Interesting but useless fact:

Chone Figgins has gone 3-1 exactly 31 times. Yet he has only 8 ABs thanks to 23 walks. In those 8 at bats, he is 2 for 8.

His hands were up in the air because he was trying to dodge the ball.

I’m not really sure what to make of that play but because the fan interfered, everything turned out just like it should have if everything made sense, so okay.

There were totally two separate moves by the umpire.

One was to get out of the way, the other was to throw his hands up.

No, that's the complain about most of the hitters on the Mavericks roster.

Liddi only had six home runs a week ago. Now he has ten. This is good but at the same time raises questions about his ability to hit for power consistently, which was always the gripe about LaHair. Also, his defense has been unusually shoddy this season.

But I can get a Johjima jersey for 89. Which would you choose? (And no, this isn’t just a game of which is cheapest…if they were still selling Sexson ones for 5, I’d still pick one of the above. Although a Cirillo one would be good just for WTF value).

How’s that so far a stretch?

Joking aside, DMZ might have been the only one mentally unbalanced in anything. I remember him being very frustrated when he retired. I was a little sad that he retired in such a way, because if there’s one thing that the kind of people who made his life miserable wanted to accomplish, it was to get to him. I like Derek’s writing and I miss his humor. He provided a great balance to Dave’s more direct tone.

He kept it in check though.

When we were at the events, Baker would come up as a topic and Derek would shake his head and make some veiled references to the differences he’d had with Baker, but I don’t remember them being made explicit and aired on USSM. Someone can point me to it if they were.

Larry Larue posts

It’s a 1-1 tie headed into the seventh, but in the fifth inning there was a dugout scuffle that got rough enough to pull a jersey over the head of Jose Lopez. What happened? It’s not entirely clear, but it appeared the manager Don Wakamatsu approached second baseman Chone Figgins, who’d failed to cover second base on an outfield relay. According to photographers near the dugout, players and coaches imediately jumped in to separate the two. Figgins was replaced a moment later by Josh Wilson. Clearly, this isn’t over. There almost certainly will be some disciplinary action – and it would be nice if, for a change, the Seattle front office backed its manager instead of standing quietly on the sideline.

At least he wasn't swinging at crap.

That called strike was a hell of a pitch and 95% of MLB guys can’t locate a curve ball that well consistently.

Let's get another run.

These guys could use extra innings to hug it out.

Sure Blowers, tough error. Whatever you say

He wasn’t looking at the ball and completely missed it. It was his fault all the way.

So....

Figgins doesn’t go after the ball, Branyan calls him out, Lopez sticks up for his homeboy, Branyan gets in his face, Lopez makes a crack about cripples, FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT?

That’s my guess.

Wak will not pinch hit Josh.

Yes there are no more bench infielders, but Langerhans could try.

Wak was not involved.

His players are about to smack each other and he is not involved. Wak, you need to be involved. You need to control this, keep them apart, something, anything, that shows you have some control in the dugout.

Here we go.

Branyan with a hell of a charge to get to Figgins and Lopez gets in the way. Still no footage of what happened to start it.

by drblacknwhite on Jul 23, 2010 9:53 PM PDT reply actions

Jesus Christ

Lopez was the one going after Branyan. It looked like Figgins was backing off.

by BrianL on Jul 23, 2010 9:55 PM PDT reply actions

From the earlier footage Branyan was clearly going after Figgins and Lopez.

That was after Branyan’s charge, I think. Lopie was defending himself there.

by drblacknwhite on Jul 23, 2010 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I wonder if Drayer's account was a little Lopez positive.

She made it sound like he was the one intervening, which sort of emphasizes the ongoing point of him being a bit dumb but ultimately well-meaning.

The short footage makes it look like Figgy and Branyan were having words

Something happened and Branyan got pissed and had to be held back by like half the team. Lopez kind of getting in the middle to intervene, and it looked like Vargas was trying to cool down Figgy.

I don't understand the whole chanin of events.

Figgins and Wak I understand. The involvement of Branyan and Lopez is mysterious.

Blowers takes the ballplayers' viewpoint

“I’ve seen it in the tunnel, I’ve seen it in the clubhouse, it’s going to happen. I guarantee you that it has happened somewhere already this season, between two players, between manager and player, we just happened to see it on camera.”

to see Branyan square up with the Toad. Branyan would knock his fat ass all over the place. Ding DIng Schools in Bitch!

by hawks02 on Jul 23, 2010 10:11 PM PDT reply actions

Just showed it again

Seemed to me like Figgins was arguing with Wak about something and Branyan snapped. In the slomo, Branyan is climbing over someone, apparently for Figgins, Wak is walking away while Figgins is being pulled away from Branyan and at the same time kinda yelling at Wak, and Lopez is between Figgins and Branyan and looks to be crapping his pants. Wak looks like he’s almost out of the area and then looks back to see Branyan going after someone.

