he qualifies as a second baseman

Over two years, top 40% doesn’t seem far-fetched.

by John Morgan on Jul 24, 2010 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions

ELIAS doesn't rate on WAR, either

and Lopez has a crap-ton of homers and a decent batting average.

by John Morgan on Jul 24, 2010 10:06 PM PDT up reply actions

2B, 3B, and SS appear to be grouped together.

And at the estimates at the break, Lopez misses by 3 players

Elvis Andrus B 62.1
Alex Gonzalez None 61.4
Jhonny Peralta None 60.3
Jose Lopez None 54.4

If it only scores over two years, this was the year to get out.

Next year he would have to have a hell of a bounce back once last year is taken out of the system.

I wouldn't offer arbitration if I sensed a weak market

but if Lopez makes a little noise over the next couple months, I could see some backwards franchise overvaluing him.

Not sure

MLBTR probaly has it, though

No, it's not.

It has its place, but 98% of what’s there is baseless speculation and it leads to a great deal of annoying conversation at other, better websites.

That's the point.

It’s called MLB Trade Rumors. It has rumors and speculation, that’s the point.

Rumors are a mugs game

Not that MLB Trade Rumors isn’t successful, but rumors are snake oil. Bad ideas for the gullible.

People who go to McDonalds go there and expect what they are getting and go there for that reason.

Same with MLBTR. If you don’t like the site, fine, but it’s there for people who like the rumors

I'm not sure if you can offer arbitration to a player whose option you've declined

but I think there’s a good chance his arbitration award would be higher than his option.

Good game guys

I commend you for hitting Lester a little bit.
But you did get a bit lucky with Patterson there!