My guess: Wak pissed off Figgins somehow, and Figgins reaction set off Branyan. And I have to think the stress in the dugout was there because of the Lopez situation.

It’s interesting that no one is talking about Branyan at all when he looks to be the guy who caused the team-wide rumble.

by surfmonkey89 on Jul 23, 2010 10:22 PM PDT reply actions

Figgins came into the dugout knowing he messed up

Wak justifiably angered by the lack of hustle by Figgins tells Figgins to have a seat.
Figgins, shocked that he’d been called out for his non-effort takes a step towards the water cooler. Branyan, who has been courting the water cooler for several weeks, tells Figgins to step away from the water cooler because that is HIS girlfriend. Then, Lopez, thinking HE is Branyan’s girl goes after Branyan with his batting glove. Next thing you know, the entire dugout is doing a Scottish jig and Josh Wilson hits a double.

Interesting

I’d forgotten about Figgins “voicing his displeasure” about being dropped in the order.

I don’t disagree with moving him in the order, but you take these two incidents together and you could arrive at the conclusion that for whatever reason Wak is much harder on Figgins than Lopez. Lopez has sucked all year and nothing’s been done, yet Figgins is the only one being reprimanded.

by surfmonkey89 on Jul 23, 2010 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Drayer is just reading a quote she (coincidently) got from Figgins about Lopez earlier today

where he talks about Lopez “coming to play every day” which is Figgins’ highest compliment.

by msb on Jul 23, 2010 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, and btw

if everyone (Griffey included) is pissed about how Wak handled the Jr situation, well, too bad. It seems to me like a lot of the players think Jr should have been left alone to suck all year, which boggles the mind. I’m actually with Wak/Z on that one.

by Jeff Nye on Jul 23, 2010 11:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I think there might be some basis or I wouldn't have posted it.

Injured wife, plead not guilty, protection order issued, denied visitation, I think there is some basis for my comment. I just hope the Mariner’s continue to go with and support Felix as the ambassador for their “Refuse to Abuse” campaign. Russell just doesn’t seem like the best “leader” for this effort or any leadership effort the Mariner’s should want to pursue.

I’m standing by my post. I don’t believe for a second that he doesn’t know his own strength. We all know the hurt we could put on our girlfriends/wives/partners. His teammates knew the hurt he could put on whoever might have been the recipient of his anger today. He’s not getting any points from me. Sorry Russell, you need to get control over yourself. Check with MB for some pointers.

He has a $5 million mutual option next year.

If we have a role for him and his back’s ok, I’d be fine with exercising it.

by drblacknwhite on Jul 23, 2010 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Because there isn't any reason to give him a 200% plus raise.

Let him hit free agency, and if he’s willing to resign again at 2m, maybe he’s an option if he’s needed.

Cot’s thinks the Indians are on the hook for his buyout, anyway.

by Jeff Nye on Jul 23, 2010 11:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Whoa. That would be interesting.

Can you do that? I didn’t think you could add a clause to a trade that could only take effect if the Mariners decide to buyout the option. In other words, something after the trade has already been completed. Aside from PTBNL, that is, which is weird to begin with. Unless it has already been decided and agreed upon at the time of the trade. Which would mean there’s no way in hell Branyan’s option is picked up.

Fans are typically idiots.

To better understand the play...

Wasn’t Figgins’ first responsibility on that play to cover second base to take a throw from the cutoff man? You can see Jack Wilson skying up to try to get the ball…so clearly he, too ,expected the ball to be cut. So by the time the ball goes over his head there’s basically no chance for Figgins to get over from covering the base to get the ball.

I admit that player positioning on balls in play is not my long suit…so I’d be interested to hear where Figgins should have been on that one.

by short on Jul 23, 2010 11:19 PM PDT reply actions

um.

The play at 2nd happens.
Wak sees something that (unlike baserunning, which could be interpreted as “aggressive”) is a non-play that can be seen as not trying.
He finally hits the breaking point and says something to Figgins.
Figgins (who has previously misinterpreted Wak when he thought that being moved to 9th was an indictment of his preparedness) is pissed because he is “always ready to play”
He steps towards his manager as they argue.
Lopez steps between them.
Much pulling and surging occurs.
Branyan goes along the bench trying to get to the other side of the pile. (he had a long explanation that I had a hard time hearing— hopefully quoted by someone later)
Alonzo Powell pulls Lopez’ jersey over his head as they move the scrum back and forth

by msb on Jul 23, 2010 11:23 PM PDT reply actions

Does that seem right?

Apparently Josh Wilson said he missed a lot of what was happening as he was warming up, having been told he’d be going in the game, so the decision to bench Figgins happened before the inning ended.
